World Food Programme 2020 Nobel Peace Prize Laureate. The World Food Programme was created in 1961, as an experiment to provide food aid through the UN system.

The UN World Food Programme delivers food and lifesaving support in crises and helps communities scale up solutions to hunger and malnutrition. In 1965, WFP became a fully-fledged UN programme, to last for “as long as multilateral food aid is found feasible and desirable”. Powered by the passion, dedication and professionalism of our 20,000 staff worldwide, the World Food Programme (WFP) works in over 120 countries and territories to bring life-saving food to people displaced by conflict and made destitute by disasters, and help individuals and communities find life-changing solutions to the multiple challenges they face in building better futures. We work to enhance nutrition in women and children, support smallholder farmers in improving productivity and reducing losses, help countries and communities prepare for and cope with climate-related shocks, and boost human capital through school feeding programmes. In conflict situations, we bring relief to exhausted populations and use food assistance to build pathways to peace and stability – work for which WFP was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 2020.

At 84, Aysha has been displaced for the second time in her life.

She was six years old when her family was forced to flee Haifa in 1948. She later made a home in Jenin refugee camp, where she raised her family and lived for decades.

In January 2025, Aysha was forced to leave again.

Today, she shares a rented room with her grandchildren, far from the home she knew for most of her life. Each month, she travels to a WFP-supported supermarket in Jenin, where she uses an electronic food voucher to buy food for her family.

Across the West Bank, more families are being pushed into hunger as violence and displacement disrupt livelihoods. Today an estimated 900,000 people are food insecure - more than double since 2023.

Yet just as needs are rising, humanitarian assistance is being forced to shrink.

From September, WFP expects to reach only 200,000 people in the West Bank — half the number it currently supports - because of severe funding constraints.

For Aysha, a food voucher helps her put food on the table as her family tries to rebuild a sense of stability.

Her story is one among hundreds of thousands. Behind every number is a person, a family and a place they once called home.

🚨 Flash floods and landslides in northern Nepal have claimed lives, displaced families and destroyed livelihoods.

At least 10,000 households are in need of immediate relief as communities cope with the aftermath.

Search and rescue efforts remain the priority, but access to some of the hardest-hit communities is a major challenge.

WFP is on the ground in Nepal and ready to scale-up its support to the Government-led emergency response as needed. WFP has already dispatched emergency food assistance for up to 5,000 people and is supporting the movement of critical relief supplies.
