Committee on World Food Security - CFS The foremost inclusive international and intergovernmental platform for all stakeholders to work together to ensure food security and nutrition for all

The Committee on World Food Security (CFS) is the foremost inclusive international and intergovernmental platform for all stakeholders to work together to ensure food security and nutrition for all. The Committee reports to the UN General Assembly through the Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC) and to FAO Conference. Using a multi-stakeholder, inclusive approach, CFS develops and endorses policy

recommendations and guidance on a wide range of food security and nutrition topics. These are developed starting from scientific and evidence-based reports produced by the High Level Panel of Experts on Food Security and Nutrition (HLPE) and/or through work supported technically by The Food and Agricultural Organization (FAO), The International Fund for Agricultural Development (IFAD), World Food Programme (WFP) and representatives of the CFS Advisory Group. CFS holds an annual Plenary session every October in FAO, Rome. Find out more about CFS and how it works in the About section.

From Bangkok to Panama City, Geneva, Cairo, and Accra, the Committee on World Food Security (CFS) took part in the five Food Systems Transformation Meetings organized by the UN Food Systems Coordination Hub.

Held between March and May 2026, these meetings brought together representatives of Member Countries and relevant stakeholders, including UN agencies, civil society, private sector and academia, to present their plans, review lessons learned and identify opportunities to accelerate food systems transformation.

The CFS Chairperson and members of the CFS Secretariat were invited to present an overview of the work of the Committee and to show how its policy products can support the work of National Convenors.

Amid the complexity faced by these actors that are tasked to steer the transformation of our food systems, CFS policy products offer globally-agreed guidance, based on the multi-stakeholder and evidence-based approach that is followed for their development and endorsement.

CFS policy products are designed to help governments strengthen governance, develop evidence-based policies, and support relevant actors, such as National Convenors, striving to overcome political fragmentation and ensure coherence between national food, agriculture, health, climate, and social policies.

The CFS looks forward to strengthening the collaboration with the UN Food Systems Coordination Hub and National Convenors with a view to identifying synergies that lead to a systematic use of CFS policy products at country level.

The 35th Session of the Food and Agriculture Organization Regional Conference for Europe (ERC35), held from 11 to 15 May 2026, provided an important opportunity to convene regional dialogue and strengthen engagement on advancing food security and nutrition across Europe and Central Asia.

During the session, the Chairperson of the Committee on World Food Security, Anas A. Al-Nabulsi, highlighted that although many countries in the region have made significant progress in reducing hunger and improving nutrition outcomes, according to recent estimates about 24.5 million people in the region are still food insecure. Moreover, the region faces a series of interconnected challenges, such as climate change, biodiversity loss and land degradation, as well as economic disruptions and growing geopolitical tensions.

Together, these factors pose a systemic threat to food systems and their capacity to ensure food security and nutrition for all. With strong institutional capacities, innovation ecosystems, and effective policy frameworks, Europe and Central Asia can play a critical role in driving the transition towards more sustainable, inclusive, and resilient agrifood systems. Strengthening the connection between regional action and global policy processes remains possible through unified, inclusive, evidence-based, and cooperative approaches aimed at building agrifood systems that deliver food security and nutrition for all.
