Dear Sri Arvind Kejrival,
I am one of those who appreciate your Gandhian ideals, your concern for the common man, and your party's success in Delhi. I have heard that you have serious health problems that may come in the way of achieving your goals of giving a good pro-people administration in Delhi. I believe that your success in Delhi will be good not only for the whole of India but probaly for the whole world.
I am a scientist, 86 years old, and in my younger years had serious health problems such as asthma, arthritis, migraine head-ache, hyperacidity and diabetes. To find a solution to these problems, I studied extensively, all the scientific research on the nutritional and other causes, and solutions for preventing and curing these diseases which are now considered to be lifestyle diseases. Based on these researches, I have altered my lifestyle and have successfully cured or controlled all my health problems without taking any medicines. Now at 86 years, I am healthier and am more energetic than I was at forty years of age.
I have published several books on the subject in Kannada and one in English. I had sent you a copy of the English book ('Holistic lifestyle for Healing), through Sri Yogendra Yadav in May, 2015). I realize that you may not have much time to read the book and so am sending you a summary of the book that may be of help to solve your health problems.
I have included below the dietary guidelines for treating diabetes, that I had prepared for a friend. This provides you information on the basic diet that is good for treating all diseases. At the end of the letter I have given you specific information on treating Asthma.
The Healing Diet:
This is a healing diet that supplies all nutrients needed for the most efficient functioning of various organs of the human body. It consists of the foods that were consumed by humans during millions of years of evolution from their monkey-like ancestors. These are the foods that monkeys consume even to this day and maintain excellent health until their environment is radically changed by human activities. Various organs of the human body are designed by nature to digest and utilize these foods. They contain adequate amounts of all the essential nutrients needed for preventing or healing most diseases such as diabetes, high blood pressure, heart disease, asthma, arthritis and cancer. Many of these essential nutrients are completely or partially destroyed, when the foods are altered by processes such as polishing rice and discarding rice bran, grinding and discarding nutritionally rich wheat bran, or extracting oil from groundnut, sesame, almonds etc. and discarding nutritionally rich oil cakes, and by the process of cooking.
1. The healing diet consists of fruits, vegetables, oilseeds such as groundnut, almonds, walnuts, pistachios or sesame which supply excellent protein (25%), heart-healthy fats (30-40%), lots of fiber that slows down absorption of sugar in diabetics, plenty of vitamin E and many anti-oxidants that help prevent premature ageing, heart attacks, arthritis, cancer and many other diseases. Please note that all these are vegetarian foods. For treating any serious health problems, it is best to avoid or greatly restrict all animal foods including meat, milk products and eggs. Although many studies indicate that fishes are very good for preventing heart diseases and some other health problems, many scientists are now suggesting that we avoid even fish, because most fish in nature are severely contaminated with environmental poisons such as mercury, lead, arsenic and agricultural and industrial chemicals.
2. Ideally it is better to consume these vegetarian foods in each meal, starting with small amounts such as 5-10 almonds or 3-4 pieces of walnuts or 15-20 groundnuts per meal. These nuts should be soaked in water for 3-5 hours, soaking water discarded and then eaten with a small banana, orange, apple or mosimbi, or just half a cup of papaya , melon or mango slices per meal. The fruits and soaked nuts may be eaten directly with the vegetables mentioned below, or ground with a few thoroughly washed curry leaves, pealed carrots, tomatoes , etc. and eaten in the form of a soup. This is the basic healing diet. Gradually increase the quantities of nuts eaten to 10-15 almonds (30-40 grams per day) or 5-6 pieces of walnut (15-20 grams per day) or 30-40 groundnuts per meal (30-40 grams per day).
3. You may add to these basic healing foods, cooked vegetables and soaked or sprouted seeds. Ideally to prevent pesticide poisoning, use only the vegetables, that can be peeled off to remove pesticides, such as cucumbers, carrots, ridge-gourd, knol-khol, ash-gourd, ridge gourd, bottle-gourd, pumpkin etc. Avoid green beans, cluster-beans, greens etc., bought in the market, that cannot be peeled off. These vegetables are okay if they are organically grown. Diabetics may consume a mixture of these vegetables in large amounts (one 250 ml cup full per meal) as they are low glycemic foods that do not greatly increase blood sugar levels. However, please do not eat a cup full of only carrots or radishes as they increase blood sugar but eating one medium sized carrot or radish per meal is okay.
4. If for some reason you cannot eat nuts, you may take 15-20 grams of seeds such as green-gram (mung-bean), bengal- gram(chana) etc. soaked in water for 4-5 hours, drain the water off, cook them without salt and sprinkle small amounts of salt just before eating. Or you may sprout these seeds by soaking in water for 4-5 hours, drain off the water and keep them in a wet cloth for one or two nights. You may wash these sprouts thoroughly and consume them raw or cook them. When you consume these seeds, to supply the needed fat that these seeds cannot supply, take 15-20 ml of ground-nut oil or coconut oil, olive oil or canola oil per day. If you eat nuts, they supply all the fat that the body needs and additional oils are not needed. These are nutritionally the best vegetable oils
5. Finally, depending on the level of your physical activity, add one or two chapathis of about 6 inches in diameter or a ball of cooked rice or ragi about two inches in diameter. Check your blood sugar two hours after the meal and if the sugar is higher than 140 mg, reduce the number of chapathis or rice to the correct level to bring the blood sugar level down to less than 140 mg. Patients who are seriously ill should of course follow the diet under the supervision of their physician who will increase or decrease the needed medication depending on the levels of blood sugar.
Caution: Glucometers may give you higher readings than is actual. Take your glucometer to a lab and check your blood sugar with the same blood that the lab technician uses. Compare the two results to know how accurate your meter is. Also, when you reduce the number of chapattis or the amount of rice you take, it is important to cut down your insulin dosage or other anti-diabetic drugs correspondingly. Otherwise you will go into hypoglycemic shock.
After you follow the above diet for 6 weeks, try out your favorite foods such as one or two small idlies or dosas, two inch diameter balls of uppittu, small amounts of sweets, fried foods etc. one by one and check their effect on blood sugar, arthritis or your other disease symptoms. If any of these added foods aggravates symptoms of any disease, give up such foods temporarily until further tests confirm that they aggravate symptoms of your disease. It is extremely important that you keep a record of all these experiments so that you can develop a healing diet that is suited to you. Make sure that the total quantity of carbohydrates that you consume per day remains more or less constant. If you go off the diet in a moderate way, once in a while , even once a week, it may not affect your health adversely. Only you can work out the best diet for yourself over a period of time.
Specific information for treating Asthma and other respiratory disorders:
1. For treating Asthma or other respiratory illnesses, stick to the vegetarian diet described above as far as possible. It is extremely important to avoid all milk and milk products, because several scientific studies have indicated that most asthmatic people are allergic to cow's milk and milk products.
2. Eat all the basic healing foods mentioned above, but it is not necessary to restrict the amount of chapathis, rice and other carbohydrate rich foods for trating asthma.
3. Avoid all fried foods, bakery products, soft drinks, and preparations containing white sugar. After you follow this and get relief from Asthma, you may try small quatities of gur (jaggery) and observe whether it suits you.
4. Avoid palm oil, sunflower oil, ghee etc.
5. Even among fruits and vegetables, observe carefully whether any of them aggravate your health problem and avoid them. For example, bananas and pomogrenates aggravate asthma in some people.
I wish you all the best and pray God for your success in improving your health and seeving the people of Delhi.
Lastly, I request you to take all security precautions to protect yourself from potential killers. I know you believe that God will protect you and that security precautions are not important. But please remember Gandhiji also believed that God will protect him. I believe he was killed because God expected him and expects all of us, to take care of ourselves to the best of our ability and only when we do ouir duty, He may help us.
