Jamaica’s native plants and animals are at the heart of healthy ecosystems, helping nature remain strong while supporting communities and eco-tourism opportunities. However, many of these species face growing threats from invasive plants that compete for space, food, and habitat.

Through the Mason River project, important steps have been taken to restore the area’s natural balance. Invasive species such as bamboo (Bambusa vulgaris) and the Vampire Fern (Dicranopteris pectinata) have been removed, while native species like (Bactris jamaicana) — a unique Jamaican palm — are being reintroduced. These efforts help to strengthen biodiversity and protect Jamaica’s natural heritage for future generations.

Biodiversity is more than just the variety of plants and animals around us — it is the foundation that allows both nature and people to thrive together.

Today, the Mason River Protected Area is stronger, healthier, and better able to support both the environment and surrounding communities, thanks to great collective support from our partners and valued stakeholders!

Special thanks to United Nations Development Programme Jamaica and the Global Environment Facility Small Grants Programme for their valued partnership and support in advancing this important initiative.

Today, on the International Day for Biological Diversity 2026, we join the global call to action under the theme: “Acting Locally for Global Impact.” 🌿🌎

Across Jamaica, meaningful conservation efforts are creating lasting change for biodiversity, communities, and future generations. This year’s featured documentary highlights inspiring local action in protecting the natural heritage that sustains us all:

🪸 and safeguarding coral reefs that nurture fish populations and support fisherfolk in St. Mary.

🦇 protecting the endangered Jamaican Flower Bat (Phyllonycteris aphylla) in Portland.

🌱 conserving native flora within the Mason River Protected Area in Clarendon.

These efforts remind us that every action — no matter how small — contributes to healthier ecosystems, stronger communities, and global biodiversity goals. Together, our collective work strengthens Jamaica’s biodiversity and safeguards the ecosystems upon which our lives depend.

Today, we celebrate and commend all those working tirelessly to protect Jamaica’s natural environment. 💚

We extend sincere thanks to the Ministry of Water, Environment & Climate Change for bringing this important initiative together, and to UNDP Jamaica and Local Action Global Impact for their invaluable partnership and support in advancing biodiversity conservation across Jamaica.
