On the occasion of Teachers’ Day, the International Centre of Excellence for Dams (ICED), IIT Roorkee, proudly congratulates Prof. Avlokita Agrawal, Department of Architecture and Planning, and Joint Faculty, ICED, on receiving the prestigious National Award to Teachers 2026 from the Hon’ble President of India, Smt. We were delighted to welcome Dr. Ken Watanabe and Dr. Makiko Lguchi to the International Centre of Excellence for Dams, IIT Roorkee (ICED) for an insightful discussion on Hydro-STIV technology and its applications.

The visit provided an opportunity for knowledge exchange on innovative approaches to measuring flow velocity and discharge using video images. The Hydro-STIV technology offers an interesting and non-contact approach to flow measurement.

💻 Expert Presentation:
Dr. Ichiro Fujita joined the online and delivered an insightful presentation on Hydro-STIV measurement software, explaining its principles, methodology, and application for estimating flow velocity and discharge from video images.

💬 Technical Discussion & Knowledge Exchange:
The session included engaging discussions with Prof. Narendra Goel, Founding Member of ICED, Mr. Santosh from IALS, along with Manohar Arora and Manmohan Goel. The discussions with Dr. Ken Watanabe and Dr. Makiko Iguchi focused on the practical applications of video-based flow measurement technologies.

Such interactions provide valuable opportunities to explore emerging technologies, exchange technical knowledge, and strengthen international collaboration.

The International Centre of Excellence for Dams (ICED), Indian Institute of Technology Roorkee, proudly participated in the SLMC Regional Review and Planning Workshop and Flood Forecasting on a Shoestring Budget (FFSB) Technical Workshop, held from 8–11 June 2026 at Pathum Thani, Thailand.

Organized by the Regional Integrated Multi-Hazard Early Warning System (RIMES), the four-day workshop brought together experts, researchers, and representatives from National Meteorological and Hydrological Services (NMHSs), disaster management agencies, and partner institutions across South and Southeast Asia. The event served as a platform to review regional progress, exchange technical knowledge, and strengthen collaboration in the fields of last-mile communication, flood forecasting, early warning systems, and disaster risk reduction.

Representing ICED, IIT Roorkee, Mr. Dhruv Singhal actively participated in the technical sessions and discussions, engaging with international experts on innovative and cost-effective approaches to flood forecasting, operational forecasting workflows.

The workshop highlighted the importance of regional cooperation, knowledge sharing, and data-driven decision-making to enhance forecasting capabilities and strengthen preparedness against hydro-meteorological hazards. It also emphasized practical, scalable solutions that can support operational flood forecasting and improve last-mile dissemination of early warning information.

Participation in this international event reflects ICED's continued commitment to advancing research, fostering global partnerships, and contributing to the development of innovative solutions for water resources management, flood forecasting.

Successfully concluded the 3-day short-term training programme on "Seismic Hazard Assessment and Seismic Analysis" (21st–23rd July 2026), organized by the International Centre of Excellence for Dams (ICED), Indian Institute of Technology, Roorkee , under the Ministry of Jal Shakti’s Dam Rehabilitation and Improvement Project (DRIP)! 🏛️🌐

The program, conducted in Hybrid Mode, brought together experts, researchers, and practicing engineers to dive deep into contemporary seismic hazard assessment, computational tools like Open-Quake, and dam safety regulations. The course was led by Prof. Mukat Sharma and Prof. Bikram Kesharee Patra

Advancing Dam Safety requires a strong connection between numerical modelling Engineering Practice and Industry Expertise

The International Centre of Excellence for Dams IIT Roorkee (ICED) was pleased to host members from Bentley Systems as part of the STTP on Finite Element Modelling and Seismic Analysis of Dams.

Their sessions on ADINA and PLAXIS brought valuable industry perspectives to the training program.

Mr. Biswatosh Purkayastha introduced participants to ADINA, while Mr. Debanjan Purkayastha discussed the application of PLAXIS in . Dr. Rajendra Bisht and Mr. Debanjan Purkayastha also supported the hands-on session on static and seismic analysis of embankment dams, making the training more practical and application-oriented.

The visit also provided an opportunity for a meaningful industry–institute interaction with Prof. Mukat Sharma, Prof Narendra Goel, Prof. B.R.K Pillai and Prof. Bikram Kesharee Patra on the role of advanced tools in dam safety and .

The International Centre of Excellence for Dams (ICED), IIT Roorkee, successfully concluded the Short-Term Training Programme on "Finite Element Modelling and Seismic Analysis of Dams", held from 29 June to 02 July 2026.

The four-day programme brought together professionals from dam-owning organizations, government agencies, academia, and industry to enhance their knowledge and practical skills in advanced numerical modelling and seismic analysis of dams. The training covered fundamental concepts, state-of-the-art methodologies, and hands-on sessions on finite element modelling, enabling participants to better understand the seismic behaviour and safety assessment of dam structures.

The programme featured expert lectures by distinguished faculty members and domain experts, fostering insightful discussions and knowledge exchange. Participants also had the opportunity to visit ICED's advanced laboratory facilities, including the 3D Physical Model Laboratory and other state-of-the-art research facilities, providing valuable exposure to ongoing research and innovative technologies in dam engineering.
