Peace Corps Jamaica Celebrating 62 years of partnership and friendship in Jamaica. The official page of Peace Corps Jamaica. https://www.peacecorps.gov/jamaica/

The Peace Corps has been active in Jamaica since 1962, the same year the country gained independence. The Peace Corps traces its roots and mission to 1960, when then Senator John F. Kennedy challenged students at the University of Michigan to serve their country in the cause of peace by living and working in developing countries. From that inspiration grew an agency of the federal government devot

ed to world peace and friendship. Since that time, 200,000+ Peace Corps Volunteers have served in 139 host countries to work on issues ranging from AIDS education to information technology and environmental preservation. VISIT OUR OTHER PAGES:

Last Monday, Jamaica celebrated Labor Day with many community-led projects. PCV Zoey and Peace Corps Jamaica Staff member Ann participated in a primary school beautification project, painting the entire school alongside community members. It was a fantastic day filled with community integration and hard work— well done unu creating a welcoming learning environment for the students of Bowden Hill Infant and Primary School! 🎨📚🖌️

About a year ago, we said goodbye to members of Group 93 as they closed their two year service in Jamaica. As those who extended their service continue to ring out over the coming months, we’re pausing to reflect on their partnerships, contributions, and impact in communities across the island. 💛🇯🇲

Let there be water! 💧🌱

In partnership with the Peace Corps Partnership Program (PCPP), the United Way of Jamaica (UWJ) , and the Rural Agricultural Development Authority (RADA) , Volunteer Roshana and the Castle Hill Farmers Association worked together to design and install four rainwater harvesting systems to address water insecurity on local farms.

With limited water access and increasingly unpredictable dry periods affecting agricultural production, the ‘On-Farm Water Security’ project aims to strengthen farmers’ resilience and support more sustainable farming practices in the community. The aim was to sensitize members of the Grove Town community about the SDC and its efforts to establish the Community Development Committee (CDC) as well as facilitate other community based organizations.

Another one of our Volunteers who arrived in 2023 recently completed the customary ringing out ceremony. PCV John is returning home to his farm in Illinois after serving three years working with rural farmers and extending his service to share his expertise in pasture management at a deaf community in Manchester.

We want to thank John for his service, commitment, and contributions to Peace Corps Jamaica.

📝 Connecting cultures, one letter at a time!
PCV Kelsea has been facilitating a penpal exchange between her 4th-grade class in the parish of Manchester and a school in her home state of Maine. 🇯🇲✉️🇺🇸

As students practice their reading and writing, they are also building bridges across borders. Peace Corps’ goals two and three in action! Literacy and global friendship, growing together. 🌍💌

Alligator Pond is looking a whole lot brighter after Saturday’s beach cleanup!

PCV P***y brought together about 20 volunteers, including 6 PCVs, to clear trash from the shoreline in Manchester Parish. Councillor Omar Robinson joined the effort and helped rally strong local turnout, while Blackie and the team aLittle Ochi Restaurantpt everyone refreshed and energized.

Community-powered, partnership-driven, and full of heart...exactly how we love to serve. 🇯🇲🖤

First Harvest! 🥬

Using a recycled barrel and PVC pipes, PCV David and his 4H club designed and built a hydroponic system that just produced its very first lettuce harvest. Projects like these show how creative, low-cost agricultural solutions can support sustainable food production and community learning.
