Today, the courtyards of Rajkot’s royal heritage came alive with the valiant neighs of Kathiawari horses.

In celebration of the birthday of Yuvrani Saheb Shivatmikadeviji, & observance of World Palace Day, the Heritage Ride brought together the riders of Halar Club, students, and their families for a memorable equestrian journey through the historic heart of Rajkot.

The ride began with the divine blessings of Maa Ashapura, continued through the majestic Ranjit Villas Palace to the heritage streets of Bedi Naka, and culminated at the upcoming Rajkot Darbargadh Museum.

Organised in collaboration with Halar Club and La Patisserie 20, the Heritage Ride was an invitation to experience Rajkot’s history, culture, and architectural heritage from a unique perspective.

આજે રાજકોટ સ્થાપના દિવસ નિમિત્તે આપણા શહેરના ગૌરવશાળી ઇતિહાસ, મૂલ્યો અને વારસાને વંદન છે.

7 જૂલાઈ 1612નાં રોજ, આજ થી 414 વર્ષ પહેલાં, ઠાકોર સાહેબ શ્રી વિભાજી અજોજીએ પોતાના સાહસ, દૂરંદેશી અને સુશાસનના સંકલ્પ સાથે રાજકોટ રાજ્યની સ્થાપના કરી. તેમના વિશ્વાસુ સહયોગી રાજુ સંધિ સાથે આજી નદીના કાંઠે વસાવેલા ગામને આજે સમગ્ર વિશ્વ રંગીલા રાજકોટ તરીકે ઓળખે છે.

ઠાકોર સાહેબ વિભાજી માત્ર રાજ્યના સ્થાપક જ નહોતા; તેમણે રાજધર્મના શાશ્વત મૂલ્યોને રાજ્યજીવનનો આધાર બનાવ્યો. તેમના દ્વારા રચાયેલ રાજચિહ્ન અને તેનું અવિનાશી સૂત્ર "રંજે ધર્મી, પ્રજા રાજા" આજે પણ રાજકોટ રાજપરિવાર માટે લોકકલ્યાણ, ન્યાય, કર્તવ્ય અને જવાબદારીનો જીવંત ધર્મ છે.

રાજકોટ દરબારગઢનો ઇતિહાસ પણ આ સ્થાપનાકાળથી જ શરૂ થાય છે. ઈ.સ. 1612 થી 1635 દરમિયાન રાણીવાસના પ્રારંભિક વિભાગોનું નિર્માણ થયું, જે રાજપરિવારની રાણીઓના નિવાસ માટે બનાવાયા હતા. આ જ વિભાગોમાં રાજ્યની પ્રથમ સુરક્ષા ચોકી સ્થાપવામાં આવી હતી, જે રાજ્યના પ્રારંભિક વહીવટ અને સુરક્ષા વ્યવસ્થાનું કેન્દ્ર હતું. ત્યારબાદ મહેરામણજી પ્રથમ અને સાહેબજીના સમયમાં રાણીવાસનો તબક્કાવાર વિસ્તાર થતો ગયો અને તે રાજપરિવારનું મુખ્ય નિવાસસ્થાન બન્યું.

અઢારમી સદીમાં ઠાકોર સાહેબ લાખાજી પ્રથમના શાસન દરમિયાન દરબારગઢમાં શીશ મહેલનું નિર્માણ થયું. અરીસાકામ, સુશોભિત કાષ્ઠકામ અને રાજપૂત સ્થાપત્યની કલાત્મક પરંપરાનું અનોખું પ્રતિબિંબ ધરાવતો શીશ મહેલ રાજવી સમારોહો અને વિશિષ્ટ પ્રસંગો માટે ઉપયોગમાં લેવાતો હતો. ત્યારબાદ વિવિધ રાજવીઓના શાસનકાળ દરમિયાન દરબારગઢનો તબક્કાવાર વિકાસ થતો ગયો.

ચાલો, આ દિવસે આપણે સૌ મળીને આપણા ઇતિહાસને જાણવાનો, વારસાનું સંરક્ષણ કરવાનો અને આવનારી પેઢીઓ સુધી તેને ગૌરવપૂર્વક પહોંચાડવાનો સંકલ્પ લઈએ.

On World Music Day, we celebrate not only melodies, but the traditions and communities that keep them alive.

For generations, the voices of Merani singers have been an integral part of the cultural life of the Rajkot royal family. Their songs have welcomed guests, blessed wedding processions, and marked important family and courtly occasions, carrying forward traditions that have been preserved through oral transmission for centuries.

This reel captures one such traditional wedding procession song—a living expression of Saurashtra’s rich folk heritage.

On this World Music Day, we honour these custodians of tradition whose songs continue to resonate across generations.

On the death anniversary of H.H. Thakore Saheb Shri Dharmendrasinhji Jadeja, the 14th Thakore Saheb of Rajkot, we pay tribute to a progressive ruler whose reign (1930–1940) left a lasting impact on the social, cultural, and civic development of Rajkot State.

His decade-long rule was marked by several important public works and reforms that reflected both vision and compassion. Among his notable contributions were the establishment of Dharmendrasinhji Arts College in 1937, providing higher education opportunities to generations of students, and the establishment of the Ashapura Mataji Temple, a lasting symbol of faith and community.

Thakore Saheb Dharmendrasinhji's commitment to public welfare extended beyond infrastructure and education. In 1932, under his reign, Rajkot State enacted a law prohibiting the use of young calves below a specified age for pulling loads in carts and vehicles. This legislation demonstrated a sensitivity towards animal welfare, recognizing the need to protect animals from exploitation. The law also established clear judicial procedures and penalties, reflecting his emphasis on justice and governance. (Ref Image 1)

A ruler with a modern and cosmopolitan outlook, Thakore Saheb Dharmendrasinhji guided Rajkot through a period of transition and progress. His administration encouraged educational advancement, civic improvement, and responsible governance while balancing tradition with modern values.

Today, his legacy endures not only through the institutions and public works established during his reign, but also through the progressive principles that shaped his governance.

Rajkot Darbargadh Museum was delighted to welcome the students of Rajkot with the Close2Kindness Club, Marwadi University for a meaningful heritage and learning experience within the 400-year-old Darbargadh Palace.

The visit brought together local children and international students, offering them an opportunity to explore the rich history, architecture, and legacy of Rajkot’s royal heritage. A special interaction with Her Highness Rani Sahab Kadambarideviji provided valuable insights into the cultural traditions and stories that continue to shape the region’s identity. Rani Sahab also encouraged the students to practice safeguarding and preserving one's own culture and traditions for the coming generations.

The experience extended beyond the museum galleries with a hands-on Tie-and-Dye workshop conducted in collaboration with the university’s Art Club, encouraging creativity, sustainable practices, and an appreciation for traditional crafts.

In this excerpt from his visit to Rajkot Darbargadh Museum, renowned art conservator-restorer Shri Anupam Sah, Founder, Anupam Heritage Lab and Himalayan Society for Heritage and Art Conservation , reflects on the possibilities held within historic spaces, materials, and collections.

Speaking about Rajkot Darbargadh, he describes it as a living classroom for conservation — a place with not only the physical space and intent for learning, but also a collection that itself becomes a laboratory for conservation practice and intervention.

One element that particularly drew his attention was the retained degraded mirrors within the Darbargadh galleries. For him, they are not flaws to erase, but stories to preserve — reminders of India’s long tradition of working with glass, capable of inspiring curiosity among both children and adults.

Looking ahead, he shares his hope that the Rajkot Darbargadh evolves beyond being only a museum, and becomes a centre for capacity building, learning, and dialogue around museums and heritage conservation.

He also extended his encouragement to the Rajkot Royal Family , appreciating their commitment, faith, and continued efforts towards restoration.
