Three Students Expelled From Famous Scindia School Over Grave Ragging
Reported by Siddharth Ranjan Das, Edited by Mala Das | Updated: August 26, 2014 16:46 IST

A Bihar minister's son was allegedly ragged in Gwalior's Scindia school

Gwalior: Three students of the famous Scindia School in Gwalior have been expelled after they allegedly ragged a junior who is now in hospital in critical condition. In a statement, the school described the expulsion of the students as "in line with its zero tolerance policy towards indiscipline."

On Wednesday, the 14-year-old son of a Bihar minister was found unconscious in his room and was rushed to a local hospital before being taken to Delhi, accompanied by two school teachers.

His father has refuted allegations that the teen tried to commit su***de; he claims that the child was strangled by seniors who had been harassing him for weeks. But the police say they have recovered a bed sheet and a ceiling fan that the teen tried to use in his alleged attempted su***de.

"After recording the statements of the three senior boys belonging to influential families, we found out that the teen attempted su***de as the trio used to harass him by asking him to do menial jobs," said Mohammad Yusuf Qureshi, a senior police officer handling the case. He said the senior students also beat up the boy.

The local police registered FIRs or First Information Reports this morning against the students who were later expelled; two members of the staff, including a House Master, were charged with negligence. They have been "debarred from their duties," the school said.

This Woman Killed a Leopard With Her Bare Hands
Reported by Tania Saili Bakshi, Edited by Anindita Sanyal | Updated: August 26, 2014 09:38 IST

Reset
Dehradun: Killing a big cat with bare hands had so far been the domain of Africa's Masai warriors. But an elderly woman in an Uttarakhand village - 56-year-old Kamla -- has equalled the feat.

On the wee hours of Sunday, when Kamla was tilling her fields, a leopard attacked her.

The leopard population in Uttarakhand's Garhwal region is growing, and man-animal conflicts are becoming more and more a norm.

As she shouted for help, Kamla fought back. All she had were a few puny farming tools. By the time the villagers arrived to rescue her, she had been grievously injured. And the leopard -- dead.

Almost 48 hours on, Kamla is in hospital, in a critical condition, fighting for her life.

But she is well on her way to becoming the subject of local folklore.

Unbelievable Goodies in Camel's Milk
Shivangana Vasudeva, NDTV | Updated: August 23, 2014 15:32 IST

Reset
When someone first mentioned camel milk to me, I thought they were joking. I asked myself, "Why would anyone want to consume a drink from an animal that lives in a parched dessert." This was much before I woke up to the fact that it is now being considered as the newest health tonic.

Ages ago, bedouin and nomad cultures are known to have survived solely on camel milk for days. As a matter of fact, Pakistani and Afghani camels are believed to produce the highest yields. While Middle East brims with camel dairies, the Food Safety and Standards Authority (FSSAI) has not yet legalized its sale in India. But, the camel-rearing Rebari community in Rajasthan has been milking and consuming a substantial quantity for long.

What's so super about it?

When you scan through the long list of benefits, you are likely to get tempted to take the plunge.

• 3 times more Vitamin C than cow's milk and 10 times higher in iron
• Lower cholesterol than cow or goat's milk
• High unsaturated fatty acids and Vitamin B
• Lower in lactose than cow's milk (great alternative for those with lactose intolerance)
• Low in fat and light on the stomach
• High mineral and immunoglobulin content. Immunoglobulin is an anti-body used by the immune system to identify and neutralize bacteria and viruses.

Does it help with diabetes and autism?

Camel milk packs a bunch of qualities and wears the healthy halo comfortably. A previous study published in the Journal Evidence-Based Complementary and Alternative Medicine; found that 25 autistic children who consumed camel milk had lower levels of oxidative stress, which plays an important role in several neurological disorders. The children also showed a significant improvement in their behavior which goes to prove camel's milks ther**eutic benefits. The anti-inflammatory properties are known to improve the brain function.

As far as diabetes is concerned, camel milk is known to be a great source of an insulin-like protein that easily passes through the stomach without being destroyed. A study done by India's Bikaner Diabetes Care Research Center examined the effects of camel milk on type 1 diabetics. The participants consumed 500ml of fresh camel milk daily. The study concluded that it significantly reduced the insulin dosage required to regulate the blood sugar levels in the body. In fact, the Rebari community in Rajasthan has been using camel milk for several years to treat diabetes and even malaria.

How does it taste?

It has a slight salty undertone with an earthy taste. It is very refreshing and lighter than cow's milk. Sometimes it may be a bit watery. But here's the catch - it is best served fresh and raw.

The concept of alternate milk beverages is slowly making newer varieties slip into our refrigerators. But, since most of these may give your wallet a good workout one should be cautious before lapping up a new trend.

New Delhi: A teenaged girl was allegedly gang-r***d at gunpoint by five people known to her in a west Delhi house, police said on Tuesday.

The victim, a resident of Uttam Nagar and a class X student, was taken to a house in west Delhi a week ago by the accused -- all of whom are known to her -- when she was going to school and r***d in turns, police said.

Of the five accused, three are minors.

In her complaint, the victim told the police that one of the accused was carrying a pistol and threatened her with dire consequences if she disclosed the incident to anyone.

She added the accused also recorded the incident on a mobile phone.

Incidentally, the police have not yet found the gun.

The victim's parents got to know about the incident, a week after it took place, when she complained of uneasiness and was taken to a hospital.

"Two minors have been apprehended while a 20-year-old accused was arrested from their respective houses after the girl's parents approached the police. The hunt for the other two accused, who are on the run, is on," a police official said.

He added that the police are verifying all the allegations.

Bangalore: While hundreds of angry and worried parents took to the streets of Bangalore on Saturday to demand a speedy investigation into the alleged r**e of a six-year-old inside an elite school, a few women in the city are now taking the online route to be heard.

Since the incident came to light, more mothers have begun speaking out about how in the past too, schools have tried to hush up r**e cases.

There has been a strong response to at least two online petitions that calls on the chief minister to frame a time bound road map to ensure safety for women in the city.

On July 2, a six-year-old first grade student was allegedly r***d by two gym instructors at the Vibgyor High School in the city.

As a "punishment" for misbehaving, she was reportedly asked to leave her class and stay in an empty room used for storing gym equipment. She was allegedly assaulted there.

Her mother found out about the assault seven days later, when a private nursing home hinted that the child could have been r***d.

Though three people have been detained by the police, no arrest has been made yet.

Don't Wash Chicken Before Cooking it, Warns Food Standards Agency
Rebecca Smithers, consumer affairs correspondent, guardian.co.uk | Updated: June 17, 2014 12:48 IST

Bacteria which are responsible for most food poisoning is spread by splashes and droplets of water caused during cleaning

The government's food watchdog has urged consumers to stop washing chicken before they cook it to avoid contaminating their kitchen with Campylobacter - the most common type of food poisoning in the UK - which can cause death as well as serious health problems.

Research for the Food Standards Agency reveals that more than two-fifths of cooks say they routinely wash chicken as part of their food preparations. But the FSA has warned that splashed water droplets can spread Campylobacter bacteria on to human skin, work surfaces, clothing and cooking equipment.

Campylobacter is responsible for most cases of food poisoning, with around 280,000 people affected in the UK each year, and four out of five cases are caused by contaminated chicken. "While most cases result in people suffering from abdominal pain, severe diarrhoea and vomiting, some cases can lead to more significant health problems," the Food Standards Agency said.

In more serious situations, it can lead to irritable bowel syndrome, reactive arthritis and Guillain-Barré syndrome, a serious condition of the nervous system. At its worst, it can kill. Those most at risk are children under five and older people. The campaign is part of Food Safety Week.

FSA chief executive Catherine Brown said: "Although people tend to follow recommended practice when handling poultry, such as washing hands after touching raw chicken and making sure it is thoroughly cooked, our research has found that washing raw chicken is also common practice,. That's why we're calling on people to stop washing raw chicken and also raising awareness of the risks of contracting Campylobacter as a result of cross-contamination."

She said Campylobacter was "a serious issue. Not only can it cause severe illness and death, but it costs the economy hundreds of millions of pounds a year as a result of sickness absence and the burden on the NHS."

Chicken: defrost it, but don't wash it.
