This is what embodies: bringing science closer to communities, schools and young people, and ensuring that ocean literacy reaches everyone, everywhere — especially across Africa, UNESCO’s global priority, and Small Island Developing States, whose futures are inseparable from the ocean.

Through UNESCO’s Intergovernmental Oceanographic Commission, 153 Member States are working together to turn ocean knowledge into action — from data and early warning systems to biodiversity protection and ocean literacy.

Discovering and caring for the lagoon through outdoor education 🌊🪸

On the last day of the Kindergarten of the Lagoon, children explored their local environment through curiosity, play, creativity, and hands-on discovery. 🦀🐚

On the island of Sant’Erasmo, they took part in free exploration and creative activities: observing algae and other natural elements under the microscope, experimenting with cyanotype printing and watercolours, and diving into stories through illustrated books.📖

Strengthening through 👩‍🏫🇲🇪

Last month, with UNESCO’s support, the Faculty of Political Science at Univerzitet Crne Gore delivered a Media and Information Literacy training for primary and secondary school teachers in Pljevlja, to promote and resilience to harmful narratives.📚🕊️

The training was organised within the Joint UN Programme ‘Enhancing Citizens’ Trust in Institutions and Building Resilient Communities’, strengthening teachers’ capacities to integrate into classroom practice, empowering students to combat disinformation and hate speech and promoting peaceful communities.🏫

Protecting in the Republic of 🇲🇩

In collaboration with UNESCO, Serviciul de Evidență și Circulație a Bunurilor Culturale Mobile organised a national training on "Protecting cultural heritage in case of armed conflict: implementation of the Hague Convention and the Two Protocols (1954 and 1999)", inviting specialists, defence force representatives, and international experts to discuss.🏛️🏺

The training proposed practical exercises and simulations dedicated to the intervention and protection of cultural heritage in crisis situations.🗣️
