🌍⚽🇺🇸 A historic moment at 🇻🇦Holy See!

U.S. Ambassador to the Holy See presented Pope Leo XIV with an official ball — a symbol of unity, sport, and shared celebration — alongside the Ambassadors of 🇨🇦 Canada and 🇲🇽 Mexico.

Together, our three nations are proud to welcome the world for the 2026 FIFA World Cup — the first time in the tournament’s nearly 100-year history that it will be jointly hosted by three countries.

Today, the U.S. Department of State announced a $240 million contribution to Catholic Relief Services (CRS). This grant will allow CRS to address urgent humanitarian needs arising from disasters and complex emergencies around the world. CRS's expertise, its deep roots in disaster response, and its network of local partners will help us deliver a fast, flexible, and efficient model of global humanitarian assistance. This grant is the first in a series of global State Department awards to trusted and vetted partners capable of rapidly responding to crises in America’s interest.”

“I am proud to make this announcement at the U.S. Embassy to the Holy See, together with Ryan Shrum, Senior Bureau Official for Disaster and Humanitarian Response, and my colleague Ambassador U.S. Mission to the United Nations Agencies in Rome Blanchard. Our Embassy was also proud to host a roundtable discussion on humanitarian relief with several faith-based groups including: the Community of St. Egidio, Doctors with Africa CUAMM, the Sovereign Military Order of Malta, Caritas Internationalis, and Catholic Relief Services” Ambassador Burch said.

Through this funding from the United States, CRS will provide targeted assistance for some of the world’s worst humanitarian crises, delivering life-saving assistance through local partners across key sectors including food, nutrition, health, water and sanitation, and shelter, among others. As we speak, CRS staff are on the ground in DRC, supporting the response to the Ebola outbreak. This funding will supplement CRS’s Ebola response efforts and their work to address other humanitarian needs throughout the country.

This contribution will also support CRS’s global rapid response fund, which will allow CRS to immediately activate its extensive network of local partnerships, including other Caritas organizations, to deliver assistance where it’s needed most, whether responding to sudden-onset disasters or addressing surges in needs within ongoing complex emergencies.

🇺🇸🇻🇦 Ambassador Burch was honored to meet with board members from Saint John XXIII Foundation while visiting here in Rome. Their good work supports pastoral care for Catholics in the Armed Forces and patients in Veteran Affairs Medical Centers. We also learned the foundation was named after Saint John XXIII for his service as a military chaplain in the Italian army in WWI. May God bless all those serving in our armed forces.
