The Public Distribution System (PDS) evolved as a system of management of scarcity and for distribution of food grains at affordable prices. Over the years, PDS has become an important part of Government’s policy for management of food economy in the country. It is an important constituent of the strategy for poverty eradication and is intended to serve as a safety net for the poor whose number is

more than 330 million and are nutritionally at risk. The “Online Public Distribution Monitoring System” proposed by IT India Consultancy Services and Astitvaa Adv. is an effort to help the government to distribute the food grains to its real beneficiaries. This online solution is a little step taken to strengthen the food security system in Bihar. We have tried to computerize the existing manual system to maintain the transparency which helps to check corruption by computerizing all operation involved in PDS and providing all information on web and some vital information through SMS. This system enables the consumers to receive the information by SMS on their mobiles on availability of food grains in their respective FPSs’ (Fair Price Shop). With this system in place, the consumer will not have to face the embracement of returning empty handed from FPS after pretended by FPS dealers about non-availability of food grains.
