Together with the Caribbean Regional Fisheries Mechanism, the National Fisheries Authority will host this year's Caribbean Fisheries and Aquaculture Forum during the 20th staging of Caribbean Week of Agriculture.

The event will be held on September 30, 2026, starting at 2pm at the Senses theatre at Ocean Coral Spring Resort in Trelawny, Jamaica.

The National Fisheries Authority (NFA) is pleased to announce the appointment of Zahra Oliphant, PhD., JP, as its new Acting Chief Executive Officer.

A distinguished scientist and public sector leader, Oliphant brings more than a decade of leadership across organisational development, public administration, and fisheries. Oliphant previously served as the Principal Director of Fisheries Compliance, Licensing and Statistics Division at the NFA.

As NFA continues its mission to sustainably develop the Jamaican fisheries sector for the benefit of all, we look forward to Oliphant's leadership in advancing innovation and strengthening our sector.

Last week, 15+ fisherfolk from River Bay, Harvey, Whitehouse and Grange Pen Fishing Beaches completed the classroom and practical components of the training.

Together with representatives from the Caribbean Maritime University, the NFA trained the first cohort of fisherfolk in this year’s Safety at Sea training programme.

These fishers hailed from Rocky Point and Bournemouth Fishing Beaches in Clarendon and through a 3 day training programme, learned survival techniques, navigation including the use of the VHF radio, fire safety, and how to use different types of knots to secure their vessels and equipment at sea.

Big news for Jamaica’s fisheries!

The National Fisheries Authority is thrilled to announce the successful sea trial of its newest customized research vessel, designed specifically for pelagic fishing. This vessel is a key asset in the NFA's upcoming Artisanal Longline Fishery Initiative.

In partnership with local fishers, the NFA will be launching a Pelagic Fishing Pilot Project in three artisanal communities. The goal? To target premium, sashimi-grade large tunas for Jamaica's hotel and tourism markets.

The NFA is committed to building a sustainable, high-value future for our fishers and boosting Jamaica’s blue economy.
