The Director, NIH, chaired the 25th RCC Meeting of the CFMS NIH Patna, in hybrid mode on 2 June 2026 at Water Resources Department (WRD), Ranchi. The meeting was attended by representatives from various State agencies, including WRD Bihar, WRD Jharkhand, and the Department of Soil Conservation; Central organizations such as Central Water Commission CWC, NWDA, CPCB, CGWB, GFCC, and National Remote Sensing Centre (NRSC), as well as academic institutions including Indian Institute of Technology, National Institute of Technology Patna and Central University of Jharkhand.

An Open Call for Startups and MSMEs under the BHARAT-WIN Portal was launched during the one-day workshop on “R&D in Water”, organized by the Department of Water Resources, River Development & Ganga Rejuvenation (DoWR, RD&GR), Ministry of Jal Shakti. The initiative aims to support the development of innovative products, prototypes, and solutions in the water sector. The National Institute of Hydrology (NIH), Roorkee, is the Project Implementation Agency for this Open Call.

The workshop was jointly inaugurated by Shri C.R. Patil, Hon’ble Union Minister of Jal Shakti; Dr. Jitendra Singh, Hon’ble Minister of State (Independent Charge) for Science & Technology; Shri Raj Bhushan Choudhary, Hon’ble Minister of State, Ministry of Jal Shakti; Dr. V. Narayanan, Secretary, Department of Space and Chairman, ISRO; Secretaries of DST, DoDWS, and DoWR, RD&GR; the Additional Secretary & Mission Director, National Water Mission; the CEO, ANRF; and other senior officials.

During the workshop, NIH showcased the impact and contributions of its research activities undertaken over the past decade towards advancing water resources management and hydrological sciences in the country.

🚨 Live from NIH Roorkee: Empowering the Next Generation of Water Experts! 🌊

We are thrilled to announce the successful inauguration of the 9th edition of our signature 6-day training course: “Future-Ready Waters: Mastering SWAT Modeling for Climate-Resilient Water Management.”

Organized by the National Institute of Hydrology (NIH), this intensive program brings together a dynamic cohort of students, research scholars, technical and scientific staff from central and state governments, and water resource professionals. Over the next week, they will deep-dive into cutting-edge SWAT modeling tools essential for tackling modern climate challenges.

💡 Inauguration Highlights: The course was officially inaugurated on May 25, 2026, at the NIH Roorkee Society Hall by our honorable Director, Dr. Y. Ramji Satyaji Rao, who shared inspiring remarks on the critical role of climate-resilient water management.

The inaugural session was further elevated by the presence of our esteemed divisional heads and senior scientists, including Dr. A R Senthil Kumar (Head-WRSD), Dr. Suhas Khobragade (Head-HID), Dr. Mukesh Sharma (Head-EHD)
Dr. Soban Singh Rawat (Sci.-F & Hindi Officer), along with the institute's dedicated scientific community.

On 26th May 2026, the Director of the National Institute of Hydrology (NIH) chaired the 21st Regional Coordination Committee (RCC) meeting of NIH NERC, Guwahati. Held in hybrid mode, the meeting focused on strengthening collaborative efforts for water resource management and hydrological research in the North Eastern region.

We thank the esteemed members from various domains for their valuable participation and insights:

• State Agencies: Water Resources Departments (WRD) of Nagaland, Meghalaya, Arunachal Pradesh, Manipur, and Assam; DST Sikkim; and Irrigation Assam.
• Central Agencies: CWC, Brahmaputra Board, GSI, CGWB, NERIWALM, and NEHARI.
• Academia: IIT Guwahati and Manipur University.

Together, we look forward to advancing sustainable water solutions for the region.

Dr. Riyaz Ahmad Mir, Scientist-In-Charge (NIH-WHRC Jammu) participated in the National Inception Workshop on the “National GLOF Risk Mitigation Programme (NGRMP)”, held on 22 May 2026 at IIPA Bhawan, ITO, New Delhi, organized by the National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA), India.
The workshop provided an important platform for deliberations on Glacial Lake Outburst Flood (GLOF) risk management in the Indian Himalayan Region, bringing together policymakers, scientists, technical institutions, academia, disaster management professionals, and representatives from Himalayan States/UTs. Key discussions centered on hazard and risk assessment, monitoring technologies, early warning systems, site-specific mitigation strategies, institutional coordination, and community resilience amid escalating climate-induced risks. The programme featured focused technical sessions on:
• Hazard and risk assessment approaches
• Monitoring and early warning systems
• Site-specific mitigation measures
• Community awareness and institutional mechanisms
• State/UT implementation progress under NGRMP
Dr. Mir shared perspectives from his ongoing research and recent publications, contributing to discussions on advancing GLOF risk reduction through integrated science–policy approaches. He acknowledged the collective efforts of colleagues, collaborators, and research teams whose dedication enabled meaningful exchange of findings. While strengthening resilience and preparedness across vulnerable Himalayan regions remains a long-term endeavour, such collaborative initiatives mark a significant step forward. Dr. Mir expressed gratitude to NDMA and all participating institutions for the enriching platform and constructive deliberations.

Dr. Rajesh Singh, Scientist E, National Institute of Hydrology (NIH), Roorkee, participated as a Panelist in the workshop on “Sustainability and Circularity of Water and Wastewater Management in Rural and Peri-Urban Areas” organized at the India Habitat Centre, New Delhi.

The workshop served as an important platform for deliberations on sustainable water management, source sustainability, recharge strategies, and greywater management solutions for rural and peri-urban regions.

The event was attended by several distinguished dignitaries, including Shri Ashok K. K. Meena (IAS), Secretary, Department of Drinking Water and Sanitation, Ministry of Jal Shakti; Shri Yugal Kishore Joshi, Programme Director, NITI Aayog; Ms. Sunita Narain, Director General, Centre for Science and Environment (CSE); along with senior representatives from NITI Aayog, Central Ground Water Board, World Bank, Tata Trusts, and other leading organizations.

On May 16, 2026, the National Institute of Hydrology (NIH) had the distinct honor of hosting Shri Sriram Taranikanti, IAS (Tripura: 1992), Director of the Lal Bahadur Shastri National Academy of Administration (LBSNAA), Mussoorie, at our Nuclear Hydrology Laboratory.

Shri Taranikanti was warmly received by Shri Y.S. Rao, Director, NIH. As part of the visit, Shri Gopal Krishan, Scientist E, provided a comprehensive briefing on the laboratory’s advanced instrumentation and their critical applications in isotope hydrology. The session highlighted key operational areas, including precise groundwater investigations, comprehensive water resource assessments, and advanced environmental tracing techniques.

The visit fostered highly productive discussions regarding the role of isotope techniques in addressing emerging water challenges and explored avenues for strengthening scientific capacity in hydrological research.
