Do you still keep the old card catalog in your library? While most libraries have transitioned to online catalogs with advanced search features, these card catalogs serve as a reminder how information searching was done before computers were widely used.

Usually organized by author, title, and subject, the small 3" x 5" cards show all the necessary information about a book or item such as title, author, publication details, copyright or publication dates, subjects, and the call number to locate it in the library.

When I was studying Cataloging in college, our teacher had us make these card catalogs as one of our first lessons. We found the standard punctuations of AACR quite challenging the first time. I was grateful for that since even if these were "manual" methods, its still the same principle.

There may be many technological changes in libraries, but even an 'old' tech like the card catalog is actually quite amazing when you think about it! Imagine, a tool like this can help you navigate shelves upon shelves of books. Librarians of the past really were so innovative to create these systems.
