839th Transportation Battalion

839th Transportation Battalion This is the official page for the 839th Transportation Battalion located on Camp Darby / Leghorn Army Depot in Livorno, Italy.

"Chiave per il Mediteranneo // Key to the Mediterannean" For centuries, the port of Livorno, Italy has been an important commercial and industrial center for the Tuscan region. On 19 July, 1944, during the second World War, Allied Forces entered the port and found that the enemy destroyed much of the infrastructure in order to deny Allied use of the strategically located port facilities. However,

within thirty days of the Allied entry into Livorno, the harbor was cleared; port facilities were repaired; and the first of countless Liberty ships was docked and discharged. In July 1951, the U.S Army established the Livorno Port of Embarkation providing support to all U.S. military services in the Southern European Region. On 1 October, 1976, the Military Traffic Management Command (MTMC), assumed control of all U.S. military water terminal operations in the country of Italy. At that time, Leghorn Terminal was officially established as a subordinate command of MTMC's Terminal Transportation Group, Europe. In the early 1990's Leghorn Terminal served as a critical sustainment platform during U.S. military operations in the Persian Gulf. On 1 October 1997, the Leghorn Terminal was redesignated as the 839th Transportation Battalion (Terminal) and assumed mission command of MTMC terminals in the Azores and Greece. The mission of the battalion and its subordinate units was to plan and execute common-user water terminal operations and traffic management in support of U.S. European Command (USEUCOM) and Atlantic Commands. In November 1998, the battalion assumed increased responsibility within the European theater as the command charged with port operations in the Balkans and Black Sea regions. When the battalion opened the strategic port of Rijeka, Croatia, MTMC began supporting the Stabilization Force and Kosovo mission....a support effort that continues to present day. In January 2004, MTMC changed its name to the Military Surface Deployment and Distribution Command (SDDC). This redesignation imposed several changes to the 839th's focus and organizational structure...primarily the 839th's assimilation of the newly established SDDC Detachment in Izmir, Turkey. The most recent change to the structure of the 839th took place in 2007 when it formed and assumed responsibility for the SDDC Italy Detachment that is co-located with the Battalion headquarters on Leghorn Army Depot, Livorno, Italy. Today, the 839th TB is charged with operating strategic seaports and providing port management and distribution activities/services across three continents and two combatant commands (USEUCOM & USAFRICOM). This combined Area of Responsibility encompasses 131 seaports spread throughout fifty-seven separate countries on three continents. Forward deployed and ever-vigilant, the 839th Transportation Battalion remains true to its motto: "Chiave per il Mediteranneo" ... "Key to the Mediterannean."

🇺🇸 🇮🇹 Team 839th conducted a Staff Ride to The Florence American Cemetery in Italy.

This place honors nearly 4,400 U.S. Soldiers who gave their lives during the final year of the World War II Italian Campaign.

The cemetery rests peacefully in the Tuscan hills south of Florence, with rows of white crosses, beautiful landscapes, and memorials like the Walls of the Missing, a chapel, and detailed maps of the historic operations.

Established by the American Battle Monuments Commission, it stands as a powerful reminder of the sacrifices made and the lives lost. Dedicated in 1960, it continues to honor the Fifth Army Soldiers who fought in the Apennines and across Italy.

A truly humbling and significant place to reflect and remember. 🇺🇸 🇮🇹

Nothing brings a unit together like celebrating new life… and in this case there are 3 babies coming within the next two months!

We hosted a beautiful baby shower for three amazing members of our Army family, and it couldn’t have been sweeter. From games and gifts to laughter and great company, it was the perfect way to show our support as they each get ready to welcome their little ones.

🎨 Building bonds, one brushstroke at a time!
The 839th Transportation Battalion’s SFRG brought creativity and connection together during a Chatter and Splatter painting event.

Spouses, Soldiers, Civilians, and Local Nationals joined together for an activity filled with laughter and art as Jenny Hiatt, a Bachelor of Fine Arts graduate and the 839th SFRG Leader, guided everyone through creating their very own masterpiece.

Meet our new Battalion Sergeant Major! SGM Santos Lainez has been in the Army for over 20 years and comes to us from Fort Bliss, TX. We asked her a few questions to get to know her better as she starts her journey here at the battalion.

Q: Coffee or tea?
A: If I had to choose, tea, but I prefer sugar free Red Bulls.

Q. What's your vision for our team and organization?
A: My vision for our team and organization is to maintain a strong, united battalion that collaborates effectively to achieve the ARTRANS mission of providing global deployment and distribution support. I aim to foster a culture where teamwork, accountability, and innovation are prioritized, ensuring that every Soldier, DAC, and LN feels appreciated and inspired to contribute. My goal is to make certain that we are prepared for any mission while also supporting our personnel and helping them develop professionally.

Q: Who was the biggest influence on your career?
A: I can’t pinpoint a single person who has been the biggest influence on my career. I feel that every Soldier I’ve interacted with, collaborated with, or served alongside has played a role in shaping my career and motivating me to continue leading to develop young Soldiers.

Q: What excites you the most about working with this BN?
A: The unique and important role we play in supporting the Army and joint forces through logistics and transportation. The ARTRANS mission is critical to global operations, and I’m looking forward to working with such a talented and dedicated team. I’m excited to build relationships, tackle challenges, and continue to be the best ARTRANS that we can be.

Q: What is one fun fact about you that most people don't know?
A: One fun fact about me is that I enjoy indoor cycling and have participated in several spin classes. Indoor cycling is my preferred method of cardio and helps me stay focused. Fitness is a crucial aspect of being ready for any challenge, and I’m always excited to join a group ride or take on a fitness challenge with the team!

We are thrilled to have her on board and look forward to collaborating and achieving great things together!
