Following the extraordinary success of the first two days, the Ocean&Climate Village in Cagliari will remain open until 15 October!

There’s still time to explore the connections between the Ocean, climate and life on Earth through four thematic journeys:

🌊 One Ocean
Discover the Ocean as one vast, interconnected global system, and explore how its different components are connected through the Spilhaus Projection.

🌡️ The Climate Engine
Explore how the Ocean regulates our climate by absorbing and redistributing heat, storing carbon and driving the movement of moisture. Discover the role of ice core research through Follow the Ice.

🪸 Biodiversity
Dive into the richness of marine ecosystems, from the extraordinary diversity of marine life to the wonders of the deep sea, through deep-sea specimens and photographs of deep-water corals.

🌍 Ocean Anomalies
Discover the transformations affecting the Ocean, including warming, acidification, deoxygenation and sea-level rise.

Through audiovisual storytelling, photographs, maps, objects, infographics, case studies and 3D models, the exhibition brings Ocean science to life.

What does a tiny alga have to do with the 2026 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine? 🌊🧠

Research into a light-sensitive protein found in a single-celled alga helped pave the way for optogenetics, a technique that allows scientists to control the activity of nerve cells using light. This work ultimately contributed to a new way of studying the brain and led to Karl Deisseroth, Peter Hegemann and Georg Nagel being awarded the 2026 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine.

From a tiny alga to a Nobel Prize, this incredible journey is an example of how the natural world is not only something we depend on, but also a source of knowledge, inspiration and innovation that we are only beginning to explore.

For children, Ocean Literacy can be everywhere: in a shell, a walk along the shore, a question or simply the opportunity to explore the natural world around them 🩵

🐚 This is the idea behind the Kindergarten of the Lagoon programme which, for over three years, has been bringing children outdoors to connect with the Venice Lagoon through observation, sensory exploration, play and hands-on activities.

🩵 At the heart of these meaningful experiences are educators, who create the conditions for curiosity and the opportunities for discovery and connection.

📖 Building on the experiences and lessons gathered through the Kindergarten of the Lagoon, we developed the Ocean Literacies in Early Childhood: Outdoor Education and Learning for Sustainability toolkit, a practical resource offering activities, pedagogical approaches and reflections to support educators in bringing Ocean Literacy and outdoor learning into different educational contexts.

To further support educators in this process, we also offer in-person training for teachers who want to develop and establish a similar programme in their own schools. Guided by our team, participants experience outdoor, place-based learning first-hand and explore how to create meaningful opportunities for children to learn with nature, build curiosity and deepen their connection with the Ocean.

By supporting educators, we can help Ocean Literacy reach beyond one programme and spread to new schools, communities and learning environments 🌎

Save the date: the Ocean&Climate Village is coming to Cagliari! 🌊

On 10 October, the travelling exhibition developed by UNESCO and supported by the Prada Group as part of the SEA BEYOND project will arrive at the Luna Rossa base ⛵️ taking visitors on a journey to explore the Ocean’s role in supporting life on Earth and the connections between the biological, climatic and geological processes that shape our planet.

Through four thematic sections, the exhibition brings together stories, images, data, maps and real-world examples to reveal how seemingly separate phenomena are part of one interconnected ocean system.

Learning. Connecting. Collaborating.

Earlier this month, 25 Master’s and PhD students and early-career ocean professionals came together in Milazzo, Italy, for the 5th EU4Ocean Summer School on Ocean Literacy & Collaboration.

🌊 This year, the Summer School focused on Blue Tourism in the Mediterranean and Black Seas, exploring the topic through the lens of Ocean Literacy, communication and collaboration.

Across the five days, participants:
🌊 explored how Ocean Literacy can inform tourism planning, destination management and visitor engagement
🤝 developed tools for transdisciplinary collaboration
💬 strengthened their science communication and public engagement skills
🧭 engaged with local stakeholders and explored the Capo Milazzo MPA
💡 worked together to turn their learning into a final project

One of the key lessons was that collaboration is a skill in itself.

Bringing together different disciplines, experiences, knowledge systems and perspectives can help us see ocean challenges differently and create new ways of responding to them.

🩵 This is at the heart of the EU4Ocean Summer School: creating opportunities for young ocean professionals to learn from one another, connect across sectors and turn knowledge into action.

You asked. We made sure the world could hear.

A couple of months ago, we invited you to imagine that world leaders were listening, and to share the questions you would ask them about the future of the Ocean.

Those questions are now part of ONE OCEAN, the temporary installation at the United Nations Headquarters Visitors’ Plaza in New York, placing ocean literacy at the heart of the international agenda during the 81st Session of the UN General Assembly.

Created with SEA BEYOND, the project by Prada Group conducted in partnership with UNESCO , the installation is built around the call to “Learn. Think. Act.”

ONE OCEAN guides visitors from awareness to action and brings the voices of young people directly into the conversation.

Ocean literacy is not only about understanding the Ocean. It is about empowering people to take part in shaping its future.

From young voices to the heart of global conversations: this is ocean literacy in action.
