What stories are hidden in old letters, photographs, and field notebooks? And what can they tell us about the women who helped shape archaeology and heritage work across the Levant and beyond? 🔍✨

In Episode 11 of Learning from the Levant, Shatha Mubaideen is joined by Eman Shahin and Alice Lubbock to discuss the BIRI project Women Transcending Boundaries. Drawing on the archives of the British International Research Institutes (BIRI), the project uncovers the interconnected lives of women whose contributions to archaeology and heritage have often been overlooked.

Through personal writings, correspondence, photographs, and field notes, the conversation reveals a rich history of collaboration, knowledge exchange, and resilience that crossed borders and generations.

On 16th May, the Council for British Research in the Levant (CBRL) – Amman participated in “Amman – Heritage and People Dialogue”, an interactive heritage walk through Downtown Amman, organised in partnership with the Jordan Engineers Association, the Greater Amman Municipality, and partners working in the field of cultural heritage.

The event brought together architects, academics, students, and heritage enthusiasts to explore the historic urban landscape of Downtown Amman, including Raghdan Square, the Al-Husseini Mosque area, King Talal Street, and a range of traditional markets and heritage sites.

The tour highlighted the importance of preserving Amman’s architectural and cultural heritage through interactive storytelling, community engagement, and creative youth initiatives. CBRL’s Events and Communications Officer, Bara’ah Alshorman, worked closely with partners to organise the event and guided participants through the creative process of producing short reel videos documenting the interactive trail.

The event closed with a ceremony at Al Hussein Cultural Centre, attended by HRH Princess Dana Firas, Vice President of ICOMOS International and President of ICOMOS Jordan, during which participants presented short video reels showcasing the beauty of Amman, the richness of its heritage, and the vibrancy of its community. Firas Bqa’in, Director of Operations at the CBRL Amman Institute, represented CBRL at the closing ceremony.

CBRL is proud to support this initiative, celebrating the city’s living heritage and collective memory.
