‘DEMOCRACY ROOM’, A SVEEP INITIATIVE LAUNCHED IN NOKLAK.

As part of Noklak district’s SVEEP campaign, ‘Democracy Room’ was launched today in all high schools. Through this, the Office of the DC & DEO Noklak hopes to inculcate among students and aspiring voters the importance of electoral participation. Members of Electoral Literacy Clubs can now make use of the Democracy Room in their respective schools to engage in meaningful conversations and activities related to our country’s electoral processes and political system. Teachers in-charge of ELCs have been entrusted the task of organising the various activities in this regard.

TAKING TO THE SKIES : How a small town girl defied all odds to soar higher.

Few years ago when District Administration conducted an interactive session on career guidance with higher secondary students, several among them expressed interest in pursuing careers outside the conventional white collar jobs. The only problem was convincing their parents of the many opportunities which exist apart from Government employment. One student even opined “Our parents expect that we enter into professions in the Government sector only.“ In the course of our interactions, we also observed that job roles associated with the aviation and hospitality industries were unheard of and any attempt to divert one's attention away from the Government sector was met with stiff opposition from parents and elders.

Fast forward to 2024 and we have one of our own girls who has taken to the skies, literally. Her name is Soun, daughter of Shri Aimong and Smti. Chongliu of Noklak Village. After completing her higher secondary schooling from GHSS Noklak, Soun Graduated from C-edge College, Dimapur. Determined to make a mark for herself, she applied for the job of a flight attendant after coming across an ad. As destiny would have it, the walk-in interview at Dimapur turned out to be her golden ticket to the life she had always dreamed of. Lady luck shone on our bright girl as she was selected for the post and was called for undergoing the mandatory three months’ training. Thereafter, she started working full-time in December of 2023. When asked what motivated her to become a flight attendant, Soun recalls being influenced by her school teachers. “As a young student, I remember being inspired by my teachers who always looked well put together. Watching them do well in their own lives inspired me to become independent myself.”

“The reason I chose to make a career in this industry is because I have always been so fascinated by the work that flight attendants do. As an air hostess I get the opportunity to travel to different parts of the country and learn different cultures. In addition to fulfilling all my dreams, I am also able to support my family financially”, she adds.

Recollecting her childhood days in Noklak, Soun says her parents could never afford to take them on vacations even if it meant travelling to another town within the state. Having such reckonings early on in life engrained in her a strong will that helped turn adversity into advantage. Hers is a story of how with sheer determination an individual can defy life’s odds to transform hardship into resilience. Now that her dream has come true, she says “I am able to travel the world and take care of my family at the same time. Looking back, it was never really easy to begin with. I did not know whom to approach for career advice and was often left to the mercy of my own fate. The other struggle was obtaining financial support to meet expenses associated with trainings and cost of living. In my journey of becoming a flight attendant, I have had to listen to many naysayers too but I have never allowed their words to weaken my resolute.”

Soun is currently based in Hyderabad and works for Indigo, one of India’s most reliable and trusted airlines. Her advice to those wishing to join the aviation industry : “No matter what the challenges might be, your willingness and determination to achieve your desired goal is all that matters. The rest will happen on its own.” We couldn’t agree more.

Wishing our dear girl all the success she deserves and more!

TS BEAUTY SALON: Where passion meets commitment

The year is 2010. A young girl sits in front of the TV watching fashion shows and is blown away by all the grooming that takes place on screen. The skill displayed by the styling experts captivates her and she finds herself drawn into a world where everybody looks their best. “Don’t watch these fashion shows, they are not going to help you in any way” her brothers would chide her. But the young girl already knew what the future held for her. That is exactly how the passion for beauty and wellness found its home in the heart of Tsutin who today runs her own salon named TS Beauty Salon. Opened to customers in June 2024, the salon is located adjacent Traffic Island in the heart of Noklak Town.

After clearing her Class IX examination, Tsutin pursued a three-month beauty & wellness course from Don Bosco Institute, Dimapur. Thereafter, she went on to complete another six months’ course at Emergence Institute, also located in Dimapur. On an average, Tsutin caters to around ten customers a day. From eyebrow threading to facials and hair straightening, her salon offers a variety of services to women of all ages. She also offers bridal makeup and treatments for brides-to-be. She says she is fully satisfied now that she has achieved her long cherished dream. Tsutin was also one of the trainees at the makeup course organised by District Administration Noklak as part of our Beti Bachao Beti Padhao campaign in collaboration with Miraculum Society in 2023. She says the training helped her develop new skills and has been a helpful experience.

Through our interaction, it was evident that from a young age Tsutin was confident about what she wanted to become. It was this determination that saw her through moments when her dream seemed distant and adversity seemed to knock at her door. “My parents were supportive but they did not have the financial means to help me procure equipments and other machinery needed to open a salon. So I knew I had to make my own money and that is how I started offering home services in Dimapur back in 2019. Then, in 2022 I moved to Noklak and ever since, I have been steadily building my clientele who continue to support my business till date.” In the first month since opening her salon, she has earned approximately 35,000/- rupees and says the response has been very favourable so far. “I had been waiting for an opportunity to establish my own salon but due to non availability of a convenient space I had to resort to home service. Now I am happy to finally be able to live my dream.” says the 27 year old.

District Administration wishes Tsutin the very best!

OLD IS GOLD

As public servants, our job entails meeting and interacting with people of all ages. While most of our tours are official in nature we try our best to make use of these opportunities to learn more about our people. Last year when we were in Kingniu we visited the homes of octogenarians Shri Thangpong and Smti. Chongtie who are considered to be the oldest man and oldest woman in the village, respectively. During our recent trip, we went to see them again. It was such a lovely reunion with these two souls who are still so full of smiles and laughter.

Sitting across them and watching them convey their gratitude for the surprise visit, we couldn’t help but come to terms with the fact that they are the last generation to have lived the simple, unadulterated life we can only dream of. With wonder in their eyes they marvel at the sound of our camera’s shutter and chuckle with delight as we show them the result on our phone-screen. Interestingly, for many of them the village is the only home they have ever known. The need to move out in search of greener pastures never arose because everything they needed, the land provided. Truth be told, there is so much wisdom to be gained from our grand old men and women for they are the stalwarts of our rich oral tradition, the guardians of our customs and the keepers of our history. In a world driven by consumerism and materialistic ideals, may we find the grace every now and then to sit with our gray-haired friends and listen to stories that the lines on their faces have to tell.

Grandma Chongtie who is such a sweetheart blessed us with her kind words and our Grandpa here gifted us the baskets (third slide) he had made as parting gifts. It is encounters like this that leave a lasting impression on us. It makes us ask ourselves some very crucial questions about life and how to make do with the best of our ability the time that is given to us.
