In the last school year, Ocean Literacy got real 🌊💡

From laboratories on biodiversity to on-site ecosystem monitoring, or from board games on blue careers to a musical theater show, these initiatives show what happens when the Ocean becomes part of the classroom 💙

You thought this summer was hot on land? 🔥
The Mediterranean's marine life had something to say about it too 🌡️

🏆 June 2026 was the warmest June on record for the Mediterranean Sea.
🏆 Then July broke the record again, becoming the warmest July on record.

From mussels experiencing heat stress to species expanding their range, jellyfish blooms and fish changing their life cycles, marine heatwaves can affect species and ecosystems in very different ways, with effects that go far beyond what we see at the surface.

The Ocean may look different depending on where we stand 👀

🌊 From above, we might see an endless blue horizon.
🐠 Below the surface, an entirely different world unfolds, filled with life and wonder.

Different perspectives. One ocean.

This World Whale Shark Day, we're diving into the world of whale sharks, majestic yet vulnerable animals that share the Ocean with us 🩵

Ocean Literacy invites us to change our perspective and look beyond the surface, to see the Ocean as a connected system that shapes our lives, while recognising how our actions shape it in return.

Restoring an ecosystem is about more than putting nature back in place. It is also about creating the conditions for that recovery to last.

🌱 This is the approach behind Save the Wave, a UNESCO project in partnership with e.on , and in collaboration with the University of Bari, bringing together ecosystem regeneration and ocean literacy to protect and restore Posidonia meadows in the Mediterranean Sea, while reconnecting people with the Ocean.

Because restoration and ocean literacy are truly two sides of the same goal.

🌿 Restoration can help an ecosystem recover.
✨️ Ocean literacy helps people understand why that recovery matters, what threatens it, and how they can be part of protecting it.

Ocean literacy is not simply communication around restoration. It is part of what makes restoration last 🩵

From the poles, a world of ideas 🧊💡

Today we are celebrating the passionate students and teachers who took part in the 4th cycle of the SEA BEYOND Educational Module, translating the knowledge acquired throughout the module into inspiring projects showcasing the vital role of glaciers in the Ocean and exploring ways to protect them.

This year’s edition of the SEA BEYOND Educational Module took students and teachers on a journey from the poles to the tropics, uncovering how these seemingly distant worlds are deeply connected 🏔️🏝️

🩵 We are truly inspired by the amazing work created by the participants: their curiosity, creativity, and commitment shine through every project. And we are sure that the ideas they developed will continue to ripple far beyond the classroom, reaching and inspiring their communities.

Different contexts. Different approaches. One shared aspiration: a future where people and the Ocean can thrive together.

SEA BEYOND is the project by Prada Group, conducted in partnership with UNESCO since 2019, raising awareness of sustainability and ocean preservation.

We usually think of ships as vessels that connect the world. But they can also act as bridges between marine ecosystems 🌎

🚢 When they remain stationary for long periods, their hulls can become temporary homes for marine organisms.

The longer a ship remains idle, the more time these biofouling communities have to grow. When the ship eventually resumes its journey, some of these organisms may travel with it, potentially reaching environments far beyond their native range.

💡 A recent study by Tamburri et al. highlights the potential for the prolonged lay-up of more than 1,500 ships in the Gulf region to create a large-scale marine bioinvasion “super-spreader” event.

The Ocean is one connected system, and human activities can create connections between ecosystems in ways we may not always see 🌊

Looking for a fun way to keep the kids entertained this summer? ☀️

🥼Turn a few simple materials into an ocean science experiment!

With the “Exploring Density and Currents” activity, children can discover how differences in temperature and salinity create ocean currents and help move water around our planet, all through a simple hands-on experiment they can do at home ✨

➡️ You can find the activity sheet in the Resources section of our portal, so you can experiment, observe and learn together wherever you are.

And if you enjoy exploring the Ocean through hands-on activities, there’s plenty more to discover! After the summer break, come visit us at the SEA BEYOND Ocean Literacy Centre and explore this and many other interactive experiences designed to bring ocean science to life.

SEA BEYOND is the project by Prada Group, conducted in partnership with UNESCO since 2019, raising awareness of sustainability and ocean preservation.

They may be only a few centimetres long, but krill play a vital role in marine food webs 🦐

They feed on microscopic life and, in turn, provide food for many other species, from tiny fish to some of the largest animals on Earth.

💡 So when krill populations change, the effects can ripple through the wider food web. Pretty impressive for something so small ✨

🌊 The Ocean is one connected system, and what happens in one part can have effects far beyond it, including on our own lives.

This World Krill Day, we’re celebrating the importance of every tiny creature, and the big lessons they might have to teach us 🩵

The SEA BEYOND Ocean Literacy Centre is taking a little summer break 🌞🌊

After a first half of the year filled with ocean wonder and inspiring events, we’re taking a short pause. But don’t worry! We’ll be back in September with an exciting programme of events and plenty of new opportunities to learn, connect and be inspired by the Ocean! ✨

A heartfelt thank you to all the visitors from around the world who joined us on this journey of discovery, bringing their curiosity and passion for the Ocean. We can’t wait to welcome you back!

Until then, enjoy the summer, stay curious and keep connecting with the Ocean 💙
