Where a thousand earthen lamps illuminate the waters, devotion becomes a spectacle.
The Shivadham Durga Dham Ghat in Barnalikuchi at Patacharkuchi transformed into a mesmerising canvas of light as Maa Durga was bid farewell amidst thousands of glowing diyas. Diya-lit boats lined the immersion ghat, their shimmering reflections dancing upon the flowing waters in a spectacular celebration of faith and cultural splendour. The whole mesmerising procession was devoted to Ma in the truest sense adhering to Eco-friendly floating planks made of plantain to carry Maa and the diyas lit in her honour.

Adding to the festive fervour, Ravan Dahan was organised alongside the immersion celebrations, symbolising the eternal triumph of good over evil.
Bajali bid farewell to Maa Durga in a unique spectacle where tradition, devotion, and a thousand lights converged to create a truly unforgettable experience.

Exploring the Tourism Potential of Bajali, Assam

It was a pleasure meeting tourism professionals and engaging in meaningful discussions on the tourism potential of Bajali district, Assam. The interaction focused on identifying opportunities to showcase the region’s cultural and religious heritage, rural landscapes, local traditions, and community-based tourism experiences.

A key focus of the discussion was the strategic integration of Bajali into Assam’s broader tourism landscape. A circuit-based approach to destination development can encourage visitors to explore multiple destinations, experience the state’s cultural and geographical diversity. Tour operators explored potential tourism routes connecting Bajali with Guwahati, Manas National Park, and other destinations across Assam and the wider Northeast. Based on these proposed linkages, sample itineraries will be developed to position Bajali as an integral part of the region’s tourism circuits.

The discussions also emphasised the importance of community participation and local entrepreneurship in tourism development. Promoting homestays, showcasing traditional lifestyles, and introducing visitors to authentic local cuisine can create immersive travel experiences while generating livelihood opportunities for local communities. Such initiatives can help ensure that tourism growth contributes directly to the region’s socioeconomic development.

As part of the familiarisation visit, the tourism professionals explored Parihareswar Devalaya, the historic Shiva temple situated in Dubi village, and Jalikhata (Kalibari Than), along with the ancient Jalikhata Banyan Tree, estimated to be around 200 years old. These sites highlight Bajali’s potential to develop distinctive religious, heritage, and nature-based tourism experiences.

Taking these initiatives forward will require a collaborative approach involving government institutions, tourism stakeholders and local communities. Coordinated efforts in destination development, infrastructure improvement, capacity building, itinerary design, and strategic promotion will be essential to establish Bajali as a recognised tourism destination.

The interaction was a valuable step towards exploring the possibilities of positioning Bajali within Assam’s evolving tourism network. With appropriate destination mapping, collaborative planning, and community-led initiatives, Bajali can emerge as a meaningful addition to Assam’s tourism landscape—offering visitors authentic cultural encounters while fostering sustainable livelihoods and inclusive regional development.
