La Stazione di Monitoraggio della Fauna “I Variconi” e "Le Soglitelle" nasce ufficialmente nel Settembre 2014 da un Accordo di Programma tra l’Ente Riserve Naturali Regionali “Foce Volturno-Costa di Licola” e “Lago Falciano” e l’Istituto di Gestione della Fauna. Lo scopo principale, che ne ha motivato la creazione, è la valorizzazione scientifica ed ambientale del

l’importante biotopo palustre “I Variconi” (Zona Umida RAMSAR, nonché SIC e ZPS ) tramite progetti di ricerca e monitoraggio ad ampio respiro. Dal 2019, a seguito degli interventi di Tutela e Protezione avviati, la SMFVS ha cominciato ad operare all'interno della Zona Umida di "Le Soglitelle", trasferendone anche la Stazione di Inanellamento. Attualmente, le attività di Monitoraggio faunistico ricoprono l'intera Area Protetta dalla Riserva, con focus principali negli hotspot di Biodiversità:
- Le Soglitelle
- Foce dei Regi Lagni
- I Variconi
- Lago Patria
- Lago Falciano

L’istituzione e l’ufficializzazione della Stazione rappresentano, inoltre, il riconoscimento ed il naturale prosieguo delle attività scientifiche che da anni vengono svolte in loco da ricercatori, volontari ed appassionati del settore. Gabriele de Filippo

La Stazione ha finalità prettamente scientifiche e di ricerca, supportando operativamente l'Ente Riserve con i dati raccolti in campo ed affiancandolo nelle decisioni naturalistiche del territorio protetto. Contestualmente, la Stazione è in raccordo con le principali Università della Campania, attraverso percorsi formativi specifici, tirocini attivi e tesi di Laurea. 🐦‍⬛ The spring migration toward breeding grounds is currently in full swing. Within the Foce Volturno-Costa di Licola Regional Natural Reserve, our monitoring and bird-banding operations are documenting an intense passage of migratory species. The key wetlands of the area—Soglitelle, Variconi, and Foce Regi Lagni—are providing vital stopover habitats as the migratory flow reaches its seasonal peak.

​In addition to our standardized census activities, the area is bustling with birdwatchers contributing valuable sightings. This synergy between professional research and amateur observation leads us to a major upcoming event: the Global Big Day this Saturday 🌍

This international citizen science initiative focuses on recording as many species as possible within a 24-hour window.

​In Italy, the event is promoted by EBN Italia via the eBird platform. 🔭 Our team will be actively participating, collecting and uploading real-time data to support global avian conservation efforts.

🌾 The ecological transition within the reed bed habitats of the Soglitelle wetland is officially underway.

🔄 We are currently witnessing a distinct species turnover: as the wintering Common Reed Buntings depart, the summer populations of Eurasian Reed Warblers (Acrocephalus scirpaceus) and Great Reed Warblers (Acrocephalus arundinaceus) are establishing their breeding territories. Their complex vocalizations can now be heard consistently throughout the day and night.

‼️​Our recent bird ringing sessions have yielded extraordinary data regarding migratory connectivity and longevity. We processed the first Eurasian Reed Warbler of the season, only to discover it was a "recapture"—an individual originally ringed at this very station on May 1st, 2021.

​Observing this specimen exactly 5️⃣ five years later highlights the remarkable site fidelity of these trans-Saharan migrants. It reinforces the scientific value of long-term monitoring and the critical role that Soglitelle plays as a stable stopover and breeding site within the Mediterranean flyway.

Between Migration Routes and New Nests: An Update on Our Monitoring Activities 🔭

​Although spring migration is still ongoing, the biological cycle of many species has already shifted toward the breeding season 🪺. In sync with nature, our field monitoring activities are now in full swing.

​Our primary focus is currently on the colonial Ardeidae nesting in the heronries of the Volturno Plain. We are actively monitoring populations of:

✔️ ​Cattle Egret (Bubulcus ibis)
✔️ ​Little Egret (Egretta garzetta)
✔️ ​Black-crowned Night Heron (Nycticorax nycticorax)
✔️ ​Squacco Heron (Ardeola ralloides)
✔️​...as well as the rare and charismatic Glossy Ibis (Plegadis falcinellus).

​Simultaneously, the Surveillance Plan 🧐 for the Sacred Ibis (Threskiornis aethiopicus) continues. Now a stable presence in Campania, one of our main objectives is to document its first breeding event in the region, which we expect to occur soon.

🗣 ​We are thrilled to document a high-profile ornithological event within the Soglitelle Wetland. Last Sunday morning, during a guided tour led by LIPU experts, birdwatchers identified a Terek Sandpiper (Xenus cinereus), a rare and occasional trans-Saharan migrant in the Campania region.

​The Fauna Monitoring Station immediately initiated a dedicated observation protocol to track the specimen's phenology and foraging behavior.

This scolopacid, easily recognizable by its distinctive upturned bill and vibrant orange legs, has remained on-site since its arrival, utilizing the shallow ponds for refueling (stopover).

​Interestingly, the individual is frequently observed in mixed-species foraging flocks, showing high social interaction with Wood Sandpipers (Tringa glareola). Such sightings underscore the critical role of protected wetlands as essential ecological corridors for avian migration.

🇹🇷 ​A Turkish Traveler at Soglitelle: Records and Ornithological Insights

​Bird-monitoring at the Soglitelle wetland continues to yield high-value scientific data. During a recent survey, operators from the Wildlife Management Institute identified an adult 🦩 Greater Flamingo (Phoenicopterus roseus) bearing a color-coded ring for remote observation.

​The recovery of the ring code allowed us to reconstruct the bird's history: it was banded as a pullus in 2019 at the Gediz Delta (Camaltı Tuzlası) in Turkey. Seven years later, after traversing the Mediterranean, this individual was recorded foraging in our ponds.

🎖 ​This sighting occurred during a landmark event: the flamingo was part of a flock of 126 individuals, marking the official record for the highest number of Greater Flamingos ever recorded at the Soglitelle wetland. Such a peak in abundance underscores the site’s critical role as a strategic stopover and migratory corridor within the Mediterranean basin.

​Scientific bird ringing remains an essential methodology for tracking dispersal patterns and population dynamics, bridging distant geographical regions through the life history of a single bird.
