We are pleased to announce that The Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology (MEXT) of Japan Scholarships for 2027 for Research Students are now open until June 1, 2026.
MEXT offers Scholarships to Iraqi nationals with a minimum of a bachelor's degree who wish to study in graduate courses at Japanese universities as Research Students (either regular students or non-regular students) under the Japanese Government (MEXT) Scholarship Program.
For those who wish to apply, please carefully read the scholarship guidelines, as well as all the information available on the Embassy’s website below, including the FAQs section.
It should be noted that the application and guidelines are only available in English and Japanese as students who wish to study in Japan must speak either English or Japanese.
We would like to also note that since 2020, MEXT has decided to suspend offering Iraqi nationals its scholarships other than research students scholarship program.

On 14 January, 2026, a signing ceremony for the Grant Contract was held at the Barzani Charity Foundation Headquarters. The Government of Japan provided financial assistance up to US $90,000 for the Provision of Mammography Equipment at the Breast Center in Erbil Governorate. It was signed by the Minister of the Embassy of Japan in Iraq, Mr. Hiroshi HONJO, and Mr. Karzan Noori, Head of Programs and Planning at Barzani Charity Foundation (BCF).

The project aims at improving the quality of medical treatment to be provided to people of Erbil and the surrounding areas, by providing a mammography machine that ensures the timely care and medical assistance needed at the Breast Center.

This grant comes under the scheme of Grant Assistance for Grassroots Human Security Projects by the Government of Japan. Grassroots projects aim to bring immediate and direct effects on improving the living condition of Erbil Governorate. The Government of Japan has carried out many such projects throughout Iraq, strengthening the relationship between the two countries.
