Today marks my last day of work as a CIR.
本日をもって退任となり、約１年半の国際交流員の業務を無事にまっとうすることができました。

Thank you for making my whole family feel so very welcome here in Date City. You brightened our world!
私を含め家族全員を心から歓迎してくださり、本当にありがとうございました。伊達市ならではの皆の温かさで私たちの世界が明るくなりました！

I will forever treasure this time working at my sons’ schools as well as Tsukidate Academy and getting to know so many sweet Date City kids.
息子たちの通う学校や、月舘学園などに国際交流員として訪問し、たくさんのかわいい伊達市の子どもたちと出会えたこの時間を一生の宝物として心に刻みます。

Even though I may be stepping away from CIR work, I hope to see you around town. Take care, Date City.
国際交流員の仕事から離れていても、町で皆さんとお会いできることを楽しみにしています。 伊達市の皆さん！どうぞお元気で！

お餅つき交流イベント・Mochi Pounding Exchange Event

Date City Hall and Date International Association worked together to offer a Mochi Making Exchange Event in February complete with the traditional mallet and mortar. We had foreign residents from China, Sri Lanka, Philippines, Serbia, USA, England and other countries as well as the local Japanese community come out and join!
伊達国際交流協会が主催し、2月に伝統的な杵と臼を使用した餅つき交流イベントを開催しました。当日は、中国、スリランカ、フィリピン、セルビア、アメリカ、イギリスなど多くの国からの外国人市民、そして地元の日本人コミュニティの皆さんとたくさんの方が集まりました！

First timers or not, we all enjoyed the experience of pounding the mochi. Once it was ready, we enjoyed it in tonjiru (pork and miso) soup, as well as kinako (soy bean powder) and red bean plated varieties. It was so yummy! We ate until our stomachs felt like they would burst and were so sleepy by the end! Any event with food, always speaks to me.
初めての方もそうでない方も、みんなで餅をつく体験を楽しみました。餅ができあがると、お雑煮やきな粉餅、あんこ餅にしていただきました。本当に美味しかったです！お腹がはちきれそうなほど食べて、終わる頃にはとても眠くなりました。食べ物があるイベントはいつも心に響きますね。

One thing that really touched me was that the Date City mayor, Hiroyuki Suda, joined for upwards of two hours. I see him at every single event I attend; so, there is no doubt in my mind that he is incredibly busy. Lately, if I put on the news or SNS, I’m often met with Japan wants to double down on immigration or comments including, “Please go back to your country. Please”. And, occasionally, I receive dirty looks just for existing. And while this is uncomfortable for me, I am also aware that it’s less than what my non-White friends are sure to experience. The mayor attending this event was the reminder I needed that not everyone feels like that. I truly appreciated his gesture of being there.
本当に感動したことの一つは、伊達市の須田博行市長がとても長い時間イベントに参加してくださったことです。私が出席するほとんどのイベントで市長の姿を見るので、非常に忙しいことは間違いありません。最近、ニュースやSNSを見ていると「外国人対策の厳格化」とか、「自分の国に帰ってください。お願いします。」などの心無いコメントを目にすることがあります。そして、時々、ただ存在しているだけで冷たい視線を受けることもあります。これは私にとって気持ちの良いことではないことですが、それが私の非白人の友人たちが経験していることに比べれば少ないものだということも理解しています。
ただ、市長が今回の国際交流イベントに参加し、参加している外国人の方々ともコミュニケーションを取っている姿を見ることで、みんながそういうふうに考えているわけでもないことを思い出させてくれました。市長がそこにいてくれたことに心から感謝しています。

It sure was fun hosting another Christmas event this year. Elementary school kids came with their caregivers and we all made homemade peppermint bark. I was excited to introduce our participants to American ingredients like candy cane crumbs and peppermint extract that are hard to purchase here. I had my brother send them special for us.

今年もクリスマスイベントを開催し、とても楽しかったです。小学生の子どもたちが保護者と一緒に参加し、みんな手作りのペパーミントバークを作りました。材料はこちらでは手に入れにくいキャンディケーンの砕いたものやペパーミントエキスなどを使用しました。アメリカの材料を使う良い機会になって、とても嬉しかったです。これらの材料は、特別に弟に送ってもらいました。

We needed the peppermint bark to harden in the fridge; so, in the meantime the kids worked on coloring pages and we played Christmas themed bingo. The parents and kids alike enjoyed hearing and trying to decipher the English pronunciation of different Christmas words.

ペパーミントバークを冷蔵庫で固める必要があったので、その間にクリスマスに関連するアクティビティを行いました！初めはぬり絵をしたり、クリスマスをテーマにしたビンゴを楽しみました。ビンゴの際は、英語でのクリスマス関連の言葉の発音を聞いて、ネイティブな発音から単語を理解しようと頑張り、楽しんでいました。

Then, I read the kids a story in both English and Japanese called, “Santa’s First Christmas”. I was worried since reading in both languages took a little more time, but they all seemed to enjoy it and were commenting here and there. So cute!

その後、子どもたちに「サンタさんのはじめてのクリスマス」というお話を英語と日本語の両方で読み聞かせました。両言語で読むのは少し時間がかかるので心配していましたが、みんな楽しんでくれているようでした。お話の途中では、ところどころでコメントもしてくれました。とてもかわいかったです！

We sang a simple version of We Wish You a Merry Christmas and I loved seeing some familiar faces truly singing their hearts out. We then went back in to break our chocolate to make it look like bark and package it up to take home.

その後、簡単なバージョンの「ウィー　ウィッシュ　ユー　ア　メリー　クリスマス」をみんなで歌いました。懐かしい顔ぶれが心を込めて歌っている姿を見るのがとても嬉しかったです。その後、完成したペパーミントバークを木の樹皮のように見えるように割って、家に持ち帰れるように包装しました。

There were different stations with games, a Christmas playlist to set the mood and it had just snowed. It was the perfect day for it! Everyone seemed to really enjoy themselves. I’m so thankful.

いくつかの遊びが楽しめるテーブルがあり、クリスマスの雰囲気を盛り上げるプレイリストも流れていて、ちょうど雪が降ったばかりでした。まさに「クリスマスイベント」にふさわしい完璧な日でした！皆さん本当に楽しんでくれていたようで、とても感謝しています。

Trivia Night・トリビアナイト

There have been four trivia nights since I became a CIR. Have you tried it? This is by far my favorite event that I do for Date City as it is a true international exchange experience. This most recent time there were participants from seven different countries: Japan, USA, Canada, U.K., Holland, South Africa and New Zealand. It was so enjoyable as always.

CIR（国際交流員）として活動を始めてから、これまでに4回のトリビアナイトが開催されました。みなさんは、参加したことはありますか？トリビアナイトは私が伊達市で行うイベントの中で一番お気に入りの活動です。なぜなら、真の国際交流を体験できるイベントだからです。今回の11月に行われたトリビアナイトには、日本、アメリカ、カナダ、イギリス、オランダ、南アフリカ、ニュージーランドの7カ国から参加者が集まりました。いつも通り、とても楽しい時間を過ごすことができました。

I've explained this before, but trivia nights abroad are typically held in bars. Lara (my predecessor) originally pitched this trivia night idea and I am forever thankful. It is a great multi-generational (this time was ages 6 to 60+) event and the breakdown of Japanese versus non-Japanese participants is beautifully diverse

以前の活動日記で説明したことがあるのだが、海外ではトリビアナイトは通常バーで開催されることが多いです。
このイベントのアイデアを最初に提案したのは、私の前任者であるララさんでした。彼女にはいまでも感謝しています。このイベントは多世代間交流の場でもあり、今回の参加者の年齢層は6歳から60歳以上までと非常に幅広いものとなりました。また、日本人と外国人の参加者の割合はだいたい半分ずつであり、多様性に溢れた構成となっています。

The game has 40 questions total taking place over four rounds. There are two categories per round; for example, Space and Animation. I also enjoy getting creative with the team names. This time was positive Japanese slang and their translated equivalents like God Level 2.0 or There IS a Chance.

ゲームは合計40問の問題から成り、それを4ラウンドで行います。各ラウンドには2つのカテゴリーがあり、例えば「宇宙」と「アニメーション」などです。また、チーム名を創造的に工夫するのも楽しみのひとつです。今回のチーム名には、ポジティブな日本語の流行り言葉とその英訳を取り入れました。例えば、「神っている2.0」や「ワンチャンスギ」といった名前でした。

The winning team went home with Date City made products such as cookies, drip coffee, muscat grape cider and apples. Lucky them! Hope to see more new faces join us at the next trivia night in February. See you then!

優勝チームには、伊達市で作られた製品を用意しました。例えばクッキー、ドリップコーヒー、シャインマスカットのサイダー、そしてリンゴなどの伊達市の特産品です。ラッキーですね！次回のトリビアナイトは2月に開催されますので、もっと新しい顔ぶれにもお会いできることを楽しみにしています。

Fall Cycling Along the Hirose River: Kitemi~na’s 40 km Bicycle Event
秋の広瀬川サイクリング：きてみ～なの40km自転車イベント

At the location of what was formerly Ote Elementary School is now Kitemi~na, a bicycle lover’s paradise. They renovated the school building and now you can find lodging facilities on the 3rd floor (complete with bicycle racks in all of the rooms), a rental space that keeps the school vibe on the second floor and a café on the first floor. They offer monthly bicycle riding events typically from 12-20 kilometers. You can even rent a bicycle from them! Needless to say, I’ve been wanting to go check out Kitemi~na for a while.
現在、旧小手小学校があった場所にサイクリング愛好者の楽園「きてみ～な」があります。学校の建物の中身を新しくして、3階には自転車ラックが各部屋に完備された宿泊施設、2階には学校の雰囲気を残したレンタルスペース、1階にはカフェがあります。毎月、12～20kmの自転車イベントを開催しており、自転車のレンタルも可能です！ずっと行ってみたかった場所です。

This month was special as it was their 2nd anniversary event. I signed up despite the fact that it was not their typical 12-20 kilometer offering, but 40 kilometers! To be honest, I’m not in the best shape and I worried if I could pull it off or not. My son casually said the evening before, “Mom, you could die!”. I had the same feeling.
今月は特別なイベントで、2周年記念のイベントでした。普段の12～20kmのイベントではなく、40kmのコースということで、思わず参加申し込みをしました！正直言って、運動神経はそんなになく、完走できるかどうか不安でした。前日の晩に息子がふと「お母さん、死ぬかもしれないよ！」と言っていて、私も同じことを考えていました。

The day of was cool and cloudy. There were some familiar faces from city hall working the event as support staff as well as my older son’s homeroom teacher also riding a bicycle. The mayor and Date City’s super hero Pine Prosper also made an appearance! I felt less alone.
当日は涼しい曇り空でした。イベントのサポートスタッフとして働いていた市役所の方々の温かさを感じたり、息子の担任の先生も自転車に乗って参加していたりして、少し安心できました。市長さんや伊達市のスーパーヒーローのパインプロスパーも顔を出していました！

The route was a round trip ride from Tsukidate to Yanagawa and back. The 20 km to Yanagawa were all downhill or flat and felt fast! When we arrived at the halfway point at Yanagawa Kibo no Mori Park, we were rewarded with delicious vanilla soft serve with strawberry jam from Matsubaen Strawberry Smile. It was heaven and just what we needed to attempt the ride back to Tsukidate.
コースは月舘から梁川までの往復40km。梁川までは下り坂か平坦な道ばかりで、とても速く感じました！梁川希望の森公園の折り返し地点では、松葉園のストロベリースマイルの苺ジャムが乗ったバニラソフトクリームがご褒美として待っていました。まさに天国のようでした。

The way back was all uphill and the wind started to pick up. I wish the wind was pushing us along, but that was not the case. I wasn’t familiar with the roads and couldn’t gauge how many kilometers were left which started to feel mental. It was then that I was so glad we had been placed in groups. The college boys behind me announced we only had 5 kilometers to go and continued to count down as we got closer. My son’s teacher was cheering me on and encouraging me to get to the finish so I can brag to my kids. If they hadn’t been there, I most likely would have thrown in the towel. I made it! First time ever to ride 40 kilometers on a bicycle.
帰りはすべて登り坂で、風も強くなってきました。風が追い風であれば良かったのですが、そうではありませんでした。行ったことない道が多く、残りの距離感がつかめず、精神的に辛くなりました。でも、一緒のグループの大学生の男の子たちが「あと5kmだよ！」と声をかけて、距離をカウントダウンしてくれたおかげで、頑張れました。息子の先生も私を応援して、「子どもたちに自慢できるようにゴールしよう！」と言ってくれて、もし彼らがいなかったら、おそらく途中で諦めていたでしょう。最終的になんとか完走できました！初めて40kmを自転車で走りきりました。

Three hours after we took off that morning, we arrived back at Kitemi~na, and enjoyed a delicious hearty lunch of tonjiru (pork and vegetable miso soup), fried chicken using local birds, a giant salty rice ball and a shine muscat grape cream puff prepared by their café. It was the best reward.
出発から3時間後、きてみ～なに帰着し、カフェで準備された豚汁、地元の鳥を使った唐揚げ、大きな塩むすび、そしてシャインマスカットのシュークリームをいただきました。最高のご褒美でした。

Ryozen Taiko Matsuri
霊山太鼓祭り

Date had another vibrant festival this month, the Ryozen Taiko Matsuri. This year was my first time as last year it was unfortunately cancelled due to weather related issues.

伊達市では先月のサマーフェスティバルに続いて、今月も活気あふれるお祭り「霊山太鼓まつり」が開催されました。昨年は残念ながら天候の影響で中止になってしまったので、今年が初めての参加でした！

This festival is held annually at Hobara Recreational Park. I took my younger son and it was the most beautiful sunny day. A field there, typically used for sports practice, is filled with food stalls, booths and there are many stage performances to enjoy.

このお祭りは毎年、保原総合公園で１日行われます。私は次男を連れて行きましたが、当日は雲ひとつない晴天に恵まれました。普段はスポーツの練習に使われる広場が、たくさんの屋台やブース、ステージパフォーマンスで賑わっていました。

We’re always excited about shaved ice and my son was happy to get a bow and arrow balloon made by girl group, Magical Barurun Yes.

私はいつもお祭りに行くとかき氷を毎回楽しみにしていて、今回ももちろん食べました。そして息子は、アイドルグループ「マジカルバルルーンYes」のメンバーに、風船の弓矢を作ってもらって大喜びでした。

There was a performance by the talented singer/ songwriter, MANAMI. Her voice was so pretty!

シンガーソングライターのMANAMIさんのパフォーマンスもありました。彼女の歌声はとてもきれいでした！

And when the afternoon taiko performance finally began, we saw Alice Kobayashi on stage, (she represented Fukushima and received an honorable mention at the Miss Japan Pageant)!

そして午後の太鼓パフォーマンスが始まると、ステージにはなんとミスジャパンの特別賞を貰った、福島代表でもあるパーソナリティーの小林アリスさんが登場。

I enjoyed browsing the booths representing Date City’s sister cities, located in Matsumae, Hokkaido; Kusatsu City, Shiga; Minami Makimura, Nagano; Shiroi City, Chiba and Chikusei, Ibaraki. and . They had their produce and original products for sale.

また、伊達市の姉妹都市・友好交流都市（北海道松前町、滋賀県草津市、長野県南牧村、千葉県白井市、茨城県筑西市）のブースもあり、それぞれの特産品やオリジナル商品が販売されていて、見ているだけでも楽しかったです。

Ryozen Taiko Matsuri is without a doubt, a big deal here in Date City. Definitely check it out next year if you’re close by.

「霊山太鼓まつり」は、伊達市にとって本当に大きなイベントです。お近くの方は、ぜひ来年足を運んでみてください！
