Bureau of Gender Affairs Jamaica

Bureau of Gender Affairs Jamaica The Bureau of Women's Affairs has been re-named Bureau of Gender Affairs via Cabinet Decision No. 8/16 which was approved on March 21, 2016.

The Bureau of Gender Affairs, division within the Ministry of Culture, Gender, Entertainment and Sports affirms the government’s decision to develop human capital through gender mainstreaming towards achieving gender equality, equity and social justice. The Bureau of Gender Affairs, a division within the Ministry of Culture, Gender, Entertainment and Sports (MCGES), is the national machinery respo

nsible for empowering the men and women of Jamaica. This is consistent with Cabinet Decision No. 11/11 and the approval of the National Policy for Gender Equality (NPGE) in 2011. The BGA focuses at the policy level in order to ensure that gender analysis is integrated into all national policies, plans, programmes and projects. This is necessary because development initiatives have a differential impact on women and men.

A proud moment for Jamaica. 🇯🇲

Jamaica has secured a seat on the Executive Committee of the Inter-American Commission of Women (CIM) for the 2026–2029 term, reinforcing the country’s commitment to advancing gender equality and the empowerment of women across the region.

Representing Jamaica as Principal Delegate is Mrs. Sharon Coburn Robinson, Principal Director, Bureau of Gender Affairs, Ministry of Culture, Gender, Entertainment and Sport, whose election reflects both Jamaica’s leadership and continued advocacy for the rights and advancement of women and girls.

The election took place during the CIM meeting held in Washington, D.C., on May 28–29, 2026.

Congratulations to Mrs. Robinson and Jamaica on this significant achievement as we continue to strengthen our voice and influence on the regional stage.

🇯🇲 Jamaica Honours a Pioneer at the Hemispheric Stage

Jamaica’s Ministry of Culture, Gender, Entertainment and Sport has commissioned a portrait of the late Princess May Lawes — and it is now where it belongs: at the Organization of American States in Washington, D.C.

Minister Hon. Olivia Grange collected the portrait at the Ministry’s Kingston headquarters before its presentation to the OAS, calling it “a powerful tribute to a woman whose contributions helped advance the cause of gender equality and women’s leadership.”

Minister Grange highlighted the remarkable breadth of Princess Lawes’ service: Member of Parliament, Parliamentary Secretary, Chair of the Women’s Centre of Jamaica Foundation — and the first Caribbean President of the Inter-American Commission of Women.

At the formal presentation ceremony at OAS Headquarters on May 29, 2026, Jamaica’s Ambassador/Permanent Representative to the OAS captured the moment beautifully:

“Princess Lawes belonged to Jamaica, but her legacy belongs to the Americas.”

The portrait, masterfully crafted by artist Greg Bailey, now hangs in the Hall of Heroes and Heroines at OAS Headquarters — ensuring that generations to come will encounter the image of a woman who shattered barriers, led with conviction, and transformed women’s leadership across the Hemisphere.

Her legacy lives on. 🌺

Strong minds are built together.

Parents, teachers, caregivers, communities—we all have a role. Supporting a child’s mental health is not a one-person job.
