Palazzo Pisani Moretta, Sestiere di San Polo, 2766, Venice (2026)

Nel 1742, con le ristrutturazioni quasi completate, iniziai a curarmi delle decorazioni… 🎨🖌️

Desideravo il meglio perciò decisi di ingaggiare i migliori artisti e artigiani della laguna quali il quadraturista Antonio Zanchi, Giambattista Piazzetta, Giuseppe Angeli, Gaspare Diziani e il celebre Giambattista Tiepolo, per gli interventi pittorici, e gli stuccatori Giovanni Rossi e Giuseppe Ferrari. E così, le loro meravigliose creazioni hanno dato il lustro necessario alla mia dimora.

Qualche anno più tardi ecco completato il soffitto della sala che oggi è chiamata Sala del Tiepolo, ove trovate l’opera del Maestro “L’incontro tra Marte e Venere”. La cornice ad affresco dello Zanchi presenta finti rilievi e satiri che simulano lo stucco, donando maggiore profondità all’affresco.

Pensate, ho pagato così tanto Il Tiepolo, il 24 agosto 1745 gli diedi ben 220 lire, pari a ducati 354:20 “per quadro in soffitto” ma credo ne sia comunque valsa la pena..

In 1742, the renovation works of the palace were near to an end so I began to take care of the decorations.... 🎨🖌️

In my life, I’ve always wanted the best so I decided to hire the best artists and craftsmen in the lagoon, such as the quadraturist Antonio Zanchi, Giaàmbattista Piazzetta, Giuseppe Angeli, Gaspare Diziani and the famous Giambattista Tiepolo, for the paintings, and the stucco decorators Giovanni Rossi and Giuseppe Ferrari. Their marvelous creations gave my palace the necessary prestige.

A few years later, the ceiling of the room that is now called the Tiepolo Room was completed, here his beautiful fresco is entitled: 'The Meeting of Mars and Venus'. Zanchi's frescoed frame features fake reliefs and satyrs that simulate a stucco, giving greater depth to the fresco.

Can you imagine that on 24 August 1745, I paid master Tiepolo 220 lire, equal to 354:20 ducats "per ceiling painting"?? But I think it was worth it!

Durante l'umido inverno veneziano i 𝒄𝒂𝒎𝒊𝒏𝒆𝒕𝒕𝒊 erano essenziali… ovviamente noi della famiglia Pisani abbiamo desiderato unire la funzionalità all'estetica e guardate: i nostri caminetti sono dei veri e propri gioielli, ognuno diverso e unico 🔥🎨

La bravura delle maestranze locali ha fatto sì che siano ancora funzionanti ma ahimé a Venezia vige un'ordinanza che ne vieta l’utilizzo per scongiurare il pericolo di incendi, fatali per la nostra amata città.

Ecco alcuni dettagli dei nostri meravigliosi caminetti…

During the humid Venetian winter, 𝒇𝒊𝒓𝒆𝒑𝒍𝒂𝒄𝒆𝒔 were essential... of course we in the Pisani family desired to combine functionality with aesthetics and look: our fireplaces are real gems, each one different and unique 🔥🎨

The skill of the local craftsmen has ensured that they are still functional, but alas, there is a decree in Venice prohibiting their use to avert the danger of fires, which are fatal to our beloved city.

“La Luce sconfigge le Tenebre”

La particolarità di questo stupendo affresco è la progressione luminosa dal buio alla luce che avviene tutti i giorni nel portego del Palazzo, quando il sole illumina gradualmente le stanze…
Il Portego, e così l’opera, essendo orientata da nord-ovest a sud-est, segue il sorgere e il calare del sole.
Al centro del soffitto, tra “La Luce sconfigge le Tenebre” e “Apollo con le Ore e l’Aurora” ecco Crono, dio del Tempo, facilmente individuabile perché rappresentato con in mano una clessidra…

Proprio in questa parte dell’affresco è presente un dettaglio …unico! Riuscite a scorgerlo?
Si tratta del nostro amato pappagallo di famiglia che già avete avuto modo di incontrare.

“The Light defeats the Darkness”

The peculiarity of this marvelous fresco is the luminous progression from darkness to light that occurs every day in the portego of the Palace, when the sun gradually enlights the rooms...
The Portego, and so the artwork, being oriented from north-west to south-east, follows the rising and setting of the sun.
In the center of the ceiling, between "The Light defeats the Darkness" and "Apollo with the Hours and the Dawn" is Cronos, god of Time, easily identifiable because he is represented holding an hourglass in his hand...

Precisely in this part of the fresco there is a… unique detail! Can you spot it?
It’s our beloved family parrot that you already know.

“La Luce sconfigge le Tenebre”

Nelle opere del Guarana si può notare l’influenza del maestro Giambattista Tiepolo.
I soggetti dell’affresco che adornano la prima parte del portego sono Apollo, dio del sole, delle arti, delle scienze, della medicina e della profezia, e Diana, sua sorella gemella, dea della caccia, della luna, protettrice della terra e delle bestie, che qui vengono rappresentati con i lori simboli iconografici classici: il sole e le frecce per Apollo e i cani, la faretra e la luna per Diana.
L’affresco narra la vittoria di Apollo e Diana che con frecce e cani allontanano le Tenebre scortate da pipistrelli.
I girasoli tenuti in mano dalle ninfe e dai putti simboleggiano il sole, la luce e la vita che trionfano sull’oscurità.

The influence of the master Giambattista Tiepolo can be seen in Guarana's works.
The subjects of the fresco adorning the first part of the portego are Apollo, god of the Sun, the Arts, Medicine and Sciences, the Divination, and Diana, his twin sister, goddess of the Hunt, the Moon, protector of the Earth and the Beasts, which are represented here with their classic iconographic symbols: the sun and arrows for Apollo and the dogs, the quiver and the moon for Diana.
The fresco narrates the victory of Apollo and Diana who chase away with arrows and dogs the Darkness escorted by bats.
The sunflowers held in the hands of the nymphs and cherubs symbolize the sun, light and life that triumph over darkness.

Una volta entrati nel Salone alzate lo sguardo e scoprirete la magnificenza degli affreschi del portego, l’ambiente centrale dal quale si diramano le antiche “camere” di rappresentanza.

Il soffitto presenta due grandi figurazioni allegorico-mitologiche realizzate da Jacopo Guarana ed ornate da decorazioni di Francesco Zanchi tra il 1770 e il 1773.
Durante le prossime settimane vi racconterò a poco a poco la sua appassionante storia e i suoi meravigliosi dettagli.

Partiamo con “La Luce sconfigge le Tenebre” , il primo appena superata la porta.
Il 700 è il secolo dei lumi e questo affresco celebra il trionfo della Luce sulle Tenebre della ragione che hanno dominato i secoli precedenti. Non solo, l’iconografia cosmologica vuole essere di buon auspicio per il futuro di un'unione importante per la nostra famiglia, il matrimonio riparatore del mio caro figlio Vettore con Cornelia Grimani…

Once you enter the hall raise your eyes to the ceiling and discover the magnificence of the frescoes in the “portego”, the main reception room, surrounded by smaller still impressive rooms.

The ceiling features two large allegorical-mythological figures created by Jacopo Guarana and adorned with decorations by Francesco Zanchi between 1770 and 1773.
During the next weeks I will tell you little by little its fascinating history and its marvelous details…

Let's start with "Light defeats Darkness", the first you encounter as soon as you pass the door.

The 18th century was the century of enlightenment and this fresco celebrates the triumph of Light over Darkness of Reason that dominated the previous centuries. Further to this, the cosmological iconography is intended to be a good omen for the future of an important union for our family, the shotgun wedding of my dear son Vettore with Cornelia Grimani...

Codesti squisiti pianerottoli danno lustro allo scalone monumentale del palazzo.
Si noti che non ho badato a spese incaricando il proto Francesco Zanchi del progetto decorativo e il terazier Domenico Crovato di scovare i migliori materiali.
Per i gradini venne usato marmo da Verona mentre per i pianerottoli da Rovigo e decisi di far realizzare intricati motivi decorativi floreali e geometrici diversi per ogni piano.

These exquisite landings give prestige to the monumental staircase of the palace.
It should be noted that I spared no expense by entrusting the proto Francesco Zanchi with the decorative project and the “terazier” Domenico Crovato with finding the best materials.
Different marbles were used for the project, marble from Verona for the steps while marble from Rovigo for the landings.
To add a twist of elegance I decided to have intricate floral and geometric decorative motifs different for each floor.

Immaginate di dover accedere ai piani superiori senza riparo dalle intemperie... inaccettabile!
Per questo motivo quando iniziai i restauri del Palazzo per prima cosa ordinai l’abbattimento della scomoda scala gotica esterna e ordinai la costruzione di uno scalone interno che più si confacesse alle mie necessità.
Per questa opera mi affidai all'esperto proto Giovanni Filippini che portò qui al lavoro i migliori artigiani: il burchier Antonio Biancardi per demolire e i tagliapietra Giovanni Bragora, Iseppo Fadiga e Antonio Fioretti per erigere uno scalone degno della sontuosità di Palazzo Pisani Moretta.

Presto vi svelerò i dettagli del progetto decorativo dello scalone monumentale il cui splendore rimane immutato tutt'ora grazie agli attenti restauri dei miei discendenti…

Imagine having to climb to the upper floors without shelter from the weather... unacceptable!
For this reason, when I began the restoration of the Palace, the first thing I ordered was the demolition of the uncomfortable external Gothic staircase and I ordered the construction of an internal staircase that best suited my needs.
For this work I commissioned the expert proto Giovanni Filippini who brought the best craftsmen to work here: the “burchier” Antonio Biancardi to demolish and the stonecutters Giovanni Bragora, Iseppo Fadiga and Antonio Fioretti to erect a staircase worthy of the sumptuousness of Palazzo Pisani Moretta.

Soon I will reveal the details of the decorative project of the monumental staircase whose splendor remains unchanged today thanks to the careful restorations of my descendants...

Palazzo Pisani Moretta è dotato oltre che di una porta d’acqua anche di un importante accesso da terra.

Nello spazio tra le due porte, veniva a crearsi un microcosmo autonomo grazie alla presenza nel cortile del pozzo privato e di piccoli magazzini per preservare generi di prima necessità. La porta da terra pertanto veniva utilizzata per l'accesso al palazzo delle maestranze e delle figure necessarie all'organizzazione della vita quotidiana, come una porta di servizio ma non per questo meno importante. La porta da terra del nostro palazzo presenta una squisita decorazione a bassorilievo raffigurante una conchiglia e due cornucopie, simboli di prosperità e fertilità e attributi iconografici delle divinità dispensatrici dei beni del mare e della terra.

Palazzo Pisani Moretta è ricco di fregi simbolici e dettagli unici che qui scoprirete con me durante questo viaggio nel tempo.

Further than the beautiful scenic water entrance, Palazzo Pisani Moretta has a very useful access from the ground.

Between the two doors it was like having a city in the city due to the presence of the well and of several warehouses in the courtyard and on the first floor. Workers and local merchants used this door from the ground to enter the palace, in a lively coming and going that kept the palace bustling of activities and visits.

The ground door of our palace features an exquisite bas-relief decoration depicting a shell and two cornucopias, symbols of prosperity and fertility they are iconographic attributes of the deities dispensing respectively goods of the sea and goods of the earth.

Palazzo Pisani Moretta is full of symbolic friezes and unique details that you will discover with me during this wonderful journey through the history.

Con la sua facciata maestosa che si riflette sull'acqua scintillante, Palazzo Pisani Moretta è un tributo all'arte, all'architettura e all'opulenza veneziana.
Il profondo restauro condotto da me e dai miei discendenti, ha riportato la facciata in tardo gotico fiorito all'antico splendore. Di colore rosa antico, essa è suddivisa in tre piani da imponenti cornici marcapiano e presenta due inconfondibili esafore con capitelli marmorei. Per accedere alla nostra dimora dal Canal Grande noterete l'immancabile porta d’acqua. Al Pisani Moretta ne abbiamo ben due, gemelle, ad arco acuto. Nei secoli scorsi erano questi gli ingressi ufficiali poiché la vita cittadina e gli spostamenti avvenivano per lo più via acqua. Un fatto osservabile nei molti dipinti dei vedutisti veneziani come il celebre Canaletto del quale lasciamo di seguito una veduta. Lasciate libera l'immaginazione per immergervi nella frenesia della vita veneziana al mio tempo, le imbarcazioni cullate dalle acque del Canal Grande, le visite della nobiltà, i balli sontuosi... tutto passava per le porte d'acqua.

Palazzo Pisani Moretta, with its majestic facade mirroring on the glittering waters of the Grand Canal, is a tribute to Venetian art, architecture, and opulence.
The profound restoration carried out by me, and my descendants has brought the late flowered Gothic façade back to its former glory. The colour of the façade is Antique pink, and it is divided into three floors by imposing string course frames with two unmistakable hexafores with marble capitals.
The official entrance to our palazzo from the Grand Canal is through the water gate. At Pisani Moretta we have two elegant twin arches marking the access to the Palace. In the past, those
doors were the official entrances since city life took place mostly by water, as depicted in many works by the famous Canaletto.
Let your imagination free to indulge in the Venetian lifetime of my era, the boats cradling by the waters of the Grand Canal, nobles exchanging visits each other, the sumptuous balls... everything passed through the water gates.

Enchantée.

Lasciate che mi presenti, sono Chiara Pisani una nobildonna veneziana e qui, in questa sontuosa dimora, ho vissuto per gran parte della mia vita.
Come la mia famiglia l'aveva ereditato dai Bembo, così io, quasi cento anni dopo, ho ereditato Palazzo Pisani Moretta nell'Anno Domini 1740. Sono io che l'ho reso ciò che è oggi ed è per questa ragione, per volere dei miei discendenti, che sono designata a condurvi alla scoperta del mio, del nostro, palazzo.
Sotto la mia egida ho condotto imponenti restauri, patrocinato i migliori artisti, arredato con oggetti lussuosi ed eccentrici attraverso i quali il mio animo ha trovato espressione. Ma ahimé, secoli di storia e vicissitudini hanno celato i dipinti che mi raffigurano, pertanto mi presento attraverso un dettaglio di "Dama con pappagallo", un'opera di Rosalba Carriera, ritrattista veneziana mia contemporanea, che ben mi si addice per la presenza della collana di perle con cui amavo adornarmi e di un pappagallo che rassomiglia molto al mio piumato.
Il soggetto è anonimo... ma chissà che in realtà non sia proprio io...

Let me introduce myself, I am Chiara Pisani a Venetian noblewoman.
It is here, in this sumptuous residence, that I spent most of my life.
Just as my family had inherited it from the Bembos, so I inherited Palazzo Pisani Moretta in the Anno Domini 1740, almost a century later.
What you see today is the fruit of my will and it is for this reason that my descendants asked me to lead you in the discovery of this. Under my aegis I have conducted massive restorations, sponsored the best artists, furnished with luxurious and eccentric objects through which my soul has found expression.
But alas, centuries of history and vicissitudes have hidden the paintings that depict me, so let me introduce myself through a detail of "Lady with parrot", a work that suits me well due to the presence of the pearls’ necklace with which I loved to adorn myself, and a parrot, that looks a lot like my beloved one.
The work with the anonymous subject is by Rosalba Carriera, a Venetian portraitist extremely popular in my days... but who knows, maybe it is actually me…
