Swachhata Hi Seva 2026 Campaign Commences in Nongstoin

Nongstoin, September 17, 2026: The Swachhata Hi Seva (SHS) 2026 campaign commenced today in Nongstoin under the theme “Swachhata Mein Sahbhag, Swachh Bharat, Viksit Bharat.”

The programme was organised by the Office of the Deputy Commissioner, West Khasi Hills District, in collaboration with Swachh Bharat Mission (U) 2.0 and PMAY-U, CLTC, Nongstoin Town.

As part of the programme, a Swachhata Pledge Reading Ceremony was held at the TRySEM Hall, Deputy Commissioner’s Office, Nongstoin, at 11:30 A.M. Officials and staff of the Deputy Commissioner’s Office participated in the pledge, reaffirming their commitment towards cleanliness and sanitation.

The ceremony was attended by Shri E. Lyngdoh, MCS, BDO; Shri Isack Momin, MCS, AC; and Smt. C.N.N. Sangma, MCS, AC, along with the staff of the Deputy Commissioner’s Office, Nongstoin.

LEGAL AWARENESS PROGRAMME FOR SCHOOL STUDENTS HELD AT NONGSTOIN

Nongstoin, September 11, 2026: A Legal Awareness Programme for school students was held today at the Conference Hall of the Office of the District and Sessions Court, Nongstoin, with the objective of creating awareness among students about their legal rights, child protection laws, access to free legal services and cyber safety.

The programme was chaired by Smti F.C. Rymbai, Chief Legal Aid Defense Counsel (CLADC), and began with a welcome address by Miss V. Kharhari, DCLADC.

The students were sensitised on Free Legal Services and the NALSA 15100 Helpline, along with the Right of Children to Free and Compulsory Education Act, 2009. The session helped the students understand the availability of legal assistance and the importance of their right to education and protection.

Smti E.G. Kharbani, DCLADC, spoke on the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act and the Juvenile Justice Act, highlighting the importance of protecting children from abuse, exploitation and other forms of harm.

A representative from the Police Department also interacted with the students. As part of the programme, IC DCRB conducted an informative session on Cyber Crimes and Cyber Safety, covering important do’s and don’ts to promote the safe and responsible use of digital platforms. The session sensitised the students about online risks, cybercrime prevention and the importance of staying safe in the digital world.

The programme also included an interactive session, during which the students had the opportunity to ask questions and clarify their understanding of various legal and safety-related matters.

Building Bridges Between Students & Police

As part of the Students Police Cadets Programme, students of Sib Singh Memorial Higher Secondary School, Nongstoin, visited Nongstoin Police Station and Women Police Station. The visit provided the students with an opportunity to interact with police officers and gain a better understanding of the functioning of police stations, policing duties and the role of the police in maintaining law and order.

The students were also introduced to the importance of community-oriented policing, encouraging mutual trust, awareness and cooperation between the police and the younger generation. Such interactions aim to familiarise students with policing as a service to the community and strengthen the bond between young people and the police.

Sibsingh Memorial Government Higher Secondary School Celebrates Golden Jubilee

Nongstoin, September 9, 2026: The Golden Jubilee Celebration of Sibsingh Memorial Government Higher Secondary School, Nongstoin, was held today at the school premises, marking fifty years of the institution’s contribution to education and the development of the region.

The programme commenced with the hoisting of the school flag, followed by a candle-lighting ceremony. Speeches were then delivered by the dignitaries, including the Chief Guest and Guest of Honour.

Shri Gabriel Wahlang, MLA Nongstoin Constituency, graced the occasion as the Chief Guest. The programme was also attended by the Deputy Commissioner of West Khasi Hills District, Smt. Hema Nayak, IAS, the Syiem of Nongstoin, Syiem Phylla Singh Syiem, Syiem Khynnah Kringwell Syiem, Principal of the school Dr. Y. Nongkynrih, teachers, retired teachers, former students and present students.

Addressing the gathering, Shri Gabriel Wahlang expressed his happiness at witnessing the school complete fifty years of service. He highlighted the history of the institution and acknowledged the contribution of the late Sibsingh Syiem and earlier generations towards the establishment and growth of the school. He said that the institution has played an important role in educating and shaping generations of students and urged the school community to continue working towards the progress of future generations.

Speaking on the occasion, Smt. Hema Nayak, IAS, expressed her happiness that the school, established in 1976, has completed fifty years of service to the people of West Khasi Hills. She noted that the Golden Jubilee of the school comes at a significant time, as West Khasi Hills District will also be commemorating its Golden Jubilee in the coming year.

The Deputy Commissioner called upon the school community and the people of the district to come together in preserving and celebrating the history and achievements of both the institution and the district. She also appreciated the dedication and contribution of teachers over the years and assured her support and cooperation towards the commemoration of the Golden Jubilee.

The programme concluded with cultural performances and other presentations by the students and members of the school community.

West Khasi Hills Youth Urged to Participate in Viksit Bharat Young Leaders Dialogue 2027

Nongstoin, September 9, 2026: The Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports, Government of India, has launched the Viksit Bharat Young Leaders Dialogue (VBYLD) 2027, a major national youth engagement initiative aimed at providing young Indians with a platform to participate in nation-building and contribute their ideas towards the vision of Viksit Bharat @2047.

The initiative is being implemented through Mera Yuva Bharat (MY Bharat) and the National Service Scheme (NSS), with the Viksit Bharat Quiz serving as the first stage of the flagship Viksit Bharat Challenge track.

The Viksit Bharat Quiz will be conducted online through the MY Bharat portal. Young people who qualify through the Quiz will proceed to the Essay Round, followed by the District Championship, State VBYLD and National Round. The winner emerging from the District Championship will get an opportunity to compete at the State Level, with successful participants progressing further towards the National Level.

Youth in the age group of 15–29 years are eligible to participate in VBYLD 2027. The Viksit Bharat Quiz will remain open until September 30, 2026.

The initiative will culminate in the National Dialogue in New Delhi from January 10–12, 2027, providing selected young leaders an opportunity to present their ideas and perspectives on the national stage.

The Deputy Director, My Bharat Kendra, Nongstoin, Shri K. Jethwani, has made a special appeal to the youth of West Khasi Hills to actively participate in the online competition.

How to Participate

To participate, eligible youth are required to register on the MY Bharat portal, provide their mobile number, email ID and basic details, and complete their profile. After registration, participants can log in and navigate to the VBYLD 2027 Quiz, click on “Start Quiz”, answer all 20 questions within 10 minutes, and submit the Quiz.

Youth across West Khasi Hills are encouraged to participate in large numbers and make their ideas and voices heard in this national youth engagement initiative.

CMYEP 2026 Opens in West Khasi Hills to Empower Young Talent

Nongstoin, September 8, 2026: The Chief Minister’s Block Level Youth Engagement Programme (CMYEP) 2026, under the theme “Young Meghalaya Shaping Tomorrow,” was inaugurated today at the Market Complex Hall, New Nongstoin, West Khasi Hills District.

The programme aims to provide young people with opportunities to participate, learn and grow, while encouraging their talents, creativity, skills and leadership.

The programme was graced by Smt. Gracefulness Sten, Principal, DIET Nongstoin, as the Chief Guest. In her address, she highlighted that youth is a brief but important stage of life, marked by energy, creativity, ambition and the courage to explore new opportunities. She encouraged young people to make the most of this period by developing their skills, setting clear goals and remaining resilient in the face of setbacks.

Speaking on the theme “Young Meghalaya Shaping Tomorrow,” she reflected on when, why and what the youth should shape. She emphasised that the time to shape the future is today, as tomorrow is the result of the choices and actions taken in the present. She urged the youth not to wait for the future to arrive, but to begin preparing themselves and taking meaningful steps today.

She further explained that the future must be shaped because the youth are not merely beneficiaries of tomorrow’s Meghalaya but will be its leaders, professionals, entrepreneurs, innovators and responsible citizens. Their choices, values, skills and actions will have a direct bearing on the progress of the State.

On what to shape, she encouraged the youth to shape not only their careers and ambitions but also their character, knowledge, skills, mindset and communities. She urged them to make wise choices, nurture their mental, physical and emotional well-being, and use their talents positively for the benefit of society. She reminded them that true progress comes when personal growth is combined with a commitment to building a better Meghalaya.

The District Sports Officer (DSO), West Khasi Hills, Smt B. Syiem in her welcome address, highlighted the importance of providing platforms for young people to discover and develop their talents.

The programme also featured Dr. Maxwell Lyngdoh, Counsellor and Career Expert, Shillong, who shared guidance with the youth on career development and opportunities.

Various competitions and activities were organised, including guitar and flute competitions, dance, folk song and other cultural and creative performances, providing young participants with an opportunity to showcase their talents.

The programme seeks to encourage greater youth participation and inspire young people to take an active role in shaping their own future and contributing towards a stronger, more progressive and prosperous Meghalaya.

PIB Organises ‘Varta’ Media Sensitisation Workshop on Centrally Sponsored Schemes in Nongstoin

Nongstoin, August 31, 2026: The Press Information Bureau (PIB), Government of India, Shillong, in association with the District Administration, West Khasi Hills District, today organised a district-level ‘Varta’ Media Sensitisation Workshop on Centrally Sponsored Schemes at the DC Conference Hall, Nongstoin.

The workshop aimed to sensitise media professionals on various Centrally Sponsored Schemes and strengthen communication on government programmes and development initiatives, particularly at the grassroots and last-mile level.

The programme commenced with the presentation of the purpose of the workshop by Shri Gopajit Das, IIS, Assistant Director, PIB Shillong.

In her welcome address, Smt. Hema Nayak, IAS, Deputy Commissioner, West Khasi Hills District, highlighted the importance of effective communication and the role of the media in creating awareness about government schemes and ensuring that information reaches the intended beneficiaries.

A special talk on “Regional Journalism and the Last Mile: Taking Development Stories from the Ground to the People” was delivered by Ms. Princess Giri Rashir of EastMojo, recipient of the Ramnath Goenka Excellence in Journalism Award. She emphasised the importance of responsible and unbiased journalism, urging media professionals to ensure that news reports are balanced, factual and not one-sided. She stressed the need to present different perspectives while reporting on issues, particularly those concerning development and communities at the grassroots level.

Ms. Rashir also highlighted the important role of regional media in bringing development stories from the ground to the people and strengthening public awareness through accurate, responsible and credible reporting.

Officials from various departments subsequently shared inputs on government programmes and schemes relating to Agriculture, Horticulture, PWD (Roads), Public Health Engineering, Soil and Water Conservation, Tourism, Fisheries and DRDA. The sessions provided participating media representatives with information on key initiatives and highlighted the importance of effective dissemination of government programmes to the public.

Addressing the workshop, Shri Methodius Dkhar, Hon’ble Minister for Cooperation, Labour, Employment & Skill Development, and Food, Civil Supplies & Consumer Affairs, Government of Meghalaya, highlighted the vast potential of West Khasi Hills in sectors such as tourism, agriculture and natural resources. He noted that the district possesses a combination of resources and opportunities that can contribute significantly to its overall development.

The Minister observed that, despite the availability of various Central and State Government schemes, challenges remain in ensuring that information and benefits reach the intended beneficiaries, particularly in remote and weaker areas of the district. He said that the issue should not simply be attributed to resistance from local communities, as lack of adequate information and limited media coverage can also contribute to gaps in awareness and dissemination of government schemes.

He stressed the need for a collaborative approach involving the government, media and local communities to bridge these gaps and ensure that the benefits of development programmes reach the real and intended beneficiaries. He further emphasised the need for greater openness, stronger cooperation and transparency among all stakeholders for effective implementation of government schemes.

The workshop concluded with an interactive session and open discussion, providing media representatives an opportunity to seek clarifications, share views and interact with officials on various government initiatives.

National Sports Day 2026 Celebrated in West Khasi Hills

Nongstoin, August 28, 2026: The National Sports Day 2026 was observed in West Khasi Hills District with a 5 km “Run for Fun”, bringing together more than 400 enthusiastic participants from different age groups under the theme “Khelega Bharat, Jeetega Bharat.” The celebration was organised to mark the birth anniversary of Major Dhyan Chand, one of India’s greatest hockey players, whose remarkable contribution to Indian hockey and dedication to sports continue to inspire generations of sportspersons across the country.

The programme was organised by the District Sports Officer, Nongstoin, in collaboration with the District Administration, West Khasi Hills, District Social Welfare Officer and District Sports Promotion Society.

Smt. Hema Nayak, IAS, Deputy Commissioner, West Khasi Hills, graced the occasion as the Chief Guest and flagged off the 5 km “Run for Fun” from the Indoor Stadium, Ladweitang, Nongstoin. Addressing the participants, she encouraged people, particularly the youth, to take an active interest in sports and physical activities as part of a healthy lifestyle. She also highlighted the opportunities available in the sporting field and encouraged young people to consider sports as a potential career option, while pursuing their talents with dedication and discipline.

Speaking on the occasion, Smt. D. Pakyntein, District Social Welfare Officer, highlighted the importance of the Nasha Mukt Bharat Abhiyan and urged the participating youth to stay away from drugs and make healthy and responsible choices in life. She encouraged the youth to contribute towards creating a society free from substance abuse.

She also emphasised the importance of gender equality and non-discrimination against girls, in line with the objectives of Beti Bachao, Beti Padhao, and encouraged everyone to ensure that girls receive equal opportunities in education, sports and other areas of life.

The 5 km “Run for Fun” brought together participants from different age groups and created an atmosphere of enthusiasm and community participation. The celebration highlighted the importance of sports and physical activity in maintaining a healthy lifestyle, while also encouraging young people to stay away from drugs, pursue their sporting interests and make the most of the opportunities available to them.

41st Meghalaya State Badminton Championship 2026 Inaugurated at Nongstoin

Nongstoin, August 26, 2026: The 41st Meghalaya State Badminton Championship 2026 was inaugurated today at the Indoor Stadium, Nongstoin, marking the beginning of the four-day State-level championship being held from August 26 to 29, 2026.

The championship is organised by the West Khasi Hills District Badminton Association, in collaboration with the Directorate of Sports and Youth Affairs, Government of Meghalaya, and the Meghalaya State Badminton Association.

The championship has witnessed the participation of 245 players, comprising 182 male and 63 female participants, with 396 entries registered across 22 events. A total of 363 matches are scheduled to be played across three courts during the championship.

Participants from various districts and badminton associations have taken part in the championship, including East Garo Hills (12), East Khasi Hills (46), Eastern West Khasi Hills (16), North Garo Hills (11), RBBA (19), South West Garo Hills (5), South West Khasi Hills (35), West Garo Hills (21), West Jaintia Hills (31), West Khasi Hills (36), and YTBC (13).

The inaugural programme was graced by Smt. Hema Nayak, IAS, Deputy Commissioner, West Khasi Hills, as the Chief Guest, in the presence of Smt. B. Syiem, District Sports Officer; Shri T. Diengngan, President, West Khasi District Badminton Association; Dr. Lumbor Mawsor, Senior Vice President; Shri S. Masar, Vice President; Shri B. Marwein, General Secretary, and other dignitaries, officials and members of the badminton fraternity.

Addressing the gathering, the dignitaries highlighted the importance of promoting sports and providing young athletes with opportunities to compete at the State level. The championship provides a valuable platform for players from across Meghalaya to showcase their talent, gain competitive experience and pursue excellence in badminton.

With 22 events being contested over the four-day championship, badminton enthusiasts can look forward to a series of competitive and exciting matches at the Indoor Stadium, Nongstoin.

The championship will conclude on August 29, 2026, following the completion of all scheduled events and matches.
