A'sodëi SMACH Biennale!

More than a year of work comes to an end, a journey that started in the summer of 2024 with the selection of the theme (thanks to and for the ideas) and continued in the autumn and winter of the same year with the writing of the open call and its release. The submissiom period ran until February 2025, then we had the jury meetings in March, the production of the artworks and the setup between April and June. On july 12 there was the opening and last week we eventually finisched dismantling all the artworks.

Now is the time for the acknowledgments. So thanks to the 283 creatives who submitted their work, thanks to the 11 jury members, thanks to the 10 winners, thanks to the nearly 30 volunteers who helped us, thanks to the 7 members of the SMACH board, thanks to the sponsors, and thanks to all the visitors!

Did you know that this year's SMACH Biennale featured 11 works? The eleventh is ‘Hortus Pictus’, 's special project at Kronplatz-Plan de Corones, created in collaboration with the and . The 33 flags were hand-painted with the help of Elena Tomasi, Lorena Gelli, and all the students of the painting course at the Casa delle Arti in Comacchio. But what do the golden illustrations on black drapes represent? ‘Hortus Pictus’ means ‘painted garden’ in Latin and is not only the title of the work but also of the 18 volumes - with over 8,000 woodcuts of plants - that Ulisse Aldrovandi (1522-1605) collected over 40 years of research. Today, these publications are kept at the University Library of Bologna and are considered a masterpiece of encyclopedism and botanical cataloging. The 33 flags you see here were illustrated by Buonafede and his collaborators based on the originals by the Bolognese naturalist and feature species of flora and fauna from Val Badia: arnica, orchids, bluebells, snowdrops, carnations, mountain geraniums, buttercups, anemones, gentians, pulsatillas, etc. 💐💐💐💐

Matteo Simondi's artwork, 'iCù', is a hymn to collaboration! Its creation involved the cooperation of and , two associations dedicated to the preservation and transmission of ancient artisanal knowledge. This year's SMACH Biennale theme, inspired by the whetstone and the relationship between humanity and technology, has been interpreted by .simondi with an installation that is a sort of 'noise intoner machine', like those by Luigi Russolo. When manually activated, the installation produces the very sound of a whetstone sharpening a scythe blade!

'.arexport' is the installation by translation collective. Nine stations with colored filters alter the perception of the panorama overlooking the marvelous peaks they overlook. We typically find these chromatic effects in smartphones. On Instagram they bear names like New York, Tokyo, Paris, Jaipur, Rio de Janeiro. These are the very same names you can also find in the analogic filters mounted in Ciampcios. Bringing these digital tools into the real world invites the public to reflect on the immaterial tools that modify real existences, the perception of them, and how millions of people publicly share (and sugarcoat) every details of them.

'Sway' is an installation activated by the wind, which, depending on its force, makes it gently oscillate or fully rotate. Lola Giuffré trained as an engineer but specialized in jewelry making, explains that her inspiration came from visualizing the trajectory of a scythe cutting grass. Manual scything has been used for centuries in the Armentara meadows, and its technique requires constant and repetitive movements. In her jewelry work, as well as in the creation of the concave aluminum elements of this piece, Giuffré employs processes like hammering that demand time, patience, and repetitive motions. Craftsmanship, moreover, reflects long working hours, in harmony with nature and the raw materials it provides. The combination of the technical and natural worlds is also made explicit by the choice to use tree branches in dialogue and collaboration with the other metallic elements of the installation.

This piece is titled 'With every step' and is created by Hans de Backer . It plays with the interpretation of the phrase it conveys, as well as the actual steps you have to take to find the right viewpoint to read the message. You need to move around a bit to find the perfect perspective where the 146 pieces that make up the text align perfectly, transforming the fragmentation into a harmonious whole.
This optical illusion is called anamorphosis, and it's said that Leonardo Da Vinci invented it. Hans definitely needed some genius of his own to create this work!

P.S. The work is visible in Tamersc valley, near Pederü, and the back side features the text in Ladin as well!

During the days (or rather, the nights) of the Perseids (the shooting stars visible, with a bit of patience, looking in the direction of the Pleiades), we'd like to tell you about a work of art that looks like a spaceship that has either fallen from the sky or is perhaps about to launch.

Titled 'Cu X', the piece by Luca Rossi playfully references the name of the multibillionaire's private space company that dreams of interplanetary life and fills the stratosphere with satellites (and space junk). The title also alludes to the human IQ, or intelligence quotient, another one of the billionaire's obsessions.

Jokes aside, the serious metaphor at the heart of this work forces us to reflect on humanity. In its attempts to overcome its limits can lead to failure, paradox, and the contradiction of life itself.

If Jocher's work (see the previous post) is an artificial stone, Lohrmann's uses real stones to form a whole that is artificial in its composition. Constructed with the primordial tenic of dry stone walls, ‘Stone Age’ presents the nevative silhouette of the whetstone at the 2600 meters of the Ju de Sant Antone. This is the highest work and requires the most effort both to reach it and (probably) to be produced.

We thank for the artist's hospitality and the artist, and his wife, who worked without our help for their skill.

A bizarre monolith emerges from the acidic moors of Chi Jus. From a distance it looks like a boulder, while at a closer look the doubt emerges, is that rock of the same color as the Dolomites a human artifact?

With 'Morph Module' tells us about the oscillation between organic and mechanical aesthetics, inviting reflection on the development of tools and technologies, their origins, current uses and possible future transformations.

This artwork is at Chi Jus, near the Monte Muro refuge.

'Trace of Land', by (Zhifei Xu, Zimo Zhang), a Chinese architectural duo based in France and the United States, offers a poetic intervention in the landscape of Sasso Croce ().
Using just a few elements—rebar, wire mesh, and a straw mat—they created a nearly 100-meter-long installation where the primary natural material is slowly degrading and returning to nature.
The installation is open to the public until September 14th, and you can find the making-of video by in the reels. While the installation photos are all by Gustav Willeit
