Directorate of Horticulture The Directorate of Horticulture was bifurcated from the Department of Agriculture during the year 20

Vision of the Department:
To promote holistic, sustained and equitable intervention for attaining food security; conservation, management, protection and sustainable use of natural resources for improved livelihood; generating gainful rural employment opportunities to alleviate poverty and striving towards an overall balanced economic development of the farming community. Goals of the Department:
•Attaining Food Security and Sustainable Growth by increasing production of food grains and improving productivity.
•Augment Farmer’s Income through growing of suitable horticultural crops
•Promote Commercial Agriculture through low volume high value crops
•Creation of need based Marketing Infrastructure including institutional support and supporting facilities
•Popularise Participatory Approach to agriculture management through watershed programmes and Self Help Groups at village level.

The first consignment of Khasi Mandarin has been sent this season to Star Bazaar- each consignment weighing 500 kg each were sent to Bangalore and Mumbai. These shipment were routed through Narwan IVCS. The mandarins oranges were also treated with edible wax by the newly set-up waxing machine; packed in boxes, and transported by flight to both locations.
Star Bazaar has displayed the Khasi Mandarin oranges in their outlets and also conducted sensory testing for customers to promote naturally grown mandarins.

Department of Agriculture, Meghalaya Shines at the SKOCH Awards with Gold honours showcasing excellence in innovation and inclusive development.

The Gold Award was awarded to the Mushroom Development Centre, Upper Shillong, for its outstanding work as a Shiitake Production and Training Centre, which was established with the technical assistance from Japan.
