ASSAM–MEGHALAYA JOINT MEETING | 22 AUGUST 2026
A joint meeting between the Governments of Assam and Meghalaya was held at Koinadhara State Guest House to review developments following the incident in Shillong on 19 August 2026.
The meeting was led by Hon’ble Deputy Chief Minister of Meghalaya, Dr. S. Dhar, and Hon’ble Minister, Government of Assam, Shri Atul Bora, along with senior officers of both States.
Key Outcomes
🔹 Strong legal action: 15 FIRs have been registered. The President, Vice-President and General Secretary of KSU have been arrested under the Meghalaya Maintenance of Public Order Act.
🔹 SIT constituted: Five masked persons have been identified, particularly in connection with attacks on Assam-registered vehicles. A Special Investigation Team has been constituted for further investigation and prosecution.
🔹 Safe transit: More than 3,770 Assam-registered vehicles have been safely escorted from Meghalaya into Assam.
🔹 Evacuation within 48 hours: All remaining stranded passengers and vehicles will be safely escorted to Assam within the next 48 hours.
🔹 Dedicated coordination & helplines: A dedicated coordination mechanism between the IG, Special Branch, Assam and IG, Law & Order, Meghalaya, along with dedicated helplines and an online support forum, will assist in locating and facilitating stranded individuals.

🔹 Inter-State coordination: Permanent joint committees involving officials from Nongpoh and Kamrup Metropolitan will address day-to-day inter-State border issues.
🔹 Tourist safety: Both Governments reaffirmed their commitment to the safe and secure movement of tourists, passengers and vehicles between Assam and Meghalaya.
