IL MAGLIO ZUCCATO by Giulia Zuccato II Maglio Zuccato is an industrial archaeological site whose history unfolds over the centuries and is intertwined with that of the territory on which it stands. It is located in Bannia, between the right bank of the Sile river and a Roman road still visible today. The large structure is a symbol of the important socio-economic role that the Maglio played in our territory: it was in fact a significant production center, which included a bat- ter, a carpentry, a millstone and numerous cultivable fields, giving work and accommodation to dozens of families. Further proof of the importance of the Maglio was the commercial network that it intertwined, ranging from western Friuli to eastern Veneto. There are also numerous The origins of the Maglio are historical: it is said that the foundations of the oldest structure, which dates back to the 15th century, date back to Roman times. Construction then continued in the seventeenth century: in fact, we find the Maglio in a map dated 1681 showing the second building that housed the millstone and the carpentry workshop. In the eighteenth century the Ma- glio was bought by Andrea Zuccato and since then it has been further expanded, at the beginning of 1900, between 1905 and 1911 by Prosdocimo Zuccato who has built testimonies that have come from the people who worked and lived in the Maglio: men and women, but above all children without a family, who were given a home and the opportunity to build the sawmill and the house above. When it was built, the sawmill was not the only one of its kind, but it certainly is now: it is one of the very few to save a profession. still functioning and active that you do not use. For nine generations, the Zuccato family has had the honor of taking care of the Maglio and sharing its history. Today, thanks to the interventions made, the Maglio is experiencing a rebirth: the machinery lows electric motors and automatic systems, but the hydraulic power, the mastery and the knowledge handed down from father to son by the artisans who, for more than a hundred years, they work there. The sawmill is called "venetian", built on the model of the sawmills used by the Serenissima. It works thanks to the wheel located along the course of the Sile river which, by turning, transmits the movement of the origins of the 19th and 20th centuries, as well as the carpentry workshop, which has been updated and brought back to full operation. Furthermore, new restoration works will soon involve the stables, which will be transformed to a transmission shaft which in turn allows the machinery to function. The sawmill was initially built in wood but due to wear and damage it was rebuilt after the mate in a habitable dwelling. Since April of this year, Il Maglio has been on social media: on Instagram and Zuccato di Bannia on Facebook, through these pages it is possible to contact owners, book site visits, learn more about its history and stay - re updated on news.
