Lombardy is one of the most advanced regions in Europe when it comes to water management for agriculture.
In the Lombardy Plain, more than 654.000 hectares of farmland are irrigated thanks to a network of approximately 40,000 km of artificial canals, developed over centuries and supplied by rivers, pre-Alpine lakes, springs (“fontanili”), and groundwater resources.
A key role is played by the Reclamation and Irrigation Consortia which manage hydraulic infrastructure, distribute water to agricultural land, ensure hydraulic safety across the territory and contribute to the protection of the environment and rural landscape.
Supporting these activities is CeDATeR, ANBI Lombardia’s Water and Rural Territory Data Center, which collects and analyzes data on irrigation, water resources, and agricultural water needs to promote increasingly efficient, sustainable, and knowledge-based water management.
🌱 Innovation, territory, and water culture: a system that supports Lombardy’s agriculture every day while addressing the climate challenges of the future.
