DOWEA is a field activity of the Office of the Secretary of War. Each region is managed by a Director for Student Excellence.

A page providing news and information in support of school-age Department of War Education Activity (DOWEA) children of active duty military and civilian employees. It is headed by a director who oversees all agency functions from DOWEA headquarters in Alexandria, Virginia. DOWEA's schools are divided into three regions; DOWEA Europe; DOWEA Pacific; and DOWEA Americas. Wi

Join us for coffee, cornetto, and conversation on Sept. 3rd 0830-0930!

Our conversation will focus on educational technology and we have some visitors from the DoWEA headquarters team. We're looking forward to a dialogue about AI & IT, and efforts to use technology thoughtfully and intentionally so it can elevate learning while balancing with tangible tasks (paper-pencil, novel or book studies, etc.).

If you can't make it to the coffee or you also have older students, there is a session at the MHS at 5pm too!

It was a great day to visit classrooms and see students in action around the school. You might be wondering what it means when we say teachers are establishing routines and laying the foundation for a great year. K-5 it can mean so many things: quick writes to respond to prompts, read-alouds, recognizing math in the world around us, sharing our ideas and reasoning behind them, forming habits at lunch, making classroom agreements, building reading stamina, playing math games to get back in the swing of prior knowledge, collaborating with our peers...well maybe it's easier to show you. Check out some of the many ways students and teachers were settling into school routines today at SES!

Mt. Etna greeted our buses this morning and she wasn't the only one who was erupting with excitement! Kindergarten parents came out for the Boo-Hoo/Woo-Hoo Breakfast after visiting classes. The rest of our students gathered excitedly in the courtyard and on the playground with teachers to welcome in the new school year. It was a great day and here are a few pics to share of the day. Yesterday was the Back to School BASH! We want to thank our NAS Sigonella School Liaison Officer for all his hard work in making this event such a HUGE success. Our families were able to connect with so many community resources.
We closed things out with our Meet & Greet. Thank you students and families for coming out in force. Our school's goal was to make connections with our students and families, and we did just that! Who did you connect with? Please share your connections in the comments! We want to see who you met!

Opening the school after the summer break is a time like no other. The Bulletin Board Squad, powered by the PTA and volunteers, gave teachers an AMAZING surprise by preparing the bulletin boards in the hallways, and in our school that's around 60 boards! 😍
All week teachers have been setting up classrooms, collaborating with their teams to plan instruction and routines, digging into data to form a school action plan for improvement, learning more about the Blueprint and Excellent Instruction, engaging in professional learning, and completing annual trainings. The buzz in the school has been electric!
You may wonder what continuous school improvement planning looks like, well here's a peek! We'll be sharing more in the coming weeks about our process, our plan, and how you can be a part of that work.

Reminder: The Back to School BASH with Meet & Greet is tomorrow (Friday 8/14) in Knight's Hall (gym/cafeteria). Connect with community organizations during session 1 from 11:00-12:30. Connect with teachers and staff during session 2 from 13:00-14:00. Between the sessions the gelato truck will be on site providing free sweet treats!

Your child's teacher assignment is accessible via Aspen, now. Check your email for details. We will also post class lists at the BASH.

Remember that school supplies won't be collected during the BASH this year.
