The Pradhan Mantri Gram Sadak Yojana (PMGSY), launched on 25th December 2000, is a flagship initiative of the Government of India aimed at providing all-weather road connectivity to unconnected rural habitations across the country.

In West Khasi Hills district of Meghalaya, PMGSY has played a transformative role in bridging the gap between remote villages and essential services. Given the district’s rugged terrain and scattered settlements, access to schools, healthcare, and markets was once a major challenge. Through this scheme, hundreds of kilometers of durable rural roads have been constructed, significantly improving connectivity across various blocks. Travel time has reduced, access to education and healthcare has improved, and local farmers can now transport their produce to larger markets more efficiently.

Despite these achievements, challenges remain due to the hilly geography and heavy rainfall, which often lead to landslides and road damage. Continuous maintenance is crucial to ensure the longevity of these roads. Even so, PMGSY has greatly strengthened connectivity, boosted economic activity, and supported social development, making it a cornerstone of rural progress in West Khasi Hills.
