Jamaica College today launched the STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, the Arts and Mathematics) Infusion Project, representing a paradigm shift in how technology is integrated into the teaching curriculum here at JC. The STEAM Project, the STEAM curriculum and the STEAM labs are the result of the tremendous generosity of Old Boy Dr Joseph Tait who made the entire project possible.

Under the STEAM Infusion Project, our teachers will work in cross-curricular STEAM settings in order for our students to make connections between concepts and problem solving in new and exciting ways. This will lead to active engagement, many discoveries and numerous enthusiastic “aha” moments.

My fellow JC old boys. Let me start by first wishing that you, your family and your loved ones are all safe during this most unusual time. We have all been affected by this Covid 19 pandemic and our beloved Jamaica College is no different. Right now we are under extreme pressure to keep the operational functions at 189 Old Hope Road going in a meaningful way, as almost all of our supplemental revenue streams have ground to a halt. In order to utilize current online classroom technology to keep the learning going, we now have to invest in our teaching technology solutions such as hardware (tablets and laptops), software and WiFi data access, while continuing to pay utilities and ground maintenance. With no rental income from our auditorium, sporting or classroom facilities, no lunch sales from our cafeteria and minimum collection of outstanding fees from our parents, we have had to cut staff, cut pay or cut hours. One extremely important group that has been hardest hit is our supplemental teachers and administrators who are paid directly by us and not by the Ministry. These persons are critical in our drive to continue to elevate Jamaica College’s academic standards. We are therefore turning to you, our True Blue Old Boys for help. The combined Chapters of the JCOBA, here in Jamaica, New York, Florida and Canada have joined forces to meet this crisis head on and have created the JCOBA Big Brother Covid19 Rescue Plan. The goal is for each chapter to generate a minimum of $J300,000 ($2000 USD) per month for the next 3 months, beginning the end of May, to offset this critical financial shortfall No amount is too small. No amount is too great. I urge you to support this very important cause, by making your contribution via any one of the channels below, and thank you in advance for your continued support of our great Jamaica College.

By now, I am sure that you have all heard the news that following the confirmation of two cases of Covid19 here in Jamaica, the organizers of Boys and Girls Champs have taken the extraordinary measure of cancelling this year's championships. Immediately following that announcement, we were later told by the Prime Minister that all public gatherings have been banned for a period up to April 3. Over the coming week, I am sure that the situation will continue to unfold and evolve even more rapidly as we struggle to contain this virus.

In light of yesterdays series of events, the JCOBA Exec met late last night to discuss the situation. It is with a heavy heart this morning that regrettably, we have taken the decision to cancel this year's True Blue Reunion Weekend. I am sure that like me, you were looking forward to this year's Reunion (which promised to be the biggest ever), as well as our book launch and the unveiling of our Wall of Honor at the College. But given the threat to public health and safety that the pandemic posed, it was always doubtful that we could have proceeded. Yesterday's decision from ISSA and the Govt only served to confirm that our concerns were founded.

We looked at options including postponing or scaling down the event, but given the unpredictable nature of the threat, ultimately we believe that we made the right decision to cancel.

All of this has unfolded remarkably quickly, and JC Old Boys—not surprisingly—are disappointed that we will miss out on this amazing reunion experience. But one of my guiding principles in life is that there is opportunity in every crisis and so this cancellation may very well afford us the opportunity, time and space to be even more creative in reimagining the event for when it is next held. I know that I can count on your help for ideas and suggestions.

This is a moment of challenge for us all, but in true Jamaica College fashion, we will keep work burning in the field at 189 Old Hope Road, so that we can surmount this temporary setback as quickly as possible.

Thank you again for your continued support to our beloved College.
