Green Initiative at RKMV Shimla

The project ‘Waste to Wealth’ (Session 2025-26), was successfully carried out by the Department of Environment Science under the guidance of the Principal Dr. Anurita Saxena, focusing on the production of high-quality decompost from biodegradable waste.

The main objective of this project was to promote sustainable waste management practices and create awareness about converting biodegradable waste into useful resources.

By diverting canteen kitchen waste into specialized vermicomposting pits, the team produced 300 kg of "Black Gold" (nutrient-rich organic compost). The project not only helped in reducing waste generated in campus but also resulted in the production of eco-friendly manure. The prepared decompost was was eagerly purchased by staff members for their personal kitchen gardens, bringing the spirit of sustainability into their homes. This initiative proved that "waste" is a resource, generating ₹6,000 for the college (sold at ₹20/kg).

This initiative served as an excellent example of environmental responsibility and motivated students to adopt eco-friendly habits. The project strengthened the message of cleanliness, recycling, and sustainability, making the campus greener and more environmentally conscious.
