A wonderful afternoon celebrating His Majesty The King’s Birthday in Reykjavík 🇬🇧🇮🇸

It was a pleasure to bring together friends and partners of the UK to mark this special occasion at the Reykjavík Botanic Garden. We were delighted to hear remarks from Iceland’s Minister of Foreign Affairs and celebrate the close ties between our two countries.

Ambassador Bryony Mathew and the Icelandic Ambassador to the UK, Sturla Sigurjónsson, shared their views on the UK-Iceland relationship and the importance of continued cooperation and friendship 🤝

The regular Bilateral and Defence Dialogue between Iceland and the United Kingdom took place in Reykjavík last week 🇮🇸🇬🇧

The consultations reaffirmed the strength of Iceland – UK relations within the current global context, a relationship grounded in shared values and common interest. Iceland-UK cooperation extends across a broad range of issues including security and defence, people-to-people connections, gender equality, education, and cooperation in multilateral fora including the Human Rights Council, alongside an excellent trade relationship.

Both sides underlined their commitment to continue to strengthen cooperation and advance shared priorities in an increasingly complex global environment.

Úr grein sendiherra um Bretland og Norðurslóðir:

,,Norðurslóðir munu aðeins verða mikilvægari. Loftslagsbreytingar, tæknibreytingar og breytt alþjóðlegt landslag munu færa nýjar áskoranir og ný ábyrgðarhlutverk.

Í þessu samhengi verður Ísland, staðsett í miðju Norður-Atlantshafinu, áfram ómissandi. Bretland hlakkar til að halda áfram nánu samstarfi við Ísland, tvíhliða, í gegnum Atlandshafsbandalagið og sameiginlegu viðbragðssveitina (JEF) til að viðhalda stöðugleika, styrkja viðnámsþrótt og vernda innviði sem varða báðar þjóðir.

Allt þetta samstarf endurspeglast í reglulegu tvíhliða samráði Bretlands og Íslands, sem dýpkar samvinnu þjóðanna enn frekar.”

On this day we remember the Queen’s visit to Iceland in June 1990, where she and Prince Philip were welcomed by President Vigdís Finnbogadóttir 🇮🇸🇬🇧

It was a pleasure to visit the Ministry of Education and Children, where we discussed the Embassy’s education initiatives, school visits and other linked projects 📚

This event was part of our 1000 Futures project, where we are giving 1000 Icelandic children a copy of our book. The Ministry staff was happy to receive books for their children and grandchildren 📖
