Launched in 1797, the USS Constitution, better known as “Old Ironsides,” is the oldest commissioned warship still afloat. Maintaining the vessel requires the same type of massive white oak timbers used in its original construction.

To ensure a future supply, the U.S. Navy manages dedicated forests that produce ship grade oak, allowing authentic repairs to continue for generations. The program is a unique blend of historic preservation, long term planning, and sustainable forestry.

The smallpox vaccine used a bifurcated needle to place live vaccinia virus into the skin through a series of small punctures. The vaccination site usually formed a blister, then a scab, and often healed with a permanent circular scar.

Because it used a live virus, the reaction was much more visible than most modern vaccines. The vaccine played a key role in the global campaign that eradicated Smallpox, which the World Health Organization officially declared eliminated in 1980.

In May 1921, the U.S. Navy submarine USS R-14 (SS-91) was sent on a search mission near Hawaii to find the missing tug USS Conestoga when it became stranded at sea after fuel contamination disabled its diesel engines.

With limited supplies and no radio contact, the crew improvised sails from hammocks and blankets and used their submarine’s structure to catch wind and drift back toward land. After several days, they successfully reached port in a rare example of a modern warship being sailed like an ancient vessel.

World War I was a strange blend of old and new warfare. Soldiers still fought with cavalry, bayonets, horse drawn wagons, and messenger pigeons, while also encountering tanks, aircraft, submarines, radios, and machine guns.

Armies often used 19th century tactics alongside cutting edge technology, creating a conflict that bridged two eras and transformed the future of warfare.

The kamikaze strike on HMS Sussex in July 1945 came during the final desperate months of World War II in the Pacific. By then, Japan was relying heavily on kamikaze attacks carried out by often very young pilots on one way missions.

When the aircraft hit Sussex, the impact left a striking outline of the plane pressed into the ship’s steel hull before the aircraft disintegrated. The cruiser survived, but the imprint became a haunting reminder of the desperation, sacrifice, and violence that defined the final stage of the war.
