The roaring of the engine remains choked in the mufflers, the spotlights on the track have been turned off for a while. Silence reigns today at the Sant’Agata racetrack, the cars have stopped racing since 2009. Since then, Alessio Mazzeo’s dreams and trophies have moved thirty kilometers away, in Giardini Naxos: “It’s fine even so, as a kid I would travel even as far as Fiorino, Gubbio and Cassino. My luck struck when a passionate group decided to reproduce this track down to the scale, giving me a big helping hand. I will never stop thanking them.” Messina gives-away, the province becomes the homeland of model racing and now calling it home. “Despite having won numerous races, being vice world champion in two circumstances and holding the small record of a world championship final in each category played, it hurts not being able to race where I was born.” Behind a bitter smile, the hope of reversing a history of missed opportunities, giving it a date: “The leaders of the movement have assigned to this city The European Championship of 2022, Mayor De Luca has promised that we will be ready. We shall see.”
Alessio’s passion started early (1991), the turning point was enclosed in a precise moment: “Once again a European Championship, as an independent, in Belgium. This was a competition created to discover new talents, in which the thirty strongest athletes would not take part. With my father we had given ourselves the last chance, we were coming from a series of disappointing performances and he told me that if we did not achieve great results, we would call it all off. We finished first, with pole position and track record. So, the issue did not arise.” Coincidences, to be read as prizes for perseverance: “I was recruited by a team, and in 2013, in Autstria, I was finally champion of Europe among professionals”. A small hobby turning into work: “I am an entrepreneur, one of the few who alternates another profession with chassis and bodywork. This involves a reduction on my contract but also a protection for the future. Today I can live off sports, however if I had to stop racing, reinventing myself would have been quite complicated.” Even for toy cars, one’s identity has a hold: “You travel on the edge of tenths and the reflections represent the main component, inevitably at a certain age you are less performing. Without realizing that the new kid up could rise out of nowhere and defeat you, as I did.”
Physical and mental health are the right combinations to climb to the top of the world thus being an inseparable combo: “On the eve of a world championship, I happened to have health problems due to stress. The doctor gave me the authorization only a few moments before the take-off of the flight to Bangkok, though followed by an endless list of prescriptions and medications. I should have eaten only food from my country and drank bottled water. The team cared for me, booked a hotel close enough to an Italian restaurant and provided everything that I needed in the hotel room. It was at that moment that I had realized that my team wasn’t just my team but my family.”
“On the other hand, blood is the solid basis to every goal: “Car Modelling is the root of the splendid relationship with my father, who has always been my mechanic. The car, for example, can only be touched by him, he has secrets of which even I don’t know of. The day we won the European Championship, the cup had gone missing. I was standing on stage; he came up next time and held me and whispered to me ‘we did it’. A photographer immortalized the embrace and gave us the most beautiful shot not only of the career.” From one champion to another, Alessio’s next goal travels strong on all four wheels. “by chance I listened to an interview in which my fellow citizen Vincenzo Nibali spoke about his passion in this sport. I remember him as a child, when his father took him to the tracks. I’d like to get to know him and perhaps ask him to race together.” Wishes of the boy next door, dreams of a winner.
