तमिळनाडूचे मुख्यमंत्री विजय थलपती यांनी महिलांवरील अत्याचाराच्या घटनांबाबत कठोर भूमिका घेतली आहे. त्यांनी नमूद केल्यानुसार, "मुलगी १० वर्षांची असो वा २५ वर्षांची, ती तामिळनाडूतील असो वा देशातील इतर कोणत्याही राज्यातील, बलात्काराच्या दोषीला २४ तासांच्या आत फाशीची शिक्षा देण्यात यावी." त्यांच्या या विधानामुळे सोशल मीडियावर चर्चा सुरू झाली असून अनेकांनी महिलांच्या सुरक्षेसाठी कठोर कायदे आणि जलद न्यायव्यवस्थेची आवश्यकता प्रतिपादित केली आहे. हे विधान त्यांच्या वैयक्तिक भूमिकेचे प्रतिनिधित्व करते. सध्याच्या भारतीय कायद्यानुसार, बलात्काराच्या प्रकरणांमध्ये न्यायालयीन प्रक्रिया पूर्ण झाल्यानंतरच शिक्षा दिली जाते; २४ तासांच्या आत फाशीची शिक्षा अशी कोणतीही कायदेशीर तरतूद नाही.
