Expressing solidarity with the sisters and brothers of the Sri Lankan people, I hope that with the resignation of the Prime Minister, Mahinda Rajapaksa, he will be able to smooth out the tensions that are felt every day in Sri Lanka and restore relaxation in relations between the community and the institutions, with these words , the International Director General of Joint Social Security - United Nations Intergovernment Organization, who invites the community to await the developments of those who are working every day to revive the fortunes of Sri Lanka.
He continues with a personal consideration, carrying out a foreign policy analysis, of the situation that is afflicting Sri Lanka, which is experiencing the deepest crisis in history, since its independence. From his assessment, H.E. Salvatore Abbruzzese, undisputed leader of the international community and close to Sri Lanka for years, identifies a series of problems that have dragged on over time lead to today's situation, given that the main economy of the island is based on tourism and export, that is, he believes that the facts have much more distant origins, in which after a discreet period for the Sri Lankan economies following the post-end resumption of the internal conflict, in 2019 cowardly terrorist attacks took place during the Easter period, which inevitably led to a drop in bookings tourism in the country, at the same time the authorities' choice to lower tax revenues by cutting VAT by more than half, bringing it to 7%, which consequently led to a lower income in the state coffers, with the advent of the Pandemic then the situation it has gradually worsened as after 2 years of blocking tourism, the main source of local GDP, the crisis has f able to feel remarkably, arriving at the beginning of this year with an economic situation certainly not easy for the Sinhalese people, but even more burdened by the invasion of Ukraine and the winds of war that derive from it, which has definitively KO'd at least for the moment the tourist economies of the country but not only, in fact among the multitudes of damage caused by this there is the increase in oil and consequently in the costs of all raw materials, it is enough to think that by increasing the costs of transport and electricity, all costs are tripled, as well as causing the paralyzing of the export of tea and other local products destined for the market in the former USSR, all this has inevitably led to a serious economic crisis and the default of national economic policies.
Now we are trying to take considerable steps to remedy these situations, understanding the state of mind and the tensions that may have been generated towards those who have governed so far, I hope that with the resignation of the previous government, the situation can return less belligerent to be able to stop the violence and mass protests, allowing the international community to work on a global plan for the economic recovery of Sri Lanka and beyond, but all this also depends on the people because tensions and riots must be stopped otherwise the resorting to the use of force and the proclamation of curfews and a state of emergency become inevitable.
Come on Sri Lanka, stand up in Peace, glorious more than ever.
