An early 20th C house at the back of St. Andrew High School for Girls at 11A Hope Road - It was the Fay Simpson Preparatory School which operated from 1950-2012 by Mrs. Fay Simpson, nee Carpenter.

It was originally the home of Mr. W.A. Carpenter and his wife. Their daughter was Mrs. Fay Simpson, nee Carpenter, 1926-2012, who ran a preparatory school there from 1950, for 62 years. She was also a dance instructor. The property was originally, 11 Hope Road, known as "Radnor", and it appears that it was subdivided into 11A and 11B Hope Road. 11 B is a supermarket. Mrs. Simpson was one of Jamaica's exceptional early childhood educators. She attended St. Andrew Preparatory School and St. Andrew High School for Girls.

This house, which is to the back of St. Andrew High School, was bought by St. Andrew High in 2019 as an extension to the school.

The Gleaner Company Ltd - starting a new phase in its history. After 57 years (from 1969) at 7 North Street, corner of East Street, the Gleaner, the old lady of North Street, has relocated to Lyndhurst Road. The Gleaner, founded in 1834, is facing the same challenges as many other newspapers worldwide posed by social media and online media operations. Let us hope that this historic newspaper can weather the business storms.

Building at 18 East Street, Kingston - it is possible that it might soon be demolished. It appears that a house was at this location in the 1890s. The second photograph might be part of this house. From about 1900, it was a commercial establishment - from the 1900s, it was operated by W. Vietch, doing dying and renovations; in the 1940s, it was a radio service owned by Roy S. Gordon and a grocery and hardware (Hercules (Fenton's) Hardware; in the 1950's, it was operated by Matthew Chin Shek-Ling; and from the 1960s onward, Ronald C. Chin - Customs Broker. It is noted that Ronald Chin died in 1994.

Laughing Waters, St. Ann - This is a most beautiful property. Apparently, it was once part of the Roaring River Plantation. It was bought by Sir John Pringle, 1849-1925. It was left to his daughter, Minie Isabel McKenzie Pringle Simson (1890-1980).

It seems that this property was owned by George Farkas, an American millionaire businessman/hotelier, from possibly the 1950s to the early 1980s. Mr. Farkas was associated with the Jamaican Hilton Hotel. The Government of Jamaica bought Laughing Waters in the 1980s from Mr. Farkas' estate for use as a protocol house.

It is now still owned by the Government and manged by the Urban Development Corporation (UDC).

Baptist Church at Alps in the Cockpit Country, Trelawny.

It appears that this is one of the first Baptist churches built in upper Trelawny. It is believed to have been built before the end of slavery but the date is not known. We are trying to find it. We have contacted the Jamaica Baptist Union. The church had some roof damage during Hurricane Melissa.

Can anyone provide information about this church?

Marcus Mosiah Garvey (1887-1940) and St. Ann's Bay, St. Ann, Jamaica - this was where Marcus Garvey, National Hero, grew up. The Government is still trying to finalize acquisition of the property where Garvey lived:

Visit to Seville Heritage Park, Sr. Ann's Bay, St. Ann, Jamaica on March 1, 2026 - visiting Seville Plantation with its 18th C great house and other sites where various cultures and ethnicities met - Tainos, Spanish, Africans, and British. The site includes the ruins of New Seville where the Spanish built their first town and Christopher Columbus spent a year (June 1503–June 1504) after being shipwrecked. This Heritage Park is on the UNESCO tentative list of World Heritage Sites for Jamaica.

Jamaica/Cuba relationship in history - Jamaica and Cuba have had a long relationship going back perhaps to the Tainos and definitely with the Spanish settlement of the Americas starting in the Caribbean. There is only 90 miles between Jamaica and Cuba at their nearest point. Jamaica was a place of refuge for Cubans involved in the long struggle to gain their independence and the abolition of slavery there from the 1820s. Cuban independence hero, Jose Marti, is recorded as visiting Jamaica at least twice, in 1891 and 1894. Cuban migrants to Jamaica from the 1860s helped to upgrade Jamaica's sugar industry and developed Jamaica's to***co industry. Jamaicans went to work in Cuba in the first half of the 20th C on sugar estates and on railway and road construction. After the 1959 revolution and the installation of the Cuban communist regime under Fidel Castro, the US imposed trade and other sanctions on Cuba. The US also maintained possession of Guantanamo Bay military base. Jamaicans found employment at this base. With Cuba isolated in Latin America due to US pressure, it was an historic development in 1972 when Jamaica and other now CARICOM countries established diplomatic relations with Cuba. Note that Canada has maintained continuous diplomatic relations with Cuba since 1945. Cuba has maintained a cooperation arrangement with Jamaica and other countries in the Caribbean since 1972. There have been programmes primarily in education and health. The Jose Marti High School, now technical school, was a Cuban gift to Jamaica in 1977. Jamaican students have studied in Cuba. There are currently Jamaican students in Cuba. Cuba has provided doctors and nurses to work in Jamaica's health sector. They have filled important gaps in Jamaica. See article at link:
