WE REMEMBER. WE WILL NEVER FORGET. 🇺🇸🇮🇹

Yesterday was a very special and personal day of remembrance for me and for all of us at NASSIG Fire & Emergency Services.

Our day began with a morning workout and Remembrance Run, followed by NAS Sigonella’s 9/11 ceremony, where I had the honor of speaking about that day from my perspective—not only as an American, but as a firefighter.

On September 11, 2001, I was seven days into a one-year tour in Korea. As I watched what was happening back home, I honestly wondered if I would ever see my children again.

And as a firefighter, I watched our brothers and sisters do what firefighters do.

While everyone else was trying to get out, they went in. They went up.

Later that day, Deputy Fire Chief Anthony Dobbins and I had the privilege of accompanying our Skipper, Captain Daniel Martins, to the beautiful Sicilian village of Nissoria.

Nissoria has a very personal connection to September 11th. Two of its own, Salvatore Lopes and Vincenzo Di Fazio, lost their lives at the World Trade Center that day. Their community continues to honor them and all those lost on 9/11 at Parco 11 Settembre.

Standing there with our Sicilian friends and seeing how they continue to honor these two men and the nearly 3,000 souls lost that day was something I won’t forget.

And our Skipper absolutely knocked it out of the park with his words to the people of Nissoria.

And I’m not talking about just any park: I mean Yankee Stadium.

Twenty-five years later, NASSIG Fire & Emergency Services remembers the firefighters, law enforcement officers, EMS personnel, military members, and innocent civilians who never made it home.

We remember their courage.
We honor their sacrifice.
And we will never forget. 🇺🇸🇮🇹🚒

For generations, firefighters have answered the call at NAS Sigonella, protecting the mission, the base, and the people who call it home.

The department has had several different patches over the years and each one represents a chapter in our history.

If you work/worked or were stationed with NAS Sigonella Fire Department, drop your patch numbers you wore in the comments!

🔥 BRUSH FIRE UPDATE – MARINAI HOUSING / 417 🔥

Good news, Marinai Housing residents.

As we like to say in the fire service, we have “cut the head off the snake.” Fire crews have stopped the primary threat to Marinai Housing, and the fire is now spreading away from the housing area.

At this time, the immediate threat to Marinai Housing has been significantly reduced.

We want to thank everyone for their patience and cooperation while our crews have been working this incident. Your willingness to stay clear of the area has allowed firefighters to concentrate on getting ahead of the fire.

There may still be smoke in the area, so please continue to use appropriate precautions as needed, particularly for children, elderly residents, and anyone with respiratory sensitivities. Please also continue to avoid areas where firefighters and emergency vehicles are operating.

We’re not finished yet, but the situation is moving in the right direction.

Thank you again for your cooperation and patience.

Marinai Housing Residents,

Fire crews are currently responding to a brush fire near the 417 and the on-ramp bridge adjacent to Marinai Housing.

🚧 Traffic in the affected area has been stopped. Residents are asked to stay away from the 417/on-ramp bridge area and allow emergency personnel room to safely operate.

Heavy smoke may be present in and around Marinai Housing. Residents should take precautions to limit smoke exposure:

• Stay indoors when possible and keep windows and doors closed.
• Avoid outdoor exercise or strenuous activity while smoke is present.
• Keep children, elderly residents, and anyone especially sensitive to smoke indoors.
• If driving nearby, use caution due to reduced visibility and emergency vehicle activity.
• Do not approach the fire area to observe or take photographs.

Please continue to avoid the area until emergency crews have the situation under control and traffic restrictions are lifted.

Stay safe and give our firefighters room to work.
