Mission Statement

The Ministry of Health & Wellness (MOHW) is the pre-eminent Government organization whose mandate is "To ensure the provision of quality health services and to promote healthy lifestyles and environmental practices". The Ministry, together with its Regional Health Authorities (RHAs), Agencies and related organizations make up the public health system and are responsible for hea

lth care delivery across the island. It is one which envisages a health system that is client-centred and guarantees access to quality health care for every person in our population, at reasonable costs, and which takes into account the needs of the vulnerable among us. It is one which seeks to provide information and to educate the populace, to facilitate individuals taking responsibility for their own health, making informed decisions and adopting healthy lifestyle habits. All this, within a clean, healthy environment where families and communities actively participate and are integrated into the system of health.

Dr. Adrienne Williams has been awarded J$4.9 million through the Ministry of Health & Wellness’ Research for Wellness Fund to support research into the effects of air pollution on respiratory health in an urban Jamaican city.

Her project, titled Assessing Air Pollution Exposure and its Effects on Respiratory Health in an Urban Jamaican City: A Prospective Panel Study, will generate local evidence on the relationship between air pollution exposure and respiratory health.

Dr. Michelle Reece-Mills has been awarded J$20 million through the Ministry of Health & Wellness’ Research for Wellness Fund to support research into the psychological impact of childhood cancer on parents and siblings in Jamaica.

Her project, titled Hidden Patients in Crisis: The Psychological Impact of Childhood Cancer on Parents and Siblings in Jamaica, will examine the experiences and psychological impact of childhood cancer on family members.

Strengthening institutional capacity for advanced cardiac care. 💙

Swipe through for highlights from our official handover ceremony with the I Have A Heart Foundation I HAVE A HEART FOUNDATION , marking a significant enhancement to our Cardiothoracic Unit.

This contribution introduces specialized surgical instrumentation, specifically the Ultravision CT Mitral Valve Exposure System and a Cardiac Knot Pusher Set designed to optimize precision and expand our capacity for minimally invasive open-heart procedures. 

We extend our sincere appreciation to the I Have A Heart Foundation for their steadfast partnership and strategic investment in specialized healthcare delivery at the University Hospital of the West Indies.

Dr. Simone Badal has been awarded J$20 million through the Ministry of Health & Wellness’ Research for Wellness Fund to support research into breast cancer among Jamaican women.

Her project, titled From Cell Lines to Clinical Cohort: Characterising Breast Cancer in Jamaican Women to Inform Treatment, Policy and International Research, aims to generate findings that can inform treatment, policy and future research.
