🚭 Building a To***co-Free India Requires Public Health Champions

On World No To***co Day, PVCHR highlights the urgent need to address the growing burden of Non-Communicable Diseases (NCDs) such as cancer, heart disease, stroke, and chronic respiratory illnesses linked to to***co use. To***co control is not only a public health priority but also a matter of human rights, social justice, and health equity.

As Dr. Lenin Raghuvanshi reminds us:

“Every public opinion is not policy. For that, we need champions.”

PVCHR Co-founder Shruti Nagvanshi emphasizes that stronger to***co taxation, prevention programs, and investment in healthcare can save lives and protect future generations. The fight against to***co requires collective action from policymakers, healthcare professionals, civil society, and citizens.

🩸 Menstrual Health Is Not Just About Hygiene—It Is About Dignity, Equality, and Justice

On World Menstrual Hygiene Day, our engagement with nearly 800 adolescent girls across 45 villages in Varanasi revealed a critical reality: menstrual health is deeply connected to access to clean water, education, nutrition, gender equality, and human rights.

Girls from marginalized communities, including Musahar settlements, highlighted how the lack of safe water and sanitation affects not only their health but also their dignity and ability to participate fully in school and community life.

Menstrual health cannot be reduced to the distribution of sanitary products alone. It requires addressing structural inequalities and ensuring that every girl has access to information, healthcare, clean water, safe sanitation, and a supportive environment free from stigma and discrimination.

The voices of adolescent girls remind us that development begins with listening, participation, and collective action.

The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) has directed the Commissioner of Police, Amritsar, to take action within 4 weeks regarding allegations that a young man was illegally detained and assaulted at Green Avenue Police Post, Punjab.

The complaint was submitted by human rights defender Lenin Raghuvanshi following media reports of the incident.

🚨 Gasht (गश्त): Campaign of Torture Survivors Against Torture

The People’s Vigilance Committee on Human Rights (PVCHR), along with Jan Mitra Nyas, has launched “Gasht (गश्त)” — a survivor-led campaign against torture, custodial violence, and human rights abuses.

For over 30 years, PVCHR has supported torture survivors and marginalized communities through psychosocial counseling, legal aid, rehabilitation, healthcare support, and leadership development.

This initiative aims to empower survivors as voices of justice, dignity, democracy, and non-violence while raising awareness about rights during arrest, custody, and interrogation under the D.K. Basu Guidelines and BNSS 2023.

✊ Key Rights Include:
✔ Right to inform family members
✔ Right to legal assistance
✔ Protection from torture and inhuman treatment
✔ Medical examination during custody
✔ Accountability for custodial violence

PVCHR’s work on testimonial therapy, Dalit empowerment, and restoring human agency has been recognised once again in the IRCT Annual Report 2025.

This recognition belongs to every survivor who transformed silence into courage and pain into resistance.

As Hugh Macleod from IRCT beautifully wrote:

“The power of narrative and restoring agency comes through your work with dalits and testimonial therapy.”

From Varanasi to global human rights platforms, survivor-led healing and dignity-based justice continue to inspire international conversations.
