CBRL Amman Institute is pleased to welcome Prof. Andrew Garrard for a lecture exploring two interconnected chapters of archaeological research in Jordan.

The lecture will offer a glimpse into the British Institute at Amman during the 1980s, when Prof. Garrard served as Assistant Director and Director, before turning to the Azraq Basin Early Prehistory Project, a major field project investigating the environmental and settlement history of eastern Jordan from the Late Upper Palaeolithic through the Epipalaeolithic and Neolithic.

[ CBRL–PEF UK Book Launch ]
Peasant Agriculture in the Jerusalem Hills

CBRL and the Palestine Exploration Fund (PEF) are pleased to invite you to the launch of Peasant Agriculture in the Jerusalem Hills, by Lucjan Turkowski, edited by Carol Palmer.

Drawing on Turkowski’s research during the final years of the British Mandate, the book offers a detailed account of Palestinian fellahin and rural life in the Jerusalem hills, exploring agricultural practices, animal management, craft production, local knowledge and material culture.

Professor Dina Matar will chair the panel discussion, with panellists Dr Mazen Iwaisi, Dr Muna Dajani and Leila Sansour.

[ Opportunity: PhD Scholarship ]

The University of Copenhagen is inviting applications for a three-year PhD scholarship within the 'Networks Before Agriculture: Social Interaction in Epipalaeolithic and Neolithic Jordan' project, led by Professor Tobias Richter.

The PhD research will focus on the geological sourcing of inorganic raw materials, using archaeological materials from Qa’ Shubayqa in eastern Jordan to investigate prehistoric social and material networks during the transition from foraging to farming.

📅 Application deadline: 15 September 2026
📍 Start date: January 2027

The position is particularly suited to candidates with a background in archaeology, geoarchaeology or geology and an interest in developing expertise in geoarchaeological methods.
