Community Sunday: Empowering Our Farmers

Knowledge is the seed of success. We previously teamed up with radajm and WUSC Caribbean at Ebony Agro Park for a specialized training session on irrigation systems and sweet potato cultivation.

Our farmers have since been better equipped with the tools for sustainability and higher yields as we continue our mission for agricultural excellence.

Official Press Release: Essex Valley Farmers Equipped for Greater Production

Agro-Invest, in collaboration with the Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Mining, has officially handed over agricultural equipment, irrigation supplies, fertiliser inputs, and land-clearing assistance to the Essex Valley Farmers Benevolent Society, part of a broader effort to strengthen the area's development as a structured Agro Economic Zone.

The handover, held at the recently opened Essex Valley Agro Processing Facility, comes as farmers continue recovering from Hurricane Melissa while navigating current dry conditions. Support includes black water tanks, irrigation drip tape, walk-behind tractors, w**d wackers, chainsaws, fertiliser inputs, and land-clearing assistance for approximately 10 acres.

"Food security is as important as national security," said Minister Floyd Green, emphasizing that the investments in Essex Valley are designed to translate directly into increased production and improved livelihoods for farmers.

The Agro-Investment Corporation has officially handed over equipment, input supplies, and land clearing services to farmers of the Essex Valley Farmers' Benevolent Society, as part of the Essex Valley Agro Economic Zone Handover held on September 2, 2026, at the Essex Valley Agro Processing Facility.

The handover included water tanks, irrigation drip tape, handheld tractors, w**ders/wackers, chainsaws, agricultural fertiliser inputs, and land-clearing assistance for 10 acres, along with additional supplies from the 1000-Acres Boost Recovery Programme.

The ceremony also marked the official opening of the Essex Valley Farmers' Benevolent Society Office, capped off with a ribbon-cutting and unveiling of the equipment, a significant step forward in giving the Society a dedicated space to serve its farmers.

Speaking at the ceremony, Hon. Floyd Green, MP, Minister of Agriculture, Fisheries and Mining, delivered the Keynote Address, highlighting the importance of continued investment in the agricultural sector and the role farmers play in strengthening Jamaica's food security.

The event was attended by government officials, representatives from the National Irrigation Commission and RADA, and members of the Essex Valley Farmers' Benevolent Society, whose membership exceeds 280 farmers.

"Agriculture is Jamaica's next growth industry," was the message echoed throughout the ceremony, as Agro-Invest reaffirmed its commitment to supporting farmers across the island with the tools, resources, and infrastructure needed to grow.

Turning Heat Into Opportunity: Solar-Powered Irrigation Comes to Manchester ☀️

Hon. Minister Floyd Green has a message for farmers navigating the changing climate: don't just endure it, adapt to it. That philosophy came to life at the commissioning of a new $37.8 million, 150-kilowatt Solar Photovoltaic Pump Station in Duff House, Manchester.

"Using the changing climate to our benefit, because there is elevated heat and longer periods of sunlight, so let us convert that into energy," Minister Green said.

The numbers behind this investment are significant:

256 bifacial photovoltaic panels, each generating 525 watts

Serves approximately 457 farmers across 437 hectares in Logwood, Plumwood, Duff House, and New Forest

Generates 276 megawatt-hours of renewable energy annually

Reduces dependency on the JPS grid by over 30%, saving an estimated $14.8 million per year

This is just one part of a bigger push. The NIC has already installed 11 similar systems island-wide, generating a combined 1.2 megawatts. By year-end, two more major systems are set to come online: a 3.1-megawatt system supporting the Essex Valley Irrigation System, and a 100-kilowatt system for the Southern Plains, bringing total renewable capacity to 4.4 megawatts.

NIC CEO Joseph Gyles summed up the bigger picture: "Water today, food tomorrow... the decisions we make about water today have consequences that extend far beyond the immediate operation of an irrigation system."

This is what building climate resilience actually looks like, real infrastructure, real savings, and real water security for farmers who need it most.
