The development of the Caymanas Special Economic Zone is expected to significantly boost maritime activity, driving increased demand for shipping services and creating opportunities for the establishment of complementary maritime businesses.

Director General of the Maritime Authority of Jamaica (MAJ), Bertrand Smith, told JIS News that the agency is positioning itself to ensure the country’s regulatory framework is equipped to support the anticipated growth in the sector.

Very impressive before & after demonstration of the hull cleaning and restoration capabilities of German Ship Repair Jamaica Limited, a modern shipyard and floating dry dock facility located at Harbour Head in Harbour View, Kingston🇯🇲

The (MAJ) supported and assisted with the establishment of the German Ship Repair Jamaica (GSRJ) shipyard in 2023, giving direct guidance and consultation on regulatory registration, local maritime integration and port standards, helping the facility register its floating assets locally, and to meet international maritime standards.

GSRJ operates a Panamax-sized floating dry dock that's capable of servicing commercial vessels up to 230 meters long, 33 meters wide, and 20,000 tons displacement.

The Jamaica Ship Registry Team utilizes events such as these, to meet and connect with key stakeholders in the yacht sector - boat owners, lawyers, captains, agents, managers, document agents as well as competing flags.

Understanding Jamaica's technical engagement at the International Maritime Organization - IMO:

Effective representation begins in advance of delegates entering the committee room. It requires preparation, regular contact and a clear line of communication between those following developments in London and those shaping policy at home.

The Maritime Authority of Jamaica leads Jamaica’s technical engagement at the IMO and regularly sends officials from Kingston to take part in meetings at the IMO Headquarters in London. They bring the specialist knowledge needed to examine proposals and promote positions consistent with Jamaica’s national interest and priorities. The High Commission’s role is to support that work and ensure continuity during periods when technical officials are not present in London.

From July 28 to July 29, 2026, the International Maritime Organization's (IMO) Secretary-General, Arsenio Dominguez, made an official visit to Kingston, Jamaica, organised by the .

Mr. Dominguez's visit coincided with celebrations of Jamaica’s 50th anniversary of IMO membership, and focused on visits and meetings with key stakeholders in Jamaica's maritime industry, with port operations and maritime education at the forefront.

An important takeaway from the visit, was the vital role that maritime transport plays in supporting Small Island Developing States (SIDS) like Jamaica, and the wider global economy itself.

From technology transfer and capacity building to training and so much more, Mr. Dominguez confirmed that the IMO is committed to empowering and continuing to work closely with Jamaica and other SIDS, to chart a smooth and resilient maritime future - because every one of us relies on shipping every day✅🛳️⚓

Seafarers are central to maritime safety and the sustainable operation of ships. Their expertise and resilience underpin the shipping industry’s ability to adapt to change.

Recognizing this, the International Maritime Organization (IMO) is working to ensure seafarers are well prepared for the energy transition in shipping, in line with the 2023 IMO Strategy on the Reduction of Greenhouse Gas Emissions from Ships.

This includes laying the foundations for harmonised global training standards for seafarers working on ships powered by alternative fuels and new technologies, through the ongoing development of interim training guidelines, the expansion of capacity-building programmes, and close collaboration with industry and academia.
