The Land Information Council of Jamaica (LICJ) was established in 1992 to promote the use of Geographic Information Systems (GIS) to support sustainable decision-making in Jamaica with 80+ members from various sectors. The Land Information Council of Jamaica (LICJ) is responsible for coordinating the development, implementation, maintenance and management of a national networked GIS for Jamaica.

🌎 World Humanitarian Day 2026: Jamaica on the Global Humanitarian Mapping Stage
As we marked World Humanitarian Day 2026 on August 19, Jamaica contributed to the important global conversation on the role of geospatial technology and community mapping in disaster preparedness and humanitarian response, during the Humanitarian OpenStreetMap Team (HOT) webinar, “When Disaster Strikes, It’s Time to Map: Lessons on Community Mapping for Humanitarian Response and Preparedness.”
The session brought together practitioners from Jamaica, Malawi, Indonesia and the Humanitarian OpenStreetMap Team to share experiences on how collaborative mapping and geospatial data can support better preparedness, faster response and more informed decision-making when disasters strike.
Lloyd and Kennedy represented Jamaica's National Spatial Data Management Branch (NSDMB) and National Emergency Response GIS Team (NERGIST).

Observing World Humanitarian Day 2026

In celebration of World Humanitarian Day 2026, The Humanitarian OpenStreetMap Team (HOT) will be hosting a webinar exploring the critical role of community mapping in disaster preparedness and humanitarian response.

CARIGEO hosts Side Events at 16th UN-GGIM in New York

This week the Caribbean Geospatial Development Initiative (CARIGEO) Steering Committee successfully hosted two side events for Caribbean Member States on the margins of the 16th UN-GGIM Session in New York.

1st CARIGEO Side Event:
Caribbean Member States collectively re-examined the 16th UN-GGIM Session agenda items and strategically determined which items to address as country interventions, given national and regional geospatial priorities and concerns.

2nd CARIGEO Side Event:
Facilitated engaging dialogue among UN-GGIM: Americas, UNECLAC, SIRGAS and Caribbean Member States on potential strategies to promote and strengthen geospatial information advancement within the region. Discussions included geospatial capacity building initiatives and global frameworks implementation within the region.

Today, Jamaica's Permanent Representative to the United Nations, His Excellency Ambassador Brian Wallace, met with the Jamaican Delegation attending the 16th UN-GGIM Session at United Nations Headquarters on the opening day of the official meetings.

The five (5) member delegation comprises esteemed delegates from the Ministry of Economic Growth & Infrastructure Development’s (MEGID) - National Spatial Data Management Branch (NSDMB), the National Land Agency (NLA), the Planning Institute of Jamaica (PIOJ), and the Statistical Institute of Jamaica (STATIN)

Ambassador Wallace congratulated the delegation on the Government of Jamaica's recent landmark achievement, as The Most Honourable Prime Minister Dr. Andrew Holness accepted the Esri President's Award at the Esri User Conference held in San Diego in July 2026. The award recognized Jamaica's outstanding application of GIS technology in disaster response and recovery following the impact of Hurricane Melissa.

He also commended the geospatial and statistical delegates for their invaluable contributions to Jamaica's nearly 35-year geospatial journey, as well as their ongoing support of national response and recovery efforts.

Ambassador Wallace and the Jamaican Delegation were joined by members of the Jamaica Permanent Mission and other proud Jamaicans attending the session, highlighting Jamaica's strong presence and continued leadership in the geospatial community.

Part 1 of 2 | Over three impactful days, the National Spatial Data Management Branch (NSDMB) and the Land Information Council of Jamaica (LICJ) proudly partnered under Jamaica's National Emergency Response GIS Team (NERGIST) with and for the Drones, AI & GIS for Disaster Risk Management Conference 2026, held at the Montego Bay Convention Centre (May 5-7, 2026).

The conference brought together local, regional, and international stakeholders to explore the role of emerging technologies in strengthening disaster preparedness, response, resilience, and spatial decision-making across the Caribbean and Central America. Throughout the event, NSDMB and LICJ engaged participants through exhibitions, panel discussions, demonstrations, networking sessions, and knowledge-sharing activities focused on the advancement of Jamaica’s geospatial ecosystem.

From drone technology and artificial intelligence to GIS applications and public awareness initiatives, the conference highlighted the importance of collaboration, innovation, and data-driven solutions in addressing modern challenges. The event also created opportunities to promote capacity building, youth engagement, and cross-sector partnerships that continue to shape the future of geospatial development in Jamaica.

We extend our appreciation to the organizers, partners, presenters and participants who contributed to the success of this impactful event and helped foster meaningful conversations around technology, resilience, and innovation.
