The Minister of Culture, Gender, Entertainment and Sport, the Honourable Olivia Grange, says a Celebration of Life for the late Jamaican singer Ernie Smith will be held next week Friday, June 5, 2026.

Minister Grange describes the event as “an evening of music, memories and celebration”.

It will take place at Ranny Williams Entertainment Centre beginning at 6pm.

Ernie Smith, an icon of Reggae music, passed away last month in the United States after a period of illness.

Minister Grange says the Celebration of Life next week will “highlight and honour Ernie Smith’s contribution to Jamaican music”.

Among his most memorable recordings are ‘Life is Just For Living’, ‘Duppy Gunman’, ‘Pitta Patta’, and ‘I For Jesus’.

The Minister of Culture, Gender, Entertainment and Sport, the Honourable Olivia Grange, has expressed sadness at the passing of the Jamaican author, Dr Hazel Bennett.

Dr Bennett, who served for many years as the head of the Jamaica Library Service, passed away yesterday at the age of 102 — hours before she was due to be celebrated on International Centenarians’ Day.

Among the books she wrote were ‘The Story of the Jamaican People’ (with Sir Philip Sherlock) and ‘The Jamaican Theatre’ (with her husband Wycliffe Bennett).

Minister Grange said Dr Bennett was “an exemplary woman who helped to transform and expand public libraries into islandwide spaces for literacy, and community development; and also advocated for the establishment of a National Library.”

According to Minister Grange, Dr Bennett was also an “outstanding educator who trained many of our librarians and advised on the establishment of library services across the Caribbean.”

The Minister said “Dr Bennett would be remembered for her humility, graciousness and commitment to her country”.

The Minister has expressed condolences to her family.

The Minister of Culture, Gender, Entertainment and Sport, the Honourable Olivia Grange, has said that this year’s Labour Day will focus on the restoration of sports, early childhood and community facilities.

The focus was selected in the context of the devastating hurricane Melissa which affected Jamaica last October.

The Minister also announced that there will be two national projects this year.

“One of the projects will be in Western Jamaica which was severely affected by hurricane Melissa. That project will involve significant work at the Lewis Town Early Childhood Institution in St Elizabeth,” said Minister Grange.

She said the school suffered severe damage during the hurricane, “and so we will all come together to ensure that we can restore a safe and comfortable place for the children to learn and to grow.”

This year’s other national project will be rehabilitation and construction works at Sabina Park, one of the country’s premier sports venues.

The Minister said the “much needed works at Sabina Park will enable the venue to successfully host upcoming international cricket assignments” including the Sri Lanka tour of the West Indies and the return of the Caribbean Premier League to Jamaica.

As usual, each municipality will lead a project on Labour Day.

Minister Grange said: “I’m encouraging everyone to let us put work into Labour Day. There is much for us to do as we continue to recover from last year’s devastating hurricane and prepare for this year’s hurricane season, which begins on June one.”

Labour Day will be observed on Monday, May 25 because the 23rd falls on a Saturday.

The theme is ‘One People, One Purpose: In all things Jamaica Wins’.

Labour Day will culminate Workers’ Week, which will commence with a Thanksgiving Service on Sunday, May 17, at the St John’s Methodist Church in Montego Bay, St James.
