This page is intended to provide updated information and discussion about NAS Sigonella. Please visit our official homepage at https://cnreurafcent.cnic.navy.mil/Installations/NAS-Sigonella/. Naval Air Facility Sigonella, Sicily, was established when the Navy obtained NATO backing June 15, 1959. In the 1980s, the designation assigned to Sigonella was changed from NAF to Naval Air Station, and is when its vitally-strategic geographic location earned the base its moniker, "Hub of the Med." Naval Air Station Sigonella provides consolidated operational, command and control, administrative, and logistical support to U.S. and NATO forces, and serves Fleet, fighter and family seven days a week, 365 days a year. NAS Sigonella supports the Fleet and combatant commanders as a critical power projection platform for ships, aircraft, and personnel into the region; and is the lynchpin in operational planning considerations for U.S. Central Command and U.S. As the strategic "Hub of the Med," NAS Sigonella's ability to support these combatant commands remains a crucial element in the success of U.S. military forward presence and global responsiveness, and contributes to maintaining regional stability.
