Broadcasting Commission-Jamaica Regulating JA's Radio, TV & Cable sectors; Facilitating Nextgen TV in JA; Digital Literacy Champion!

The Broadcasting Commission is an independent statutory agency established in June 1986. It falls under the ambit of the Minister with responsibility for Information. The Commission is mandated by the Broadcasting and Radio Re-diffusion Act (BRRA) to monitor and regulate free-to-air television, broadcast radio and subscriber television (Cable) services to ensure their operation at appropriate levels in relation to technical, programming, and service standards.

In a crowded digital environment, radio cannot win by being more of the same.

Cordel Green’s latest article argues that radio’s relevance now depends on what it uniquely offers: cultural curation, human judgment, and the power to elevate local creativity in a way algorithms alone cannot.

As he notes, “As a cultural super-state whose reggae is enshrined by UNESCO as intangible heritage, radio should serve as the amplifier of local creativity.”

Kimko Scott, Lecturer/ Coordinator, Bachelor of Arts, Journalism, Carimac UWI, in her address, explained that, "The future of media is rooted in our response to significant changes in the media ecosystem.

As Jamaica prepares for the upcoming hurricane season, two things remain important: time and truth. Timely, accurate information can save lives.

The United Nations Educational, Scientific, and Cultural Organization (UNESCO), in partnership with the Broadcasting Commission of Jamaica, CARIMAC (UWI), and the Jamaican National Commission for UNESCO, is hosting a Community Radio Preparedness & Response Training Workshop and Field Simulation from April 27 to May 2, 2026.

Participants will gain hands-on training in:
* Emergency communication systems
* Community radio setup & operations
* Information verification & combating misinformation
* Disaster risk reduction & early warning
Preparation is the quiet work that turns uncertainty into confidence and crisis into control. It strengthens communities when it matters most.
