In solidarity with the students of Pettigrew College, the Tangkhul Katamnao Saklong (TKS) Executive Council and Hunphun Katamnao Long (HKL) joined their democratic protest today, 08/09/2026, standing with them in their demand for immediate government action against the prolonged neglect of the institution.
More than six decades after its establishment in 1965, Pettigrew College, Ukhrul, continues to struggle with basic facilities necessary for students to pursue higher education.
With 1,321 students enrolled across 12 departments, the college is facing a severe shortage of teaching and non-teaching staff. The classroom situation is equally alarming, with only 10 usable classrooms against a requirement of 36, forcing students to attend classes in laboratories, libraries, auditoriums and even makeshift spaces.
Transportation remains another major concern. The college has only two minibuses, with a combined capacity of around 42 students at a time, which is clearly inadequate for a growing student population.
The infrastructure situation is no better. The Academic Block, boys’ and girls’ hostels and boundary wall remain incomplete, despite the projects having been sanctioned and their stipulated completion deadlines having long expired. Laboratories also lack essential equipment, while library resources and other basic facilities remain inadequate.
The concerns have been raised repeatedly with the authorities over the years through representations and appeals. Yet, despite assurances, decisive action remains absent.
TKS stands firmly with the students in calling upon the Government of Manipur and all concerned authorities to act without further delay and ensure that Pettigrew College receives the attention it deserves.
