Nelson Mandela, the civil rights leader who rose from a small village in rural, apartheid-era South Africa to become the country's first black President, died on Thursday at age 95. Mandela's election in 1994 ended three centuries of European domination of indigenous African people of the region.

Mandela, pictured here in 2006, had been released from prison in 1990 after serving 27 years for his attempts to overthrow the white minority government in the 1960s. He won the Nobel Peace Prize and other honors for his leadership of the peaceful transition to democracy in South Africa.

When Mandela arrived at the Cape Town City Hall after his release, a crowd of 50,000 supporters had assembled to hear his first words in public in over a quarter century. "Our struggle has reached a decisive moment," he said, in an event broadcast around the world. "Our march to freedom is irreversible."

The lawyer and anti-apartheid activist had been convicted of treason and sabotage in June 1964 and sentenced to life imprisonment. He spent most of his sentence on Robben Island, off Cape Town, doing hard labor. During the 1980s he refused many offers for early release from the government because of the conditions attached.

But on February 2, 1990, South African President F. W. de Klerk reversed the ban on the African National Congress (ANC) and other anti-apartheid organizations, announcing that Mandela would be released. It was the beginning of the opening up of apartheid-era South Africa, in which blacks faced severe discrimination.

In the first national elections in which blacks had the right to vote, the ANC won and Mandela became President. He remained in that office until 1999.

Tazkiyah (purification) and austerity is the process of being so full and tranquil on the inside with love for Allah (swt) that you don’t care what worldly good you have or do not have. When difficulty afflicts you, it feels like a breeze on your skin, it doesn’t shake you.

Koreans missionaries eyeing Valley?
In yet another revelation, head of Darul-Uloom Rahemiya Bandipore, Moulana Rehmatullah Mir Qasimi said that the Christian Missionaries were subjecting the children to forced labour and were denying them food , if they talk anything about Islam.
Moulvi Rehmatullah said that various South Korean Christian missionaries have established their Orphanages in various parts of valley and are imparting lessons regarding Christianity to the children, especially of the age ranging from 5 to 15 years.
He said that they were offering free education to the orphans and children from poor families and then forcing them to follow the practices of Christianity.
“They (Christian Missionaries) have formed their trusts and hostels all over and mostly children of age four to five years are staying there. Every day, the children are being taught bible and are made to wash utensils. Even if a child talks about Islam, he is not being given food. A child was not given food for two days after he was found having surma in his eyes,”Maulvi Rehmatullah said.
He said that the missionaries were touring every village and district where they were adopting different strategies to lure the people to accept Christianity through various incentives.
Mualana said that the missionaries have learnt the local dialect to reach wide section of people to propagate their teachings.
“Recently we have received several complaints from Nowgam area that the missionaries were irritating the people and instigating them to turn to violent means just to show outsiders that Muslims are not good in their behavior. We even heard that the missionaries were saying people that ‘tumhara Quraan jhoota hain. It is their policy to trap the Muslim community and to make their slaves , ”he said.
He further said that the Korean missionaries have set up their strong network in Valley universities especially Kashmir University and Islamic University Awantipora.
“We have asked many officials at Kashmir University that a strong network was getting developed in the campus where the youth are being lured by the missionaries and offered many incentives to say bad about Islam,”Maulana Qasimi.
The Darul-Uloom Rahemiya head said that a website named ‘Agape Kashmir’ has been developed exclusively for Kashmir where the Christian missionaries have mentioned about their objectives and number of conversion that had done over these years.
He said that the network is also active on various social networking sites where they are interacting with the Kashmiri youth and propagating Christianity to them.
Maulan Qasmi said that the mushrooming of NGO’s in the valley was one of the prime reason that many people in rural and urban Kashmir have got lured to these missionaries.
However to combat the same, he said that they have established over 300 Maqatib (Islamic schools) all over the state where the children are being made aware about Islamic teachings including Quraan, Hadith .
“Over last few years, we have been touring to various areas of valley to establish our Mataqib where we are spreading awareness among the people regarding the active missionaries organisation in their respective areas apart from educating them about Islamic teaching, “he said.
Mulana Qasimi urged the people to keep a vigil eye on their children and impart them with the teachings of Islam.
“We are not fully aware about Islam and we request the whole Muslim community to send their children to Maqtabs in their vicinity where from they can get to know about Islam,” he said.
